1) Rotation
2) Revolution
Rotation of earth
Rotation of earth is the movement of earth around its own axis. Earth spins around its axis, just as a
top spins around its spindle. It completes one rotation around its axis in 24 hours.
Revolution of earth:
The movement of earth around the sun in a fixed path or orbit is called revolution of earth. Earth
completes its one round around the sun in 365 days or 1 year.
Effects of Earth Movements:
Combined, the revolution and the rotation of the earth cause change in our daily weather, global
climate by affecting wind direction, temperature, ocean currents, and precipitation, and change day to
night and night to day respectively.
Change in seasons, spring, fall, summer, and winter, on earth is caused by the movement of the Earth
around the sun, the tilt of earth, and how high the sun will get in the sky.
As the Earth revolves around the sun, its axis is tilted from perpendicular to the plane of the elliptic by
23.45 degrees. It is on this axis that the earth rotates every 24 hours. Since the axis is tilted the effects of
revolution of the earth is different for different parts of the globe. Certain areas are tipped forward, or
away from the sun at different times of the year. This tilting causes the four seasons of the year.
Moreover, the tilting also creates opposite seasons in the Northern an Southern hemispheres.
However, the spinning or rotation of earth around its own axis causes day to turn night and night to day.
