Reality and
the Apologist
Years ago, a friend told me that I
was an apologist. I would have been
flattered…if I’d known what that
meant. Later I encountered one of the
greatest of Christian apologists, C. S.
Lewis. Then I came across a quotation
from Lewis that explained a vague
disquiet that follows me around.
“Apologists”, he concluded, “can be
saved only by falling back continually
from the web of our own arguments
into the reality—from Christian
apologetics into Christ Himself.”
Lewis was remarkable in this
regard. He was an intelligent, highly-
educated, well-read man who also
had the good sense to doubt himself,
to examine himself—which one
cannot do without self-doubt. Lewis
understood the spiritual dangers of
vanity and what a thin web is woven
by a good argument. He said, “No
doctrine is dimmer to the eye of
faith than that which a man has just
successfully defended.” Doctrine and
apologetics are essential, otherwise
you would never know where you
are or what you should do next.
But there is also a temptation to
vanity. This was never clearer to me
than when I read that quotation:

web of our own arguments into the

I think there are people who will
be profoundly surprised to find me
standing next to them on the sea
of glass, before the Lamb of God in
the resurrection. In fact, I might be
as surprised as they are. Imagine
that you have made it, you’ve
been raised from the dead. You’re
standing before him, the judge of all
the earth, you can see him as he is;
and standing alongside you are two
figures you recognize immediately
who come from different religious
backgrounds: Billy Graham and
Pope John Paul II. If you know much
about Catholic and Baptist doctrine,
you have to ask yourself, “How can
that be possible?”
I think I finally understand. They
will not owe their presence there to
the fact that they had a correct set
of doctrines. They will not be there
because they kept this or that law,
or this rite or ritual. But, you won’t
be there for that reason either. What
makes it possible for you or anyone
else to stand before God is the grace
of God. And that grace, if it can’t
transcend our doctrinal differences
and our picky little arguments, doesn’t
amount to much. And what makes
that grace possible is Christ himself.
There is this incident in the
ministry of Jesus Christ where one
of the rulers of the Jews named
Nicodemus came to him by night.
After some conversation, Jesus told
him, “No man has ascended up to
heaven, but he that came down from
heaven, even the Son of man which in
in heaven. And as Moses lifted up the
serpent in the wilderness, even so the
Son of man must be lifted up” so that
we can look to him (John 3:14–15).
Remember that Old Testament
story [Num. 21]? A plague had
broken out. Serpents were biting
people. People were dying. God told
Moses to put a brazen serpent up
on a pole, and if they looked up to
that serpent, they lived. If not, they
died. It had nothing to do with their
character, personality, whether they
were obedient or disobedient. They
had to look to the serpent that had
been lifted up.
Then Jesus said to Nicodemus, “For
God so loved the world, that he gave
his only begotten Son, that whosoever
believeth in him should not perish, but
have everlasting life” (John 3:16). Now,
that’s a tremendous promise, but there
is a catch in it: You must believe in him.
You must look to him. You must place
trust in him. “For God sent not his Son
into the world to condemn the world;
but that the world through him might
be saved. He that believes on him is not
condemned: but he that believes not
is condemned already, because he has
not believed in the name of the only
begotten Son of God. And this is the
condemnation…” This is something
else that Jesus tacks on the end of this
that sometimes people don’t get. He
said, “And this is the condemnation,
that light is come into the world, and
men loved darkness rather than light”.
Why? “…because their deeds were evil.
For every one that does evil hates the
light, neither comes to the light, lest his
deeds should be reproved. But he that
does truth comes to the light, that his
deeds may be made manifest, that they
are worked in God” (John 3:17–21).
What makes all the difference? It’s
their deeds. It is what they actually
do. If you say you believe in Christ
and don’t do anything, then you do
not really believe. Many religious
arguments about doctrine, law, or
what have you are mere spiders’ webs.
And you know how you handle a
spider’s web on the porch? You take a
broom and brush it away. Remember,
“Apologists can be saved only by
falling back continually from the
web of our own arguments into the
reality—from Christian apologetics
into Christ Himself.” What exactly
does that mean?
The reality is there was a young
Jewish girl in a little town called
Nazareth who was suddenly visited
by an angel named Gabriel. He was
real. The girl’s name? Mary. She was
real. “And the angel came to her,
and said, ‘Hail, you that are highly
favored, the Lord is with you: blessed
are you among women.’ And when
she saw him, she was troubled at his
saying… And the angel said to her,
‘Fear not, Mary: for you have found
favor with God’” (Luke 1:28–30).
Mary, young as she was, must have
understood the significance of what
he just said.
He is telling Mary that she is going
to be the mother of the Messiah. Her
son is going to sit on the throne of
David, he’s going to reign over the
house of Jacob, of the increase of his
kingdom there will be no end. Mary
put two and two together and asked,
“Well, how can this be?”
It’s hard to imagine how she
might have felt at that time—a babe
growing in her womb, a real child,
to be born nine months later. Day by
day, week by week, she went through
the real symptoms of pregnancy: the
cessation of her monthly period, her

