HERBERG PROJECT
Robertson

I
N 1918 in the wake of the great flu epidemic, an orphanage,
Die Herberg, was built by the Robertson community for
children left orphaned and destitute.

In 2003 vines were planted on the orphanage grounds by the

same community. All planting material, soil preparation and
irrigation were donated.

This blend is made for free by sympathetic cellars and sold in

aid of the children, who are today no longer all orphans but
mainly from broken homes.

One hundred percent of the profit is donated to the children.

Only true audited costs are remunerated.

Time and effort cannot be recompensed. The government

subsidises more or less 48% of the monthly expenses of every
child in the home.

The rest of the expenses must be fund raised by the home on

a monthly basis. The profit of the wine sales will benefit the
income of the home to make it possible to cater for the care
needs of each child.

The home houses approximately 122 children in need. The

children range from babies to eighteen years old. The sale of
Thunderchild wines (see Lot 51 in this catalogue) raises 10% of
the funding which must be provided by the home.

Rotary Club
of Gately
supplies bus to “HUMANITY IN MOTION.”

E
AST LONDON’S Rotary Club of Gately has

Pebbles Project donated a 16-seater bus to the Western Cape-

based Pebbles Project. Over the last 25 years, the
wine industry has given Gately thousands of cases of
wine for its annual wine auction, enabling Gately to
raise over R2 million for local charitable causes.

This year there was an opportunity to give something

back.
“Gately has for many years focussed on supporting East
London charities caring for children. Pebbles is a really
worthwhile project, and will help Pebbles to improve
their level of care for the children in the programme”,
8

says Gately Rotary Trust chairman, Jonathan Schewitz.

Gately will hold its 25th consecutive auction in May, and

the target is to break last year’s record of R360, 000
for charity.
“Setting up an auction is hard work, and dedicated
Rotarians put in long hours travelling to the wine areas
to collect the wine, sorting it, and then cajoling bidders
to attend the auction,” says past Club President Colin
Davies.

Due to the generosity of the wine estates, Gately

decided to include wineland charities in its donations.
In 2011, it donated to the Thunderchild project, a
childcare centre in Robertson, Western Cape, a town
that provides much of the auction wine.
“This year it is the turn of the Pebbles Project, another
care initiative that assists young children in coping with
various handicaps,” explains Davies. “Pebbles need
was transporting the youngsters. We assisted them
by donating a 16-seater. It was the least we could do
considering the generosity of the wine industry.”

Press Release
Buffalo City Early Childhood
Development Project Phase 2
I
T is common cause that first 1000 days of a baby’s existence, will determine their physical,
cognitive and emotional health for the rest of their life. This first two year period of a child’s
life, can define everything from their chances of developing certain diseases, to their academic
success.

lt is in line with this given fact, that the Gately Rotary Club, in association with East London,
Bonza Bay and Arcadia Rotary Clubs, decided to embark on an intensive training programme,
whereby a further 25 aspiring Early Chilhood Practitioners, are receiving training up to NQF Level
4, facilitated by the lnstitute of Training and Education for Capacity Building. (ITEC) Graduation is
due by middle 2017.

This follows from a successful implementation of Phases 1 & 2 over 18 months that commenced
in March 2015, whereby the initial number of 25 students are being trained and will graduate with
an NQF Level 4 qualification in Early Childhood Development in August 2016. All phases were
made possible with the financial participation of Rotary Clubs in America namely, Libertyville
Sunrise, Northbrook and Huntley, as well as very generous cash contributions from The Rotary
Foundation in the USA as well as Rotary Districts in RSA and the USA. The total cost of phases 1
to 3 constitute R3 million donated by the Rotary family, with a Motto of SERVICE ABOVE SELF!

Funds will be allocated to Tuition, Furniture and Equipment, Monitoring, Educational Toys, Basic Food
and Travel Allowance for students and finally Positive Parenting, forming an essential component
of the curriculum.

Joint Aid Management (JAM) is a project sponsored by KFC and provides a free nutritious meal to
all 3000 and more pupils, at the start of every day, at the ECD Centres and ensures that all children
are adequately fed before the start of the daily activities.

All 50 students in total will be deployed to 50 Créches under the guidance of Buffalo City Child
Care Development Association together with The Loaves and Fishes Network. A total number of
3000 children will be directly affected by this positive intervention with a further 1000 entering
the ECD Programme every year.

The Government has also emphasized the importance of ECD training by allocating a sum of R813
million in the 2016 year to the National Dept. of Basic Education that will benefit an additional
104,000 children in ECD Centres across the country.

Rotary views its involvement in this particular sector as a Game Changer and has identified its
commitment to giving the children of today an opportunity in the future, as a Quantum Leap 15
Project, that will make an impact in the communities it serves.

O LIVEWOO D
WELCOME to the exclusive Olivewood Golf Estate – East London’s best kept secret …..
Olivewoods “designed by nature” 18-hole golf course is unlike any other in South Africa, in that it has been
inspired by our natural landscape. The course has been created with respect for the environment and our
indigenous fauna and flora. Each hole is laid out in such a way that the existing ridges and valleys / natural
contours are enhanced.

Unique features such as a lake area, unconventional green designs and water features on fifteen of the holes
all go a long way towards establishing this course as a challenging one to be enjoyed by golfers of all levels.
Numerous tee placements will also allow Olivewood to be played from Championship to Senior level.

With this exciting course comes the Club House built in line with the colonial style depicted in the original
farmhouse, renamed “Governors House” which is adjoining. Here members will enjoy classic olde-worlde
hospitality and views of beautiful fairways and greens from the wide, comfortable verandahs.

We are in the infancy stages of marketing our residential node of the estate. House designs can be chosen
from the four beautifully designed concepts approved by the developers. Allowance has also been made for
individually designed homes and smaller townhouse units which will cater for young families and retirees
alike. The construction of the homes will take place in phases and interest has already far surpassed our ex-
pectations.
