CHEVRON SPRING

Product description

Chevron springs are elastomeric springs with dome-

shaped layers supporting the wheel bearings in pairs
at a small angle compared to the z-axis. This arrange-
ment made laterally to the wheel-set bearing allows
very small spaces between the wheel-set bearings
and the bogie frame (space-saving design).

Product advantages

The special construction of Chevron springs makes it

possible to achieve a wide spectrum of stiffness com-
binations by modifying the dome angle, the mounting
angle and the number of layers. The homogeneous
distribution of the elongation values in conjunction with
long spring excursions in z-direction has a positive im-
pact on the settling behavior and the service lifetime, if
properly conceived.
Chevron springs are characterized by a relatively
homogeneous distribution of the elongation values in
conjunction with long spring excursions in z-direction.
This exerts a positive influence on the settling behavior
and service lifetime.

Field of application

Chevron springs are used on all rail vehicles – from

DOUGHNUT SPRING

Product description

The damping function is assumed with this type of

construction by an elastomeric ring which is subject
to forced movements between an outer globe and an
inner mandrel. The characteristic curve of this primary
spring is heavily dependent on the mandrel and globe
geometry. This also makes it possible to obtain fairly
progressive characteristic curves just like those required
for freight-car bogies and their great load differences,
for example.

Product advantages

A doughnut spring features a small overall height, as

compared with other solutions like helical springs, for
example. Transversal and longitudinal stiffness values
are relatively low, i.e. they range from 1 to 5 kN/
mm.We have made excellent experiences with elasto-
meric compounds specially tailored to this component
with numerous parts over lengthy periods of time. The
doughnut springs from Schwab Vibration Control are
characterized by a long service lifetime and low sett-
ling values.

Field of application
Application Primary level | Product Doughnut spring

Doughnut springs are primarily used in freight-car bo-

gies on which the progressive characteristic line is re-
quired for significant load differences.

Schwab Vibration Control | Applications and Products 15

Product advantages
• Optimum settling
• Long service lifetime
• Long spring excursions

FRAME SUPPORT BEARINGS

Product description

The frame support bearing combines a helical spring

acting essentially in vertical direction with an elasto-
meric layer, which also ensures the guiding function in
x- and y-direction. The latter acts as a virtual axle sling
in kinematic terms.

Product advantages

• Long spring excursions in the steel spring

• Optimum settling and long service lifetime based
on defined stiffness values in x- and y-direction
(less in z-direction) and defined forces on the
elastomeric bearing
• Individual adjustment of Cz, Cx, Cy within very
broad ranges

Field of application

Frame supporting bearings are used in conjunction

with a helical spring essentially acting in vertical di-
rection and work like a virtual axle link in kinematic
terms.

LAMINATE SPRING

Product description

Laminate springs usually consist of plane-parallel

plates with one or several elastomer layers molded on
between them. The connecting geometry can be de-
signed according to the building space requirements
involved.

Product advantages

• Laminate springs prevent structure-borne noises

from being transmitted from the wheel set to the
bogie frame in a quite efficient manner.
• Low longitudinal and transversal stiffness values
• Laminate springs from Schwab Vibration Control
are characterized by a well-defined settling beha-
vior, tight process tolerances and a long service
lifetime.

Field of application

Laminate springs are primarily used in the light-rail sec-

tor as a universal and cost-efficient component.

SPRING SHIMS

Product description

Spring shims reduce the transmission of structure-borne

noises on helical springs, assume an electrical insu-
lating function and reduce bending loads on helical
springs. They usually consist of two or several flat plates
incorporating a molded-on elastomeric layer.
The ratio between pressure and thrust stiffness can be
adjusted over a wide range, depending on the design
given to the elastomeric layer.
The elastomeric compounds used for spring shims are
characterized, in particular, by well-defined settling va-
lues.

Product advantages

Spring shims from Schwab Vibration Controlare cha-

racterized by well-defined settling values, tight pro-
cess tolerances and a long service lifetime. Schwab

AXLE-GUIDE BEARINGS

Product description

Axle-guide bearings incorporated in axle links are used

not only for transmitting driving and braking forces, but
also for guiding the wheel set in longitudinal and trans-
versal direction.
Depending on the combination of stiffness desired in
various directions, we offer construction types with and
without any void with bushing-shaped, spherical or co-
nical elastomeric layers. Integrated limit stops can also
be made.