 abdomen beginning to swell, the
realization that there was a baby on
the way. And, of course, there was the
very real problem that her betrothed
husband had: the baby wasn’t his. But
he was a just man, so when the angel
explained it to him all was well.
The story picks up again in Luke 2,
where “Joseph went up from Galilee,
out of the city of Nazareth into Judea
in the city of David, which is called
Bethlehem.” He went there to be
taxed along with Mary, his espoused
wife, who was, in Luke’s expression
“great with child”.
They went to a stable because it
was the only place they could find.
Now, get the reality: there are many
things that can be explained about
this, but the reality is they went into
a stable—the only place they could
sleep—and while there she went into
labor and “brought forth her first-
born son, wrapped him in swaddling
clothes, and laid him in a feeding
trough”. That’s all they had.
The child born there was as real
as you and me. He was as real as any
baby anyone ever held. He was as real
as any baby any mother ever put to her
breast, and he had to drink mother’s
milk just like I did. The reality of
Jesus’ statement to Nicodemus comes

home to me. The reality of giving up
a son has to be considered.
I hadn’t really thought much
about it until I saw the movie The
Bible with George C. Scott (who
played Abraham). He was told by
God to take his only son, Isaac, and
go to a place that God would show
him and offer Isaac there for a burnt
offering. I had read the story in the
Bible, I understood it fully, but Scott’s
portrayal of Abraham’s agony and
his faith brought it home to me. This
was real. It was sort of a two-staged
thing. First of all, the actor plays the
part, which made it real; and then
secondly, the realization that what he
is acting out is something that really
happened to real people in real time.
The world waited 30 years for this
child to become a man, and three
years more for him to accomplish
what he came to do. On that night
before his death three years later,
knowing full well what waited for him
the next day, he got up from supper,
laid aside his garment, girded himself
with a towel and began to wash his
disciples’ feet. It was a familiar thing
to have happen at any supper—but
usually it was done by servants. For
Peter on this night, it was a very real
thing that Jesus was actually holding
Peter’s feet in his hands. Jesus took
water and splashed it on Peter’s feet,
he rubbed his feet, cleaning them, he
put the water between his toes and
opened them up to rinse out whatever
might have been there. Then he took
the towel he was girded with, and the
real Jesus dried Peter’s feet. For Peter
this could not have been more real.
After Jesus had washed their feet
and put his garment back on and sat
down, he said, “Do you know what
I’ve done? You call me Master and
Lord, and you say well; for so I am.
If I then, your Lord and Master, have
washed your feet; you ought to wash
one another’s feet. For I have given
you an example, that you should do as
I have done to you. What I want you
to learn from this is that the servant
is not greater than his lord; neither
is he that is sent greater than he that
sent him. If you know these things,
happy are you if you do them.” Some
Christian churches do this. They
wash one another’s feet; because after
all, Jesus said, “if you know these
things, happy are you—blessed are
you—if you do them.”
After supper, he took bread, he
broke it, and distributed it among
them and told them to eat it. He said,
“This is my body, which is for you.
Do this in remembrance of me.” To

