SUB-TOPIC : PREPOSITIONS

Prepositions are short words that are used after verbs, adjectives or nouns so as
to show a relationship between the subject and the object of the sentence.

Types of prepositions
a) Prepositions of time e.g before , since , till , after etc
b) Prepositions of place e.g above , on , below , against etc
c) Prepositions of movement e.g forward , across , through e.t.c

Prepositions of time
1) Using ‘since’ and ‘for’
‘For’ is used when the period or duration is known.

Examples
1. She has been studying at Namagunga for two years.
2. We have lived in America for six months.

‘Since’ is used when a point of time at which the action started is given or known
(Past till now)

Examples
1. Sudanese have been fighting since 2010.
2. He has lived in Kenya since his childhood.

Lesson 2

2) Using ‘ago’ and ‘before’

‘Ago’ is used for a certain time in the past.

Examples
1. My mother left our home a fortnight ago.
2. We arrived here some minutes ago.

‘Before’ is used to refer to earlier than a certain point of time.


Examples
1. The lesson started before 6:00am.
2. Deo learnt French before he joined university.

3) Using ‘in’ and ‘on’


‘In’ is used for months or seasons, time of the day, year and after a certain
period of time (it answers the questions when).

Examples
1. Americans wear thick clothes in winter.
2. Racheal will arrive in an hour from now.

‘On’ is used with days of the week.


Examples
1. We shall meet the Nigerians on Monday.
2. The Premier League will resume on Sunday.

4. Using ‘at’ , ‘till’ , ‘until’ and ‘to

‘To’ , ‘till’ and ‘until’ are used to mark the beginning and the end of a period of
time .
‘To’ is also used to tell time.
‘At’ is used for night, weekend and a certain point of time.

Examples

1. I will meet the French teacher at 2:00pm.
3. We shall not travel to London until we finish studies.
3. We learn English from Monday to/ till Friday.

Lesson 3

Prepositions of place

Using ‘at’ and ‘in’

‘at’ is used for smaller places e.g air port, taxi ranks , church, school etc.

Examples
1. The visitors arrived at the airport before noon.
2. I will find you at the church.

‘in’ is used for bigger places e.g district , country , cities

Examples
1. Sarah’s parents live in Kampala.
2. Peter was born at Lugazi in Buikwe District.

Lesson 4

Using ‘between’ and ‘among’.

• ‘between’ is used for two things or persons


Examples
1. The money was divided between a Congolese and a Kenyan.
2. The two Chinese guests shared the meal between themselves.

• ‘among’ is used for more than two things or persons


Examples
1. The four pupils shared the fruit among themselves.
2. He divided the land among his six sons.

Using ‘beside’ and ‘besides’

• ‘besides’ means next to


Examples
1. I sit beside an Indian in class.
2. Tanzania is located beside Uganda.

• ‘besides’ means in addition to or apart from.


Examples
1. She studied French besides Chinese.

2. Most Ugandans speak English besides their local language.
