Procedure
1 The approved fuel is supplied
to the fuel cells (Figure 1) through the filler
port located on the right side of the
helicopter. When 193.1 pounds
of fuel accumulates in the main fuel cell, the fuel starts to gravity
transfer
through a gravity tube and fills the forward fuel cell. This
gravity tube connects to a fitting installed on the
lower forward
face of the main fuel cell. It then connects to a tube that goes along
the top of the floor
structure to the forward fuel cell where it starts
to fill the forward fuel cell. When the forward fuel cell fills to
the level of the standpipe, the main fuel cell continues to fill.
The head of fuel in the main fuel cell then causes
the forward fuel
cell to fill to a total quantity of 37.6 U.S. gallons (256.0 pounds)
(full). If the auxiliary fuel cell is
installed, it fills at the same
rate as the main fuel cell through two openings installed on the lower
aft wall of
the main fuel cell and the bottom of the auxiliary fuel
cell.

2 The normal operation of the fuel

system starts when the battery switch is set to the ON position or
when 28
VDC external power is connected to the helicopter.

3 The sample fuel is drained from

the forward and main fuel cells to identify any water or contamination
that
may be present. The sump drain circuit is only active when the
fuel valve is in the OFF position. The two sump
drain pushbuttons,
installed on the lower aft right fuselage, are pushed one at a time
to open the respective
sump drain solenoids. The solenoids are installed
on the fuel pump attachment plates in the forward and main
fuel cells.

4 For SN: 54300-Subsequent The fuel quantity is indicated on the fuel quantity gauge or
the Engine
Indicating System (EIS). The fuel quantity
indicates the total fuel in both the forward and main fuel cells.
When
the auxiliary fuel cell kit is installed, the fuel quantity indication
shows the total fuel quantity in the three fuel
cells. The forward
fuel cell quantity is indicated when the forward fuel cell pushbutton
indication is pushed in.

5 If the battery switch is set to

the OFF position during flight, the DC power supply from the battery
to the left
fuel transfer and the left fuel boost pump is fed through
the fuel valve switch (when in the ON position) and
through the battery
switch (DMC-407-A-28-20-00-03A-042A-A). If the helicopter is parked with the
battery
switch set to the OFF position, the fuel valve switch set
to the ON position, and the left FUEL BOOST/XFER
switch set to the
ON position, the left boost /transfer pumps will operate.

6 The fuel boost/transfer pump system

is made up of two pump assemblies. One is installed on the base of
the
forward fuel cell (transfer pump). The second one is installed
on the base of the main fuel cell (boost pump).
The pump assemblies
are made up of four identical, interchangeable, canister type pumps.
The left transfer
pump and the left boost pump are turned on together
when the FUEL BOOST/XFR LEFT switch is set to the
LEFT position. The
right transfer pump and right boost pump are turned on together when
the FUEL
BOOST/XFR RIGHT switch is set to the RIGHT position.

7 The fuel from the forward fuel

cell is transferred to the main fuel cell by two transfer pumps installed
on a
sump plate assembly located in the base of the forward fuel cell.
The fuel is pumped through a fuel hose to a
fitting at the lower centerline
of the forward fuel cell. A flex hose carries the fuel under pressure
along the top
of the floor structure to a fitting on the main fuel
cell, where the fuel enters through a fitting and a transfer
tube
and spills into the main fuel cell.

8 The fuel from the main fuel cell

is supplied to the engine through two boost pumps located at the base
of the
main fuel cell on the sump plate. Similar to the forward fuel
cell, fuel flows through the check valves to a
common tee fitting,
then through a hose to a fitting located on the top right of the main
fuel cell. The fuel
leaves the main fuel cell and connects to the
fuel shutoff valve, located adjacent to the hat rack. The pressure
transducer, installed between the main fuel cell fitting and the fuel
shutoff valve, supplies the electrical signal
to the pressure gauge,
installed on the instrument panel.

9 For SN: 53000-54303 or 54305-54566 or 54568-54800 When the fuel goes through the fuel shutoff
valve, a fuel hose
routed through the airframe structure supplies fuel through a fitting
to the airframe fuel
filter, installed on the right side of the forward
engine firewall. When the fuel goes through the airframe fuel
filter,
the fuel is supplied by a fuel hose to the engine driven pump.

10 For SN: 54304 or 54567 or 54805-Subsequent When the fuel goes through the fuel shutoff valve, a fuel
hose
routed through the airframe structure supplies fuel through a fitting
to the Fuel Pump Power Unit (FPPU)
to the engine
driven pump installed on the right side of the engine.

11 During normal operation, the fuel

empties from the main fuel cell through the boost pumps to a level
where
the gravity transfer standpipe opening in the main fuel cell
will no longer be transferring fuel to the forward
fuel cell. At this
point, fuel pumped by the transfer pumps into the aft tank will remain
until burnt by the engine.
Since the fuel level is below the standpipe
opening, it will not feed by gravity back into the forward tank. When
the fuel level in the forward tank is reduced, the low level will
be detected by the forward fuel quantity probe
and the low level detector
and sent to the fuel signal conditioner.

12 For SN: 54300-Subsequent When the forward fuel cell is nearing depletion, the signal
conditioner uses
time delays to control the transfer pumps and annunciators/CAS
messages. The time delay allows continued
operation of the transfer
pumps to ensure all of the fuel in the forward cell is transferred
to the main fuel tank.
The forward fuel cell will be empty when approximately
193.1 pounds of total fuel is indicated.

13 For SN: 53000-53174 or 53175-Subsequent Due to differing operation of the left and right fuel transfer
circuits on helicopters, refer to DMC-407-A-28-40-00-01A-042A-A, DMC-407-A-28-40-00-02A-042A-A, or
DMC-407-A-96-11-12-00A-130A-A and DMC-407-A-96-11-12-00A-130B-A for specific information.

14 As the fuel level continues to

drop, the main fuel cell fuel quantity indicating system gives an
accurate fuel
level signal to the fuel quantity indication circuit
through the aft fuel quantity probe and the mid level fuel
quantity
probe in the main fuel cell (DMC-407-A-95-62-03-00A-042A-A). The
FUEL LOW annunciator comes
on when 100 ±10 pounds of fuel is
left in the main fuel cell.
