Varietal selection

When it comes to varietal selection, in growing peanut and mungbean, farmers in our
locality don’t really consider choosing a particular variety. Farmers plant or grow any variety of
mungbean and peanut as long as the seeds of mungbean are still green and in peanut as long as
the seeds are not damaged.
Site selection and characterization
In site selection and characterization, farmers grow peanuts and mungbeans in semi-
upland areas, and other farmers prefer to grow these crops in slight sloping areas on their farms.
Land preparation
In land preparation, farmers practice clearing or removing weeds in the area, followed by
plowing, harrowing, and furrowing for peanut.
Plant establishment
In plant establishment, for peanut, farmers practice straight row planting with an
estimated planting distance, and for mungbean, farmers usually practice the broadcasting method
in planting mungbean seeds in the field.
Water management
In water management, farmers practice manual irrigation daily. Most farmers that I
interviewed use pitchers and buckets for watering, and others practice manual irrigation with the
use of sprinklers.
Nutrient management
When it comes to growing peanut and mungbean, farmers in our locality don’t usually
practice applying synthetic fertilizers as the soil in their area or field is still fertile according to
them and the area where they grow peanuts and mungbeans is not usually wide. However,
sometimes farmers use chicken dung to fertilize peanut.
Pest management (weeds, vertebrate pest, insects and diseases)
In pest and weed management, farmers practice manual weeding and hand picking of
insect pests. Farmers don’t practice applying chemical pesticides to their peanut and mungbean
plants.
Harvest and post-harvest management
Farmers practice manual harvesting. Farmers harvest peanut when the bottom leaves wilt
and turn yellow or yellowish, and in mungbean, they harvest when the majority of pods are
mature and 90% of the pods have turned black. Farmers’ sundry the mungbeans and remove the
seeds from the pods. Farmers sell their harvested peanuts, and sometimes they keep and store
some of their harvest to be planted.
