Mole Concept
ACTIVITY 1
Copper has two stable isotopes with the following masses and % abundances: Cu-63 (62.93
amu, 69.09% abundance) and Cu-65 (64.9278 amu, 30.91% abundance). Calculate the average
atomic mass of copper.
ACTIVITY 2
1. C3H5N3O9
= 3C + 5H + 3N + 9(O)
= 3 (12) + 5 (1) + 3 (14) + 9 (16)
= 227 g/mol
2. (NH2)2 CO
= 2N + 4H + C + O
= 2 (14) + 4 (1) + 12 + 16
= 60 g/mol
3. Hg(OCN)2
= Hg + 2 (O) + 2C + 2N
= 201 + 2(16) + 2 (12) + 2 (14)
= 285 g/mol
ACTIVITY 3
1. Ammonia (NH3) is used for fertilizers and many other things. How many molecules of
ammonia are present in 0.334 g of ammonia?
Molar mass = N H 3 = 14 + 1(3) = 14 + 3 = 17 u
1 mole = 17 g
No. of moles in 0.334 g,
given mass
=
molar mass
0.334
=
17
= 0.09 mol
1 mole = 6.23 x 1023
0.09 moles = 6.23 x 1023 (0.09) = 0.57 x 1023
Therefore, 0.334 g of N H 3 contains 0.57 x 1023 molecules
ACTIVITY 4
Conversion between mass and moles
1 mole = 80 g
No. of moles in 345.0 g
345.0
=
80
= 4.31 mol
2. Copper is used for the absorption and used of iron in the formation of haemoglobin. How
many grams of Cu are present in 3.87 mol copper?
1 mole = 63.546 g
= (3.87 mol) (63.546 g)
= 245.92 g
