Stage 1: Desired Results

2-1: investigate, with guidance, the nature of things, demonstrating an understanding of the procedures
General followed
Learning 2-4: demonstrate positive attitudes for the study of science and for the application of science in
Outcome(s) responsible ways
2-9: recognize the effects of heating and cooling, and identify methods for heating and cooling
Specific
2-9.1: describe temperature in relative terms, using expressions, such as hotter than, colder than
Learning 2.9.2: measure temperature in degrees Celsius (oC)
Outcome(s)
Learning 1. Students will compare the temperatures of different places
Objective(s) 2. Students will measure and record temperatures in degrees Celsius

Stage 2: Assessment Evidence

 discussion/questions
Summative Formative
  cooperation
Assessment Assessment  observation

Stage 3: Learning Experience

 Temperature around the school
Tech Resources worksheets *
 N/A
to Do to Bring  Thermometers (6)
 Tape
Time Content/Description Notes
3:10 pm Measuring Temperature
15 minutes  Have students gather at the front of the room near the
calendar *Emphasize that temperatures
 Ask students ‘Now that we put the thermometers around MUST have a oC after them, and
the school and they’ve had time to feel the temperature, that we can’t just write the
what do you think the next step could be?’ number
 Have them discuss the idea with their neighbour, then ask
for answers. While they are discussing, draw a
thermometer on the board
 The answer is  we need to read the thermometers and
find out what the temperature is!
 Ask students for a fist of 5 how well they think they know
how to read thermometers (1 means not at all, 5 means no
problem)
 After students have given their answers, fill in the
thermometer on the board to a certain temperature (+10).
Have them write what temperature the thermometer is
reading on the floor with their elbows (OBSERVE)
 Use name bucket to draw names of four students who will
come and write their answers on the board.
 Review answers, placing them on the thermometer and
checking understanding as we go
 Erase the line filled in on the thermometer, and draw a
new one (+14). Have students write what they think the
thermometer is reading on the bottom of their shoe. Pull

four new names and repeat the process.

 Repeat for one temperature in the negatives (-8)

Temperature Worksheets
 If students need no further explanation on how to read the
thermometers, show them the thermometer pages from **Before students begin getting
3:25 pm their science booklets. They will need to read the ready for the end of the day, ask
5-10 minutes thermometer, and fill in the temperature at the bottom. them which place in the school
 Once students understand what they must do, release they think would be the coldest
them to their desks to fill out the worksheets, circulating (doesn’t have to be somewhere
and helping as needed. we put a thermometer), and
have them tell me on the way
out the door (exit-style question)
Clean Up and Get Ready for End of Day
 Have students replace their science folders into their boxes
on the side and get ready for the end of the day
3:35 pm
 Chairs put away, backpacks packed, jobs done,
5 minutes
whiteboards cleaned, floors cleaned, etc.
 Reassure students that tomorrow in science we will be
finding out what the temperatures around the school are!
