THIRD QUARTERLY ASSESSMENT


ENGS02G: Reading and Writing Skills

INSTRUCTIONS

• This is an individual task.


• The digital scrapbook will be graded as the Quarterly Assessment for the 3 rd
quarter.

• The grading for this activity will be based on the rubric prepared (see attached
rubric).

• The student should read, understand, and analyze the given essay entitled “The
Heritage of Smallness” by Nick Joaquin.

• The student will create a digital scrapbook with his/her analysis of the given
essay as the content. The scrapbook should have the following sections:
A. Summary of the Essay
- The summary should be presented through a graphic organizer
personally made by the student.
- The student is allowed to create his/her own graphic organizer.
B. Essay Outline
- The student should organize the ideas through the use of an
outline.
C. Analysis of the Essay
- The student should provide an analysis with two to three
paragraphs through answering the following guide questions:
1. What is the main claim of the author?
2. What is the main purpose of the author?
3. What is his tone in delivering the message and how is this
tone shaped by the language he used?

4. What is the background of the author? How is it connected


with the topic he discussed in the essay?
5. Who are the target readers of the article?
6. What was the context for writing the article? What was the
socio-political, economic, and cultural situation when it
was written?
7. Do you think there is sufficient and valid evidence that
supports the main claim of the author? Justify your answer.
8. What are the other important pieces of information that
might probably be missing? How would these missing
pieces of information influence the overall structure of the
article?
9. What are the logical fallacies and manipulative language
used by the author, if there are any? Was he accurate and
objective in presenting the ideas?

• The format of the digital scrapbook will depend on the student’s preference as
they are free to design their own output. Note that the main sections mentioned
above should be present in the final output.

• The students are expected to be creative in making their digital scrapbook.

• If reference will be used, do not forget to use proper citations.

• You are expected to be honest in preparing and submitting your outputs. You
must cite sources or references for any materials included in your output. In
cases of submission of requirements with dubitable integrity, corrective measures
may be applied depending on the nature of the required output.

• The University shall strictly implement the guidelines concerning academic


integrity stipulated in the Student Handbook. Any form of academic dishonesty,
including, but not limited, to plagiarism and cheating, will be properly addressed
through various academic dishonesty prevention system that is available in the
University, including student disciplinary guidelines.

▪ The deadline of submission is on March 30, 2022, at 11:59 PM.


▪ The scrapbook should be in PDF file following this file name: SURNAME-
SECTION-QA3.pdf
▪ Submission shall be made through myLPU only. Submission through other
platforms will not be acknowledged unless with the permission of the concerned
subject teacher.
▪ You are strongly encouraged to submit the requirements at least 2 to 3 school
days ahead of the deadline.
▪ For those in the Wired Mode, you may submit your requirements through the
myLPU course site. You may also submit them through email provided by your
respective teachers.
▪ Those who chose the Non-wired Mode may submit through either one of the
following means:
o The complete outputs may be placed in a brown envelope labeled with
complete details (i.e. your complete name, student number, section,
course code and the name of the subject teacher) and hand-delivered by
a parent or authorized representative to the LPU Cavite campus. Please
do not forget to set an appointment beforehand. Due to the
implementation of community quarantine, only persons ages 21 and
above are allowed to enter campus.
o You may also opt to send the complete outputs in a brown envelope
labeled with complete details (i.e. your complete name, student number,
section, course code and the name of the subject teacher) through
delivery via courier service. If you will choose to submit this way, please
remember that you will shoulder the fee for such service. Also, you need
to send the requirements via courier at least five (5) days before the
deadline to make sure that it will be received in LPU Cavite at least one
