Active citizenship means people getting involved in their local communities and

democracy at all levels, from towns to cities to nationwide activity. It can be as small as
a campaign to clean up your street or as big as educating young people about
democratic values, skills and participation. Active citizenship is one of the most
important steps towards healthy societies especially in new democracy. It is very crucial
in changing one’s country for betterment. Through the constant involvement of each
citizen in any way possible; and through an effective and essential practice of
democracy, a country would preferably be innovated and well-developed, with
empowered citizens who are working and participating to attain the sole goal of
betterment for everyone.

However now that we are in a pandemic because Corona Virus has taken the
world with a storm; Every community is battling a war with an invisible, deadly enemy,
and every one of us is trying to live our everyday life coping with the threats that the
pandemic had brought; and as it continue to be in the forefront of daily news coverage,
it is undeniable that the COVID-19 gave birth to another widespread illness. Due to the
fact that global economics have been all but paralyzed---- its downturn lead to
unemployment, financial insecurity, and poverty. The priorities of the people are blurry;
all we ever wanted is to survive; being the country’s citizen is harder than to be a
mother, father or a friend. Even so, it is not an excuse for us to neglect our role in the
society. We have to always keep in mind that awareness and engagement in political
issues among our society is vital since government and politics impacts nearly every
aspect of our lives, and as part of the society we are held accountable. Our power is not
does not stop in voting, we have to be involved---- it is not a choice to make, rather it is
our obligation as part of the democracy.

Now is the perfect time to be an active citizen, everyone is battling their everyday
life, struggling to overcome every problem brought by the pandemic and we need
accountability. This is not the time to lose our voice and enjoy privilege, let’s demand
transparency, not only for the sake of democracy but also for the sake of our fellow
countrymen as well.
