0 CONCLUSION

This assignment is to study reservoirs. Identifying major and minor components of a reservoir.
Thempana reservoir was built in 1930-1933 by British. It was an idea of Duke of the Edinburgh. It was built
to supply water for army camps were in Udawalpola. Now this is maintain by Kurunegala Urban Council.
There were 12 workers to maintain it. But now there is only two securities. And they are also maintaining it.
So the maintain is very poor.
There are no sluice door. 3 pipes are connecting to reservoir near middle of the reservoir by turning their
valves water pour through pipes. There is a tunnel going through bund and going under the water. We can
go to start of the pipe line. We never seen such a system anywhere.
Factors must be considered for bund designing
 Size/Capacity
 Bund wall penetrations
 Wall height
 Construction materials
 Cost
 Measures to prevent erosion
 Slope stability analysis

Factors must be considered for spill designing

 Type of the spill

 Full flood level
 Reservoir capacity

Factors must be considered for sluice designing

 Location of the sluice

 Rainfall
 Type of the sluice

Due to some development projects some water springs were destroyed. Due to the drying of springs the
volume of water that can be obtained has been reduce to a lover amount. Because of poor maintenance
the expected outcome of the water scheme cannot obtain.
Since the reservoir has been constructed considering the geological and topographical features there is no
need of external power source to pump and filter water. They only use air comperssior to backwash filters.
By this assignment we have learned unknown knowledge about known place. We have visited Thampana
since childhood. But never known this much of fascinating things about this.