a lot of us partake of
the symbols of Christ’s his was

mere recipients of God’s

grace. But there is Son of God,
more. We have entered
into a new relationship. suffering real

didn’t have before, a pain, and
brother that we never
had, and we have all
real death, in
the obligations of
family. Why? Because
our place.
we have partaken of this cup of
the new covenant in his blood. A
covenant isn’t a one-way street. It isn’t
just something handed down. It is
something we enter into voluntarily.
The entry into the new covenant
is not a passive event for us. We
partake of Christ’s body and blood,
having examined ourselves, and
we go away from the Passover to
walk in a different way as brothers
of Jesus Christ. The disciples knew
what a covenant meant and that there
were obligations that came with it.
Somehow that truth gets away from
us. Let’s take a moment to fall back
into reality, away from arguments
and into Christ.
After all the events of this Last
Supper, Jesus then sat and talked
with his disciples for a while. He
said, “A new commandment I give to
you, That you love one another; as I
have loved you, that you also love one
another. By this shall all men know
that you are my disciples, if you have
love one to another.” Remember I
said that if you enter into a covenant
you take on certain obligations?
What follows here in John 14:14 are
the obligations: “if you shall ask any
thing in my name, I will do it. If you
love me, keep my commandments.”
Did you catch this? Notice the two-
directional aspect of it: if you ask
anything, I’ll do it. But here’s what
comes behind it: If I ask anything,
you’ve got to do it. The disciples
would not understand how real this
was for a few hours yet.
You know, if you had been able
to embrace Jesus—to put your arms
around him, to give him a hug—your
arms would have been around a real
man. Your hands would have been on
the back that was given to the smiters;
the whiskers that
brushed your cheek
would have been those
that others would later
that night pluck out.
And the real Jesus
would cry out from
the cross, “My God,
my God, why have you
forsaken me?” Why?
Why did that have to
happen? He had to be
tempted in all points
like we are [Heb. 4:15],
and which of us has not felt at times
like God has gone away completely?
The blood that gushed out when the
soldier pierced his side was real.
The disciples had three days to deal
with that, then an even greater reality
descended on them: they came face
to face with the risen Christ. They
touched him. Thomas, who had not
been there at the time, didn’t even
believe it. It was unreal to him. The
next time Jesus appeared, he said,
“Thomas, come here, put your finger
in this wound in my hand. Stick your
hand in my side. It’s real.” He was
alive, he was real. And then they all
stood there and watched him ascend
into heaven. As unreal as that may
have seemed to all of them, it was real
enough. And know this: there was not
a web of arguments about the Lord’s
Supper or the Passover, nor about
“three days and three nights”. This
was the real Son of God, suffering real
pain, and real death…in our place. It
is far past time for us to learn to stand
in awe of the reality of Christ himself,
not of our arguments about Christ.
Now, don’t get me wrong. I believe
what I say, I believe what I teach; but
I have come to see that what I teach
is not “real”. It is a web of arguments
that may be true enough, but they are
only a shadow of the body of Christ.
I’ll continue to argue for what is right,
but I hope I will increasingly fall back
from the web of my own arguments
into Christ himself.

Why Wash Feet?

