Importance of Self-assessment

Design self-assessment carefully, and ensure that you integrate its use into the assessment plan.
This way you optimise the benefits to learning, appropriately engage students in the process by
giving them clear directions and explanations, and ensure that contingency plans are in place for
if issues arise. Combining student self and peer assessment with tutor assessment makes for a
more reliable grade (Dancer & Kamvounias, 2005) Some assessment methods only measure
students' ability to regurgitate knowledge, not how well they understand the topic. Self-
assessment can provide insight into students' true comprehension and can help to identify gaps in
students' knowledge. Student self-assessment occurs when learners (students) assess their own
performance and is primarily used to help students develop specific learning skills that they will
need for professional competence. This process may assist in making students more aware of and
more responsible for their own learning process. A system of well-constructed formative and
summative assessments allows students to demonstrate their abilities and knowledge and then
reflects how close they are to meeting educational goals and standards. Evidence from
assessments can be directly beneficial to students. Self-reflection heightens an awareness of
one’s most effective learning strategies, as well as pointing out areas where an individual student
might devote more time and attention. … Students can also write about what might be done on
the next similar assignment and apply that toward even better results.
