Topic Identifying pre-conceived notions and exposing students to the ideas of equity

and equality.

Objective Students will be familiar with various readings that will challenge their thoughts
about racism and expose them to authors/books they previously may not have
known of to disrupt their previous way of thinking.

Lesson Students enter the classroom, are greeted. Class Welcome slide states that
Intro (5-15 students must open Disrupting your Texts reading and comb through it. Students
mins) should pick out at least 2 statements they agree with, want to know more
about, or want to challenge.

Lesson Teacher asks students questions to get them thinking about the text:
(15-35 ● What are the most common sources of hate and bias according to the
mins) article? State you evidence from the reading
● Why might minorities experience more microaggressions than other
groups? State you evidence from the reading
● Why do some students receive less/different education than others?
State you evidence from the reading

Engage the class in a discussion about these topics, and encourage students to
share their experience. Highlight instances where simply stating that a group
needs more representation isn’t good enough. Emphasize that to change
unhealthy and racist mindsets, we must be present and active in our actions.

Watch the Antiracist Baby video. After, challenge students mindsets: Are there
any ways in which you or a friend/family member may have been raised to have
racist mindsets? To have open mindsets? Watch the video again after.

Ask students to share their thoughts in groups or as a class (whatever makes

students more comfortable). Have students write about one experience that they
had growing up that either led to an open mindset or a racist one (and if so, how
do you challenge that mindset?).

Expose students to Diversify and Disrupt Read Aloud Library and give each table
group a choice of reading. Give students plenty of time to read their selection.

End of Have students pick an idea or quote from their group's reading and write about
Lesson how it opened their mind to a new idea or how it challenged a preconceived
(5-15 notion and changed their way of thinking. Have one last discussion about
mins) accessing text, and have students turn in their thoughts as an exit ticket.

Accomod Students who have trouble reading can either use Audio listening instead of
ations reading or read in the appropriate setting as dictated by IEP. Books are
