Message in a Bottle

After a tragic plane crash, you are stranded on a deserted island in the middle of the Pacific.
The good news is you survived. The bad news is you’re alone and no one knows where you are.
Among the wreckage, you find paper, a pen, and a glass bottle. Being the clever person you
are, you decide to write a message and throw it in the ocean in hopes someone finds it.

In the note, you describe the island, citing geographical landmarks and vegetation. Because you
know there are many uninhabited islands in the Pacific, you need to be as detailed as possible,
and to ensure you describe everything you make a list of everything you have seen while
exploring your new habitat. Once you are sure you have included everything of importance,
you write your note. Since you are resourceful, you have also created some type of signal to
alert passing ships or planes, and you include information on this signal to give your search
party another clue how to find you.

Since you know not every country bordering the Pacific speaks the same language of you, you
include a map of the island, showing the landmarks you listed in the letter, and your signal.

For this activity, you will need to use the sensory images and descriptive language we have
described in class. You will also need to use your imagination to create an island. You may
loosely base your description on the island in The Lord of the Flies, however the island you
describe must be of your own creation. I recommend searching Pacific islands online to
generate ideas.
