Every morning Jim gets up and turns on the news. “With the second non-indictment of a white
police officer who killed an unarmed black man in two weeks, the chant ‘no justice, no peace’
continues to ring out in protests around the country. On Wednesday, after the New York City
grand jury declined to indict the police officer who put Eric Garner in the chokehold that led to
his death, CNN reports, “hundreds of demonstrators gathered at various points in Manhattan...
marching peacefully north as crowds formed near Rockefeller Center for the lighting of the
Christmas tree. ‘No Justice. No peace,’ they chanted. ‘No racist police.’ Jim turns off the tv and
Melissa calls to check up on her husband, Jim.“Hey, honey. So, I stopped by the station
to pick up the last of my things; I’m going to wait in my old office until you get here. Have you
And he responded, “Babe, you know you can’t be on your feet in your condition, and
yes, we are almost there a few blocks. Is there anything you want me to pick up before I get
there?” She responds, “No, I’m fine. Just let me talk to Lily.”
Jim then clicks the speaker button on his phone.“Go ahead, you’re on speaker.” he says
while gesturing to tell Lily that her mother is on the phone since she is unaware while playing on
her tablet.
“Hey, mommy! Grandma and Grandpa are going to help me build a treehouse in the
backyard, and I am eating chicken nuggets, and french fries from McDonald's, and orange juice,
“So a treehouse?” Melissa says before being interrupted by loud talking in the
background. “Everybody listen up!” Melissa then continues talking. “That’s probably my
The voice in the background grows louder. “The police killed our families, and we got
no justice! And without justice, we have no peace, and without peace, we have nothing. So since
A police officer walks up to the man, shows the gun on his hip, and then points to the
exit. One guy then walks up to the police officer and looks him directly into his eyes. “You’re
right, absolutely right,” he says while angrily shaking his head. The man continues talking and
pointing his finger towards the police officer. “Okay, but we want to get our message across
before we leave.”
Melissa continues talking. “So when we go out to dinner tonight.” The sound of gunshots
“ Melissa, what the hell is that? Are you okay?” A worried Jim cries.
Melissa responds, “Yeah, I'm fine, just,” while peeking out of the office room window
before being startled by what she sees. Screaming in the background occurs, and loud yelling.
A woman yells, “He has a bomb!” Melissa runs away from the window and hides under
her desk.
“Melissa, did I just hear that he has a bomb? Melissa, get the hell out of there NOW!” a
Melissa is now whispering. “Jim. Jim. I’m scared. I can't; they blocked all the exits.
Listen if I don’t make it.” Melissa whispers as the sound of gunshots becomes louder.
Jim gets cut off by Melissa, who is crying over the phone. “I love you, Jim, and I love
Lily; take care of her, okay. I want you to make sure she has the best life; I don’t think we will
make it. Put Lily on the phone. Put me back on speaker! Jim put me on speaker, please.” Jim
puts the phone on speaker. “Lily, baby, mommy loves you okay and be good for daddy.”
“Melissa! Melissa! I'm on my way.” Jim drives to his parents' house, drops off Lily, and
grabs some guns. Jim then pulls up to a damaged police station and grabs the firearms from his
trunk. “Hello? Anyone?” Jim says to ensure safety to police officers who need help. “Help, over
here.” Jim runs and helps pull people up from the debris and out from under the dead bodies and
heavy furniture. Jim pulls his phone from his back pocket and hands it to an officer.“Here take
my phone. Call ambulances, firefighters, on and off-duty cops, helicopters; we need all the help
we can get.” Minutes later, sirens began to approach. Jim runs back inside to look for Melissa.
Melissa, in shock, begins to yell while shining her phone light. “Help. In here. I'm here.”
Jim runs down the hallways, searching each room until he finds Melissa. He then kneels
next to Melissa’s body. “Melissa, are you okay? Can you move? Are you hurt?” Jim says while
behind Jim. “Jim, behind you!” Melissa yells. The bullet grazes Jim's shoulder and shoots
Melissa in the chest. The man fires again and shoots Melissa in her stomach. The man tries to
run, but Jim jumps him and beats him senselessly until he cannot move. After that, he shoots him
in the head. The wall collapses on the man and blocks Jim’s path.
Jim snaps back to reality and runs over Melissa.“Melissa, no, no, Melissa, I am going to
get you out of here. Okay?” Jim says while sobbing and rubbing her head in comfort. Jim then
rips his shirt and wraps it around her wounds to stabilize Melissa's shoulder and legs. “I love
you, okay? Stay with me,” Jim says while moving the debris and desk off Melissa's legs. “You're
okay now; I got you,” Jim says while carrying Melissa through all the debris and electric wiring.
Once he is outside, Jim and the paramedics lift Melissa and put her onto a stretcher. “Here, take
her. I am her husband; let me go with her,” Jim says while sobbing as they're putting her in an
ambulance. While in the back of the ambulance, they try to resuscitate Melissa and stop the
Minutes later, Melissa wakes up and says, “Baby. The baby.” Then as she finishes her
statement, she goes into lethal shock while spitting bloody saliva…
Every morning Jim gets up and turns on the news “Today, all over the nation, police have
been targeted....”