Product advantages

The guiding system of a wheel set by means of an

axle-guide bearing has been proving its worth for se-
veral decades by now and is characterized, in parti-
cular, by a high degree of reliability. The axle link is
integrated to the axle-bearing case, thus leaving a sin-
gle axle-guide bearing as a connection to the bogie
frame. The latter assumes the cross-guiding function for
the wheel set, too.
The most diversified combinations of rigidity can be
made, depending on the requirements involved. In
this context, torsional rigidity can be maintained to a
low level as parasitic stiffness related to the primary

Field of application

Axle-guide bearings are used for all standard-gauge

railroads, i.e. from TRAM all the way through to high-
speed trains.

AXLE-GUIDE RODS

Product description

An axle-guide rod connects the axle-bearing case to

the bogie frame. It comprises two elastomeric layers,
thus making it possible for the wheel set to move freely
in cross direction.
A cranked version makes it possible to use the lateral
excursion for radial adjustment of the wheel set – to-
gether with a significant reduction in transverse forces
and wear.
Axle-guide rods with three elastomeric layers constitute
a special form. These triangular guide rods also as-
sume the transversal guiding function and are similar,
therefore, to the axle link in kinematic terms.

Product advantages

Axle-guide rods exhibit a restricted parasitic stiffness in

relation to the primary spring. The rigidity of the axle
link can be adjusted over a wide range, regardless
of the primary spring involved. They can be designed
with a flame cut, cast or forged guide-rod body – re-
gardless of the demands made in terms of quantity
and resistance. A design as a straight and even guide
rod featuring similarly oriented eyes is not absolutely
necessary in this context. Cranked versions or oppo-
sed eyes are feasible as well. Application Primary level | Product Axel-guide rods

We supply the guide rods ready for assembly and

with a treated surface provided with the paint of your
choice.

Field of application

Axle guides are used in all standard-gauge railroads,

especially in locomotives.

Reduction of wear

The maintenance costs for the infrastructure constitute a si-

gnificant part of the overall costs of the railway operations.
Increasing axle loads, higher speeds and the greater axle
control stiffness required for that led to a significant increase
of this cost in the previous years.

In the United Kingdom as well as in Sweden intensive studies

on the relationships between the vehicle properties and the
wear of wheel and rail were conducted over the years which
led to new fee models for the track access. These models
reward flexible axle control with lower fees.

Measurements in the vehicles secured with HALL in the United

Kingdom and Switzerland show a significant regression of
wear and the rolling contact fatigue (RCF) in wheel and rail
by using HALL.

AIR SPRING SYSTEM

Product description

Air springs and/or air spring systems are used over the
secondary spring range between the bogie and the
car body, as resilient mounts for the car body.
An air spring system usually consists of air spring bel-
lows and a rubber-metal element serving as an auxi-
liary and/or emergency spring. Such a combination
makes it possible to achieve a soft vertical and lateral
suspension, thus decoupling the car body from the bo-
gie. This also enables the bogie to steer in bends.

Product advantages

Air springs enhance driving comfort considerably, re-

gardless of the load conditions involved, stabilize the
dynamic properties of the rail vehicle and reduce the
transmission of structure-borne noises between the bo-
gie and the car body.

Field of application

Air spring systems are conceived for rail vehicles used

in passenger transport and essentially help to enhance
driving comfort.

AUXILIARY SPRING (CONICAL / LAMINATE SPRING)

Product description

Air spring systems have proven their worth as seconda-

ry mounts on rail vehicles for passenger transport and
enjoy a wide spectrum of applications.
Such systems combine air spring bellows with a rub-
ber-metal spring system.
These rubber-metal spring systems are designated as
auxiliary springs and relieve air spring bellows in the
event of large excursions.
They also act as vertical emergency springs in the
event of air spring failure, thus ensuring the emergency
running properties of the vehicle.
Depending on the transversal, longitudinal and vertical
stiffness required, these auxiliary springs can be desi-
gned as individual conical springs, laminate springs or
as combined conical and laminate springs.

