Subordinating Conjunctions

• A subordinating conjunction joins two clauses to make one grammatically dependent on the
other.
• The clause that a subordinating conjunction introduces, is subordinate, or dependent,
because it cannot stand by itself as a complete sentence.

Common subordinating conjunctions: than, after, although, because, when, until, while, even if, as, since etc...

Directions: Underline the subordinating conjunction in each sentence below.

1. Although we’ve known each other for a very long time, we’re no more than acquaintances.

2. Mac, Richard, and Jose camped out in the backyard, so that they could watch a meteor storm.

3. Regular exercise is recommended because it helps you stay fit and healthy.
