Exceptional care must be taken when towing to avoid accidents resulting in personal injury or, in worst cases, fatality. Recovering = Use a towbar connected to the front or rear eyes on the machine when towing to a suitable location or passable road. Filling compressed air system Compressed air can be filled when necessary through a filer valve on the front part of the load unit frame, by using air from another machine. The valve is used to release the parking brake when the compressed air system is empty and the compressor is non-operational. Figure 1 1 Filler valve Releasing the parking brake Only the parking brake is released when filing compressed air through the right valve, see fig. Required minimum pressure approx 400kPa (4 bar) (58 psi). No pressure reaches the service brakes. Releasing the parking brake and pressurizing the service brakes Filling can also be done through the left valve but requires @ minimum pressure of 650 kPa (6.5 ba) (94.25 psi). The parking brake is then releaced and the service brake Grcut will also be pressurized, ‘The brakes on the machine are only operational as long as there Is sufficient pressure remaining in the system, VOLVO Service Information Document Title: Function Group Information Type: Date: towing of machine, |100 Service Information 06.03.2013 general Profile: Towing of machine, general = Use a towbar or heavy wire attached to the front eyes of the machine if the machine has to be towed to a workshop after recovery, ~If the brakes are not operational, always use a towbar, The towing vehicle must be at least as heavy as the vehicle in tow and have sufficient engine and braking capacities to pull and brake both vehicles on uphill and downhill inclines. When it is impossible to drain directly into a container, use @ pump or connect hose for safe handling of the fluid Oils freely discharged into the environment cause damage and are a fire hazard. Used cils and other fluids must be taken care of by dispacal firm where knowledge to handle these types of waste exists. — Use lifting equipment with the lifting capacity at least equalling the weight of the part or component you are lifting. The following safety instructions must be followed: —Do not weld or cut near polymer materials (plastics or rubber) without frst protecting them from the heat, Never burn polymers when discarding them. Be careful when handling machines that have been exposed to intense heat or have been burnt. — Always use protective glasses/goggles, gloves and approved breathing protection. Figure 1 Fluor rubber Certain seals designed to withstand high operating temperatures (ie. in engines, brakes, transmissions, axles, hydraulic motors and pumps) can be made af fluor rubber which will farm hydrogen flucride and hydrofluoric acid when heated to high temperatures, This acid is highly acidic and corrosive and can not be removed by rinsing or waching it off the skin, Hydrofluoric acid also causes very severe burns which take a very long time to heal, AAs a rule, injured tissue must be removed surgically. It can take several hours after contact with the acid before any symptoms become apparent and thus there is no immediate warning of contact. The acid may remain on machine parts for several years after a fire If swelling, redness or a burnings sensation appear and there is suspicion of contact with heated fluor rubber, contact a physician immediately. If a machine or component has been burned or exposed to to intense heat, it must be handled by specially trained personnel. Thick protective rubber gloves and tight-fitting safety goggles must be ‘worn when handling machines or any components after fires. ‘The area around a heated part which is suspected of being made of fluor rubber must be decontaminated ly thorough and ample washing with lime water ( 2 solution or suspension of calcium hydroxide, that is, slaked lime in water). Upon completion of the work, protective gloves are washed in the lime water and discarded in an appropriate manner. Never burn discarded painted parts, rubber or plastic detalls. This type of waste must be disposed of by a licensed disposal company, Checklist The following protective measures must under all circumstances be taken when handling machines or components damaged by intense heat or fire; ~As.a precaution, always handle all seals (O-rings, axle seals and all other oll seals) as if they were made of fluor rubber. Never touch burned components with bare hands when there is risk of contact with melted polymer materials.