Product advantages

Rubber-metal springs from Schwab Vibration Control

are characterized by a high production quality and
tight process tolerances as well as an excellent service
lifetime.
As far as conical and laminate springs incorporated
to auxiliary springs are concerned, Schwab Vibration
Control has already been known for quite a long time

SPRING Pad

Product description

Spring pads reduce the transmission of structure-borne

noises on helical springs, ensure electrical insulation
functions and reduce bending loads on helical springs.
Usually, they consist of two or several even plates pro-
vided with a vulcanized elastomeric layer.
The ratio between pressure and thrust stiffness can be
adjusted over a wide range, depending on the design
given to the elastomeric layer.
The elastomeric compounds used for spring pads are
characterized, in particular, by well-defined settling
characteristics.

Vibration Control are well-defined settling characteri-
stics, tight process tolerances and a long service life-
time. In addition to tried-and-tested versions comprising
two even plates, Schwab Vibration Control also deve-
lops spring pads in line with its customers’ wishes on
the basis of elastomeric and connecting geometries for
specific applications. As a result, the customer obtains
a product optimally tailored to his requirements.

Field of application Application Secondary level | Product Spring pad

Spring pads are practically used on any helical spring

as an auxiliary spring aimed at reducing the transmissi-
on of structure-borne noises and at restricting bending
loads.
Spring pads from Schwab Vibration Control can be
found in numerous vehicle projects of major system ma-
nufacturers. They are used both in locomotives and in
railroad cars. Modern railroad motor trains as well as
subway trains and TRAMS are equipped with spring
pads, too.

pending on the profile of requirements involved. The
transmission of structure-borne noises should, at the
same time, be prevented as far as possible.
The rubber-metal elements incorporated to the guide
rods are specially developed for this application. Bu-
shings exhibiting a strongly progressive characteristic
curve can, for example, be used in this way, too. Such
bushings decouple structure-borne noises in a very ef-
ficient manner under normal running conditions. High
forces are, in turn, transmitted reliably in starting and
braking operation.

ANTI-ROLL BAR SYSTEM

Product description

The car body is guided and especially the rolling an-

gle is limited by means of anti-roll bar systems consi-
sting of a torsion bar and guide rods.

Product advantages

Very special demands are made on the guide rods

(pendulum) of anti-roll bar systems.
The inserted bushings must transmit the high rolling
forces, on the one hand, and a very efficient decou-
pling of structure-borne noises should be achieved with
the lowest possible spring stiffness, on the other. Both
objectives are reached by means of maintenance-free
guide rods and rubber-metal elements specially deve-
loped for anti-roll bar systems.
Should the angles appearing in the rubber-metal ele-
ments exceed the values permissible for this type of
construction, maintenance-free plain bearings in pen-
dulum supports may also be offered.

Field of application

Anti-roll bar systems are required with a relatively soft

secondary spring in all vehicles.

TRANSVERSAL/LONGITUDINAL BUMP STOP

Product description

Bump stops are particularly suited for flexible excursion

limitation and the absorption of shocks on the bogie
(transversal and longitudinal stops) and generally as
limits stops.
Bump stops usually consist of a metal disk with a threa-
ded bolt or nut. The vulcanized-on elastomeric layer
can be designed with a cylindrical or parabolic sha-
pe.

Product advantages

A “softer” characteristic curve progression, compared

to a cylindrical design, is obtained by a parabolic
Bump stop design (viewed as a longitudinal section).
The retracted design of the rubber contour on round
buffers is leading to significantly higher service lifetime
values with the same spring deflection.
Bump stops are characterized by a simple assembly
and sturdiness. Universal applications are based on a
wide range of possible dimensions.

SUPPORT BEARINGS

Product description

Support bearings consist of two conical metal plates

connected by a rubber layer. Supporti bearings can
absorb high radial and axial forces, thus allowing an-
gular movements.

Product advantages

• Good insulating properties

• Easy installation
• Various degrees of stiffness can be adjusted with
one and the same building space by modifying
the angle of the rubber layer

Field of application

Support bearings are mounted in pairs and in pre-

stressed condition. Major loads should be directed to
the bearing in axial direction.
Schwab Vibration Control also offers pairs of support
bearings with an integrated vertical adjustment system.
They make it possible to adjust most easily the height
of the motor-gearbox unit from the axle. The height
can be modified at any time, if necessary, by turning
a screw. The correct adjustment of the height of the
motor-gearbox unit exerts an influence on the flexible

SPHERICAL BEARINGS

Product description

Spherical bearings incorporate a spherical rubber la-

yer which can absorb axial, radial and torsional dis-
placements. Spherical bearings are usually designed
with greater rigidity in radial direction than in axial
direction, and allow greater cardanic angular excursi-
ons, as compared with ultra-bushings.
Spherical bearings consist of an inner ball and an
outer spherical shell which are firmly connected with
each other by means of a vulcanized elastomeric la-
yer. Spherical bearings incorporate “pre-stressed” rub-
ber obtained by calibration and this exerts a positive
and lasting influence on service lifetime, as is also the
case with ultra-bushings.

