ARCHITECTURE
• is the art of building. It satisfies a basic, universal
human need for shelter.
• the art and science of designing buildings, and other
structures to meet our personal and communal
needs.
• An architect is an artist who designs structures to
enclose residential, commercial, or public space.
Architects work with construction technologies,
building materials, topography, contractors, and
government regulations within a project budget to
satisfy their clients’ wants and needs.

– Stone, Wood, Concrete, Iron, Steel

Kinds of Architectural

• Post and Lintel
consists of a
horizontal beam called
lintel and two vertical
posts to support it. It
is usually found in
doors and entrances.

wedge-shaped blocks of
stone called voussoirs
held together by a key
stone. It serves to
support other
structures such as roofs
and to be a symbolic
gateway.

hemispherical roof or
ceiling that looks like
an inverted cup. It is
an extension of the
principle of the arch
capable of enclosing a
wide area.

• Vault is an arched
structure of masonry
usually forming a roof
or ceiling. Similar to
dome, it is an
extension of the
principle of the arch
capable of enclosing a
vast expanse of space.

braced framework of
beams or bars forming
one or more triangles.
An assemblage of
beams forming a rigid
framework, it is
usually used to
support the roof.

into light and heavy materials.
• Light materials
– paper, nipa, bamboo, and other light wood.
 Advantage. Good Ventilation
 Disadvantage. Not resistance to fire, etc.

– hardwood, stone, concrete (combination of
cement, gravel, and sand), brick, steel, and cast
