All-out Rescue For Cow Stuck For 12 Hours In Chest-deep Mud In Pa.

Field

The cow kept sinking deeper into the mud, so an all-out rescue effort swung into action.

The unusual animal rescue effort happened last week in Jeannette, Westmoreland County. A muddy
field turned into a 12-hour trap for a cow stuck in chest-deep muck, as KDKA TV in Pittsburgh reports.

So, the Westmoreland / Fayette / Allegheny County Animal Response Team came to the rescue, along
with some ambulance and fire teams that usually save humans, not cows.

KDKA credits the Grandview Volunteer Fire Department with putting tarps around the female cow and
removing a good amount of the mud that had her weighed down and unable to move.

From there, response teams, which included the Penn Township Ambulance Association, Penn Township
Police Department and Penn Township Public Works, used tow straps and a Becker’s sling to lift and
move the mooing cow to a safer – less muddy -- area. (Additional details and multiple rescue photos

Humane officers and veterinarians were on the scene to tend to the cow. After her muddy, 12-hour
ordeal, the cow was completely played out from standing and struggling so long.

So crews positioned the cowed cow to lay on her side as a veterinarian took over her care, KDKA
reports, adding: Workers encircled her with a small temporary fence so she wouldn’t be disturbed.
Then, she was tucked in and warmed up with blankets after all those hours stuck in the cold, wet mud.

A detailed Facebook post from the animal response team, complete with cow-rescue photos, said in
part: “We can assure you that the animal was treated humanely on scene and with the utmost care and
concern for its welfare at all times by all responders on scene.”

All’s well that ends well. At last report, the cleaned-up cow was mooing toward a complete recovery.