Product advantages

• Maintenance-free articulation
• Restricted settling under radial loads
• High cardanic stress resistance
• Movements in all directions

Field of application

Spherical bearings can be supplied with various di-

mensions and designs.

WEDGE-SHAPED LAYER SPRINGS

Product description

Wedge-shaped layer springs consist of radially ar-

ranged elastomeric and metallic layers, the central
wedges and end plates being connected to the cou-
pling elements.

Product advantages

• Maintenance-free element
• Restricted settling under pressure loads
• Transmission of high torques within a small buil-
ding space
• Sustains high instantaneous loads
A wide spectrum of different coupling properties can
be achieved within one and the same building space
by modifying the number and geometry of layers. Very
high and also intermittent torques in couplings can be
transmitted easily, thanks to the great compression stiff-
ness of the layers.

Field of application

Wedge-shaped layer springs are developed specifi-

cally for couplings incorporating such layer springs.

Application Power train | Product Wedge-shaped layer springs

Their applications range from light rail to standard-gau-
ge railroads. They may also be used in the high-speed
sector by selecting the appropriate geometry and ma-
terial accordingly.

cies and amplitudes involved
• Integrated spring excursion limitation
• All-round rotation

Field of application

Hydro-mounts are particularly suited when low fre-

quencies emerge as an excitation frequency within
the damping system. They achieve a high damping
degree within the natural frequency range of the sy-
stem as well as good insulating properties beyond this
range. Application Machine mounts | Product Hydro-mounts

Vibrations inside the damping system triggering sound-

conducting or radiating effects and primarily entailed
by excitation amplitudes or dynamic forces within the
audible frequency range are significantly reduced.
The hydraulic mechanism integrated to the bushing
with damping properties depending on the frequen-
cies and amplitudes involved is designed for acting
in z-direction. The resonance ratio can be significantly
reduced when gearing the damping maximum degree
of the hydro-mount to the critical frequency (frequency
of resonance) of the spring-mounted mass.

WEDGE-SHAPED BEARINGS

Product description

Wedge-shaped bearings consist of an outer V-shape

metal part, of an inner wedge as well as of one or se-
veral shims, if necessary. The metallic components are
connected by vulcanized-on elastomeric layers.
The stiffness ratio in x-, y- and z-direction can be ad-
justed over a broad range by designing the elastome-
ric layers accordingly. “Soft” or “hard” excursion limita-
tions can optionally be achieved in all directions.
Wedge-shaped bearings are prepared for attachment
with screws. Various modes of attachment can be
made according to the specific projects involved.

Field of application

Wedge-shaped bearings are essentially used for

mounting diesel engines and power packs in light-rail
and subway vehicles.

CONICAL BEARINGS

Product description

Conical bearings dampen vertical vibrations, insulate

structure-borne noises and can absorb strong horizon-
tal forces (e.g. braking forces) at the same time.
Conical bearings are supplied without any washers as
standard components.
The bearing element is composed of one inner and
one outer metal part. The outer metal component is
provided with a multi-hole flange and the inner com-
ponent incorporates a through-hole with or without any
thread, or a threaded blind hole. Both conical metal
parts are connected by means of a vulcanized-on ela-
stomeric layer.

Product advantages

• Long service lifetime

• Optimum settling
• Independent centering under axial loads
• Meet RoHS requirements

Field of application

When motors are mounted with adequately arranged

conical bearings, the torque is softly dampened, thus

leading to a reduction in the vibrations directed to the
fastening points and, therefore, to a smoother running
behavior.
The dead weight should primarily be absorbed in lon-
gitudinal direction (+Z).
Schwab Vibration Control’s range of conical bearings
includes a large number of different versions offering
optimal solutions to any conceivable cases of appli-
cation/assembly. Pull-off securing appliances can be
made, too.
