Problem:

1. A square thread screw has an efficiency of 70% when raising a load. The
coefficient of thread friction is 0.12 with collar friction negligible. The load is 8000
lbs and the pitch diameter is 1.15 in. Find the torque that a brake mounted on the
screw must exert when lowering the load at a uniform rate. Ans. T = 890 lb. in

2. A power screw consumes 6 HP in raising 2800 lb weight at the rate of 30 ft/min.

Determine the efficiency of the screw. Ans. 42.4%

3. A triple threaded square powers screw with a root diameter of 2 in and 2 threads/
in is used in conjunction with a collar with OD of 4in and ID of 2.5in. Find the
force necessary to lower a 1500 lb load if the operating force is applied at a
distance of 36in. The coefficient of friction is 0.2 for both threads and collar.

4. A load of 10,000 lbs is carried by a 2.5-inch thread acme screw of standard
proportion. The pitch is 1/3 inch and the pitch diameter is 2 1/3 inches. The OD of
the collar is 4 inches and ID is 1.25 inches. If coefficient of both collar and
threads are 0.15, find the Hp needed if the load is lifted at the rate of 15 ft/min.