The awkwardness I felt was
palatable, and if I was able to make
eye contact with my dad I bet I
would have seen he was just as
uncomfortable as I was. I had never
washed my father’s feet before. Little
did I know, this would not only be
the first and the last time I washed my
father’s feet, but the last time I would
observe Passover with my father. But
the uneasiness subsided with each
handful of water I poured onto his
feet, and by the time I was patting him
dry, I felt a genuine sense of agape. As
I helped him up, we just looked at
each other. Without a sound, we both
processed the torrent of emotions
that churned inside of us. Words
would have only cheapened it, and
there was nothing to really say. The
humility felt was plain—which is rare
in my experience. Usually, humility
is accompanied by either guilt or
shame as one is forced into the stark
realization of their inadequacies,
but there is something special about
the foot-washing rite that imparts
meekness gently.
This elegant act that epitomizes
service to one another is a powerful
lesson in humility. It says that Jesus
conducted this foot washing as an
example for us (see John 13:15). And
by reading the whole encounter, you
see that Jesus is taking some time
to properly orient us. Poor Peter
demonstrates most of our reactions
to someone more esteemed than us
serving us. We don’t like it. It doesn’t
make sense to us and, moreover, by
the world’s standards, the least of us
should be serving—not being served.
This role reversal is exactly what Jesus
was drawing light to.

It’s noteworthy that John starts
this chapter establishing Jesus’
sovereignty and favor with the
Father before the foot washing—
making it clear that, by the world’s
standards, someone else should
be washing his feet. Also worth
noting, John brings up that Jesus’
death was on his mind. I take this
to mean we should not let our
misfortune (or our fortune) get in
the way of serving our fellow man.
To fully understand the profound
meaning to be derived from this
encounter, it would be wise for
us to consider what foot washing
would have meant to a first-
century follower of Christ. Foot
washing was a part of everyday life
for these folks. The Encyclopedia
Britannica states, “The practice
of foot washing was originally an
act of hospitality in Palestinian
homes, performed for guests (who
wore sandals and walked on dusty
roads) by a servant or the wife
of the host.” Foot washing was
often the chore of female slaves
and was considered lowly work.
Now we see why Peter reacted so
incredulously. He couldn’t bear
to see the Messiah reduced to the
work of the lowliest among them,
but that was exactly His point.
He tells them if they can
understand these things that they
will be happy. The word “happy” in
this verse (John 13:17) is the Greek
word makarioi, and it is translated
most often as “blessed”. Jesus is
telling us that those who live a life
of service will be blessed.
So where do we start? Galatians
6:1 says, “As we have therefore
opportunity, let us do good unto
all men, especially unto them who
are of the household of faith.” Paul
tells us to start with the household
of faith, and that also includes
our own homes and families.
Think of ways you can serve in
your own home such as helping
with household chores, creating a
peaceful environment with words
of encouragement and praise,
and teaching your children how
to serve through family service
projects. It doesn’t have to be on
a special occasion like someone’s
birthday, anniversary, or holiday;
but in fact, it’s better to do it on a
plain old garden-variety day. Bring
home some flowers to your wife
one day just because. That young
man delivering your pizza who
you really don’t know? Tip him
an extra $20 for no reason at all. It
can even be something as simple
as offering to take someone’s plate
after they’re done eating.
What about serving your church
first and foremost with a positive
attitude and an encouraging
word—things sorely missing in
many lives? Make certain all church
members are greeted, at potlucks
and such sit with the lonely ones.
Are you sharing your talents
with the brethren? Don’t gossip
about other members of your
congregation or tell stories about
other churches. Do you know of a
church member who needs food
or clothing or ________________
(fill in the blank)?
Serve others just as Christ told us
to in Matthew 25:36–42. Feed them,
clothe them, visit them, encourage
them, random acts of kindness.
You should be doing these things
to your neighbors, friends, co-
workers, and enemies. Do good to
all through prayer. Listen to people,
know their needs. We should make
it a goal of ours to do at least one
thing for someone else every day.
Once I was visiting a client who
had just lost her son to suicide. She
was a true inspiration as she was
speaking to young people in high
school about the tell-tale signs
someone might be at risk. Anyway,
we were at her kitchen table as she
commented on her windows being
so dirty. That weekend, when I
knew she was going to be away, I
took my ladder and cleaned all of
her windows, and simply left an
unsigned note that said, “I hope
these clean windows brighten
your day.” The next week when we
met back together, she told me of
the good deed with tears coming
down her cheeks. She commented,
“I guess there still is some good in
the world”.
If I had not listened, not only
would she not have been blessed,
but I would have missed out on
sowing a seed for God to bless me.
Moreover, there was a tremendous
joy I felt in my heart as she said
those words. I believe this is the
type of blessing Jesus was alluding
to—a wholesome joy that echoes
the sentiment, “I guess there still is
some good in this world”.
Be on the lookout for how you can
thoughtfully help. Buy that person
behind you their cup of coffee. Stay
late to help that coworker finish
their project. Simply compliment
someone on how they look. That
doesn’t cost anything and means
the world to people. Don’t miss
opportunities to be good to people.
Make service a priority in your
life and watch God rain blessings
upon you and yours. If there is one
takeaway from the foot-washing
example it’s this: stay busy washing
feet. Be an answered prayer or a
blessing to others. To do that, you
have to be sensitive to the needs of
those in your sphere of influence.
Listen intently for what people
aren’t saying.
May this year’s foot-washing
service remind you that you are
called to serve—your family, your
brethren, your neighbor, and the
stranger God puts in your path.

