To Whom It May Concern:

I am writing this reference on behalf of Beau Askins, who is applying for transition to practice at
your organization. I have known Beau for four months in my capacity as adjunct faculty at the
University of Arizona, BSN-IH Program. Beau was in my clinical group for Medical/Surgical Nursing
during the summer semester and in my Complex Care clinical group this fall. I have also had the
pleasure of having Beau in a Complex Care lab this semester where he displayed his eagerness to
learn and his high academic standards.

Over that time, I was consistently impressed with Beau’s ability to grasp concepts quickly and
analyze information in both laboratory and clinical settings. He has several strengths to offer during
the transition to practice clinical experience. Beau comes early and prepared for lab and clinical
experience with all pre work completed in a thoughtful manner. He is actively engaged in
participating in all settings. I have seen Beau hone his critical thinking skills by connecting
concepts from the classroom and lab to real life clinical scenarios. He engages his classmates in
thoughtful conversations during post conference and asks well thought through questions of his
instructors and the nurses he followed. While in clinicals, Beau successfully started IVs, inserted
indwelling catheters and safely passed medications including IV pushes and primary and
secondary IV medications. Beau was particularly intrigued by a rapid response that turned into a
transfer to a higher level of care and intubation. Beau’s actions and questions surrounding this
rapid response demonstrated his developing critical thinking skills. Beau is always interested in
helping others. For example, he was always available to assist the nursing team during clinicals by
answering call lights, repositioning patients, and collaborating with the clinicians to attend to
immediate patient needs. Beau assisted a physician when removing a chest tube. He made
meaningful connections with his patients. During our Complex Care clinicals, I received many
compliments for Beau’s professionalism and helpful attitude. Beau enjoys participating in a team-
oriented environment that is face paced. He would fit well into a critical care environment.

In addition, Beau is a very compassionate person and demonstrates great respect for everyone
around him including patients, peers, faculty, and healthcare team. Beau has a true passion for his
patients and for nursing. This is evident through his patient care, attention to detail and
professional practice. He has clinical experience in acute care and post-acute facilities, where he
also developed exceptional communication skills.

In conclusion, I would highly recommend Beau Askins for the clinical preceptorship. Beau will be
an extremely positive addition to your organization. If you need any additional information, feel free
to contact me via telephone or email.

Sincerely,
Rachel Vogel BSN, RN
