QUESTION NO 1:

and at t=-2 and r=1 if w=xy+2, x=r2t2 and

Find

SOLUTION:
Given

Putting values of x and y in eq. (1)

Case 1:
Taking partial derivative w.r.t t

Taking again partial derivative w.r.t t

Putting t = -2 and r = 1 in above eq.

Case 2:
Taking partial derivative w.r.t r

Taking again partial derivative w.r.t r

Putting t=-2 and r = 1 in above eq.

2nd Method:

Taking derivative of equation (1) w.r.t x

Taking derivative of equation (1) w.r.t y

Taking derivative of equation (2) w.r.t t

Taking derivative of equation (3) w.r.t t

Putting all values in eq. (4)

Now taking partial derivative w.r.t t

Putting r = 1 in the above eq.

Taking derivative of eq. (1) w.r.t x

Taking derivative of eq. (1) w.r.t y

Taking derivative of eq. (2) w.r.t r

Taking derivative of eq. (3) w.r.t r

Putting all values in eq. (5)

Now taking partial derivative w.r.t t

Putting t = -2 in the above eq.

QUESTION NO 2:

Define the criteria of extreme values (maximum and minimum values) for a function of several

variables. Deduce that criteria for the function of two variables and find the critical points and

extreme values of the function .

SOLUTION:

Define the Criteria:

We know that

1. If the value of D(x,y) is greater than 0, and fxx > 0 then the point is minimum.

2. If the value of D(x,y) is greater than 0, and fxx < 0 then the point is maximum

3. If the value of D(x,y) is less than 0, then the point is saddle.

4. If the value of D(x,y) is equal then the test is inconclusive.

Now

The given function

Differentiate w.r.t x

Differentiate w.r.t y

For critical point we take

The eq. 1 becomes

2xy =0

So,

x =0 and y=0

Similarly, eq. 2 becomes

There is also

x =0 and y=0

So, the critical point is (0, 0)

Now

We find the extreme point

We calculate
So,

Similarly

Now by using formula

So,

If the value of D(x,y) is equal then the test is inconclusive.