The Days of Unleavened Bread
1. What is after the Passover in the series of annual holy days God gave to his
chosen people (Leviticus 23:1–8)?
2. Were the sacrifices here mentioned a part of the original instructions for
the Days of Unleavened Bread (Jeremiah 7:22–23)?
3. How long were the children of Israel commanded to eat unleavened bread
(Exodus 12:15)?
4. Was it necessary to abstain from ordinary work on any of these days
(Exodus 12:16)?
Note: The first and last days of Unleavened Bread were [annual] Sabbath
days—days in which no ordinary work was done and days of solemn assembly
for worship (“holy convocations”).
5. Why was their bread unleavened when they were liberated from Egypt
(Exodus 12:39)?
6. What was the original meaning of the Days of Unleavened Bread
(Exodus 13:8–10)?
7. What were the Israelites to remember when they observed these days
(Deuteronomy 16:3)?

Note: Later, in Romans 7:14, Paul speaks of being “sold” under sin. This is a
metaphor drawn from the practice of selling slaves in the marketplace. Just as
Israel was in bondage in Egypt, so man is in bondage to sin.
11. Is there any similarity in the meaning of the Days of Unleavened Bread
to an Israelite and the meaning to a Christian (1 Corinthians 5:6–7)? How
are Christians delivered from their past sins (v. 7 with Romans 5:1–8)? What
about future sins (vv. 8–10)?
Note: Leavening, for seven days,
becomes a type, a metaphor, of sin.
Just as a search is made initially to
clear leavening out of a home, so a
Christian must put sin out of his life.
Just as no leavening is to be eaten
for seven days (seven is the number
of completion or perfection), so the
Christian is not to go back into sin
(or receive sin back into his life)
till his course is finished (Romans
6:1–7). The eating of unleavened
bread symbolizes taking the sinless
Jesus into ourselves—the unleavened
bread of sincerity and truth.

Update on Our Brothers & Sisters

2022 is proving as challenging and difficult for our Sabbatarian brethren in
Southeast India (Andhra Pradesh state) as it was in 2021—but the work of
providing for the congregations, preaching the Gospel and preparing the
children for a future continues.
At Hebron Orphanage in Pallakollu Town, Director Sagar Jalli proudly
announced the First Class for nursing students. This is a plan he has been
working on for the better part of 10 years to provide the low castes and
orphans who graduated Hebron with a career. Sagar says, “We are having
the nursing school with 31 children. They will get good jobs after finishing
the 2-year course.”
At Rajupalem and Rajaropeta, the Gampala family and their 4 congregations
were finally permitted to meet together and preach after 3 sets of covid
lockdowns.
Chitti Gampala writes: “I am glad to inform you that we had a street Gospel
Meeting at Rajupalem where our Brother Michael Deering had preached
there in 2012 and 2015. People are responding to the Truth we preach
positively.”
The increasing hostility from the Hindu majority continues to plague our
brethren, but despite the persecution, they count it all joy to be an instrument of
Yahweh Elohim—the beacons of light in a very dark and pagan land.
