Abstract

The aim of this project paper is to know the present English language teaching method in Bangladesh.

The study serves two main purposes: first, it investigates how English teachers identify and implement

motivational teaching strategies in their classrooms and second, how their students perceive and observe

specific teaching strategies. These are the basic questions, which will be discussed in the paper. This

paper will answer all these questions using some methods as well.

This paper is written in order to point out all the weaknesses of English language learning strategies so

we can reorder them further with all the strengths and possible techniques. Also, some recommenda-

tions are given into the section of “overall findings” according to the two observations and from the

class conducts experience.

Introduction

The educated or even fairly educated people had to use English for official, professional, educational

and other purposes. Grammar Translation Method the learning occurs through memorization and drill-

ing exercises. ESL has become produced a method with an emergence called Audio lingual. This meth-

od is mainly focusing on oral skill. After that another method named Total Physical Response (TPR)

which attempts to teach language through physical (motor) activity. Another method- The Silent Way. It

is based on the premise that the Teacher should be silent as much as possible in class. Certainly, to at-

tain success in the overall Process of English teaching and learning, the importance of communicative

and creative Activities to operate grammar effectively in the real world is essential for learning gram-

mar.

As a part of graduation, my Internship report named “ Class Observation and Conduction in English” ;

depends on my perception of two classes of Basic Grammar & Writing and of my experience of show-

ing one classes of Writing & Comprehension. During class perception, a checklist provided by the su-

pervisor is used to present instructors presentation and instruction methods and to evaluate student’s re-

sults. In terms of noticing classes, a few problems have been found. To overcome these problems, a few

suggestions have been made that can help make English writing instruction mandatory.

Objectives of the Internship:

The primary objective of teaching practicum is to identify whether the teaching resources and the pre-

sent scenario of language teaching in Bangladeshi schools succeed on developing English language.

Other objectives are:

i) To know about the present scenario of language teaching in Bangladeshi Schools.

ii) To learn to apply language teaching techniques at real classrooms situations

iii) To find out impacts of technical applications upon the learners

In order to achieve the objectives, the intern has:

i) To work with cooperation of a facilitator i.e. a teacher of the particular institution besides

his/her supervisor at DIU and gather information about the institution

ii) To observe classes and see the ways teachers apply methods and techniques

iii) To take 2-3 classes/demo classes and apply methods and techniques

Methodology

3.1 Selecting an Institution:

By the consultation with the supervisor, a school was selected for the internship. The name of the school

was Marin School and the intern talked with the principle. A recommendation letter was submitted to

the principle took an interview and permitted to conduct the internship there.

3.2 Selecting a Facilitator:

The principle was selected voluntarily for the project because of his knowledge and bonding with the

students. He also helped the intern a lot to finish his internship perfectly. He introduced the intern with

his teachers and students to become accustomed with them for finishing the project easily.

3.3 Selecting Classes:

A class teacher was selected. The teacher asked which class the author wanted to observe. The author

selected two English Language classes and one ICT class in class nine (9). It was quite uncomfortable to

seat in a fully new class and take class having no experience.

Shovo 4

3.4 Classroom Observation:

Two English class was observed and one ICT class nine (9) students of Marin School By the help of the

coordinator author was told to come to the school at 9 A.M on 22 November, 2021.The room number if

those classes was 501,602,203. A checklist was used for the class observation. First they started the

class with the repetition of their previous class lesson. Then they started their new lesson. The teachers

used many examples regarding the lesson. Usually they use the text book to teach the lesson. After fin-

ishing the lesson the teachers questioned the students and students answered to the questions. At the end

of the class the teacher gave them homework. The teacher was very much friendly with his students.

Checklist:

A checklist was used to observe classes and to collect overall information about the class and the check-

list is attached as appendix at the end of the paper.

Conducting classes:

I took a class on Writing & Comprehension. I got 30 minutes to conduct a class. I have tried to come up

with the traditional thematic way of writing English so that students feel interested to do classes. I start-

ed my class with greetings. Then I moved on to my main topic. For this part, I took different essay writ-

ing. Students became very much interested to write. I used the communicative Teaching Method in my

classes. It is a method where both students and teachers interact with each other. It is like a student cen-

tered classroom. They can share all their opinions with teachers .

Shovo 5

3.5 Interviewing the particular Course Teacher:

There are 25 teachers in the. Mohammad Kawsar Kayes was interviewed after the class. He has been

teaching for 10 years in this institution. He was asked politely how he manages the students, how he di-

vides the class time, how he makes lesson plan before the class and how he deals with intelligent stu-

dents and weak students. Because in a class each and every student does not have the same quality. He

gave the answer clearly. His class was observed and found that he is very practical and completed his

entire task very easily because of his experience.

Shovo 6

3.6 Testing Students & Self-Assessment with help of the Facilitator:

The author wanted to see how much the students understood the topic or lesson by asking them ques-

tions. Most of the students understood the appropriate topic and lesson. Based on their understanding

most of them understood the class. It was quite difficult to get long term feedback from students as an

intern teacher. Some questions were asked randomly and they answered normally. Some of them could

not give the right answer. So, it was assumed that there was some lacking in his teaching. He also gave

them group work to get instant feedback and some of them were able to answer question, but a few stu-

dents could not answer. Class observer said that pronunciation of the author was good, but suggested

that the author should be clam while teaching. It was told that the author was quite nervous as had no

experience to deal that amount of students. But he told that the author’s communication skill was good

enough. The author to improve his class and lesson management. The author also have to improve his

class observation skill.

There is a certain limitation to this study. The intern did not get much time to observe more specifically

and the report is written within a short time. Another thing is that the paper has been completed only

based on three classes of observation. It could possible to miss particular thing which is not mentioned

in this paper.

Moreover, this paper shows only the report of one particular school. Other school’s English Language

Teaching process could be different.

Name of Institution: Marine School

Level of the Students: Class -9

Number of Students: 20

Duration: 45 Minutes.

Teaching Experience:

28 November, the author taught class 9 students at Marin School. He started the class at 9 am and fin-

ished at 9:45 am. The duration of the class was 45 minutes. There were 20 students in the classroom.

Materials used in the class were marker, white-board and worksheet. The objective of the class was to

teach students about right form of verb. At the beginning of the class, the author greeted the students,

introduced himself and asked their names. The author asked the students before explaining the topic,

what is right form of verb? And where can we use right form of verb in a sentence? After that, He ex-

plained the topic to the students. He presented examples of right form of verb which makes them clear

about the topic. The students were able to follow him and do the task without hesitation. In addition, the

environment of the class was learning-friendly.

Shovo 20

Teaching Experience Findings:

7.1 Lesson Preparation:

The author was well-prepared for the class along with the lesson plan. He took the class as he planned

with the proper lesson plan. The students spoke in English with their classmates. He tried to do some

group activities with the students and tried to teach them by having fun with them.

7.2 Lesson Delivery:

The author gave clear instructions and explanations for the activities. Before teaching the class he made

himself prepared with some worksheets/exercises for every class. However, being an inexperience in-

structor the author could not teach the class according to his plan.

7.3 Use of Language:

The intern believed that he was good enough to handle the class though faced some problems. He used

English language effectively for instructing the students, and the students did not have any difficulty to

understand the intern during the class. But he was not fluent as a teacher during his class. He was not

experienced. That’s why he faced some problems while teaching. When the students asked any ques-

tions, the intern took time to answer, because, the intern was not habituated with this situation.

©Daffodil International University

Shovo 21

Overall Findings:

The author observed three classes at Marin School. Two of the classes were on English language and

another one is on ICT. The concerned teachers provided me with lesson plan for the classes. There are

several findings the author want to mention which he found from his observation. The author found that

all the students and the teachers are interactive with each other. All the teachers are experienced to teach

their students. They know very well how to teach which student in what manner. The teachers were

well-prepared for the classes. They always had their materials with them. The teacher showed adequate

subject knowledge about the classes. They managed to finish their classes on time.

The teachers gave appropriate lesson introduction and introduced the topic of the day properly during

the classes. They gave clear instructions and explanations to the students during the classes such as re-

peating what they said about the topic and explaining what they said. The environment of the class-

rooms was good enough to move and room around comfortably. There were posters and other things in

the classrooms. However, there were no supportive elements relevant to the topics of the class. The

teachers were well-behaved and they treated the students in a friendly manner. No disruption was

caused during the classes. Technology was used during the classes and there was no multimedia projec-

tor and sound system in the class.

©Daffodil International University

Shovo 22

List of Overall findings:

i) Have proper lesson instructions.

ii) The teachers were well mannered with the students.

iii) Have the proper balance of bookish and non-bookish education.

iv) Use of multimedia in the class.

v) Less uses of real life examples.

vi) Sound system used in the class.

vii) Visual projections were used in the class.

viii) Enough break in between the classes.

©Daffodil International University

Shovo 23

Recommendations:

After observing the teachers classes the author found several areas where they can improve. There was

no group studying in the classrooms.

As an observer the author found that the teachers were able to establish their subject matter well. After

observing the teachers classes, he found several areas where they can improve. The teachers could do

group works with the students. A student can learn how to get help from another person and how he can

help others by doing group work. They should take more care of the weaker students. If they do not care

about the weaker students, they will fall behind. The teachers used pictures or interesting video to make

them understand more clearly. Some students are visual learners. If the teacher provided any picture or

video, they could learn the lesson easily and it would be a more enjoyable class for the students. As an

intern the author thought he did well during his classes. But he does not have that much sufficient

knowledge to teach a class. He was so nervous that he made some mistakes during his class. The author

have to overcome nervousness. He need to improve in every possible step. He could not manage the

students properly. He just tried to copy the teaching style of the class teacher. He could try another

teaching style. He could focus on his lacing and try to improve for his future career.

©Daffodil International University

Shovo 24

Lists of recommendations:

i) Improve of using Multimedia in the class room.

ii) Improve of using visual and sound system in the class to relevant topic.

iii) More use of real life example in the class.

iv) Weaker students should be given more priority.

v) Group based study should be increased.

©Daffodil International University

Shovo 25

Conclusion:

In conclusion, the necessity of English language learning and teaching has been considered for several

reason and given top most priority to this area. Second language acquisition is always been a tuff thing

to accomplished. Although people are trying their best to cope up with the situation having several

problems to acquire the English as the second language as it very difficult. In such situation, for learn-

ing a second language the methodology, the Martials are playing a vital role.

A country like Bangladesh having lots of difficulties in learning English language at the Secondary

School Level. To sustain those difficulties the educational ministry and other educational organizations

are planning and working on these issues.

At the end, it could say that Marine School is going well but they have to improve their facilities more,

especially modern technology.
