Experiment 1; Reaction time to emotional and neutral words.

Abstract
This is a psychological experiment where the subject will be given 30 words 15 neutral and 15
emotional. The subject will be asked to come up with a response and the response time will be
recorded. The result will be confidential and will only use for experimental education. The
independent variable is the factor that you purposely change or control in order to see what effect
it has. The variable that respond to the change in the independent variable that is dependent
variable. In this experiment my friend was my subject. The reaction time of the participant was
measured by the experiment.

INTRODUCTION

Sensation is the process that allows our brains to take in information via our five senses, which
can then be experienced and interpreted by the brain. Sensation occurs thanks to our five sensory
systems: vision, hearing, taste, smell and touch.
Perception is the process of recognizing and interpreting sensory stimuli. Perception can be
defined as our recognition and interpretation of sensory information. Perception also includes
how we respond to the information. We can think of perception as a process where we take in
sensory information from our environment and use that information in order to interact with our
environment. Perception allows us to take the sensory information in and make it into something
meaningful.
Reaction time is the amount of time it takes to respond to a stimulus. An example of reaction
time is when a bug stings within 1 second of being approached.

Literature review

Most studies to date have measured information processing biases in anxiety using behavioural
indicators that typically compare differences in reaction times (RTs) for emotional versus neutral
stimuli to create bias scores (e.g., threat versus neutral words or pictures; Hadwin & Field, 2010).
For example, a dot-probe task is used to measure selective attention or vigilance for threat in
anxiety. This task requires participants to identify a probe (e.g., the location or number of dots)
that follows one of two stimuli presented simultaneously (i.e., threat–neutral, positive–neutral or
neutral–neutral stimulus pairs; MacLeod, Mathews, & Tata, 1986). Shorter RTs for probes
following threat stimuli relative to probes replacing neutral stimuli in threat–neutral pairs
indicate an attentional bias towards threat (threat vigilance). The reverse pattern of relative probe
RTs indicates an attentional bias away from threat (threat avoidance). Several studies have found
evidence to suggest anxiety-related selective attention to threat using this paradigm in children
and adolescents (Roy et al., 2008, Telzer et al., 2008, Waters et al., 2008), although others find
that childhood anxiety is associated with avoidance of threat (Brown et al., 2013, Stirling et al.,
2006) and yet others find no associations with anxiety (Waters, Lipp, & Spence, 2004).
Selective attention to threat can also be assessed using tasks designed to measure inhibitory
control, such as emotional variants of Stroop and Garner tasks (Gilboa-Schechtman, Ben-Artzi,
Jeczemien, Maro, & Hermesh, 2004). In emotional Stroop tasks, participants are asked to
identify the colour of a stimulus (e.g., a word or picture outline), while ignoring its emotional
meaning. Similarly, the Garner task requires individuals to identify certain non-emotional stimuli
properties (i.e., gender) whilst ignoring emotionally valenced stimulus properties (e.g., facial
expression). In both versions of this paradigm, an attentional bias for threat is inferred when
latencies to process non-emotional stimulus dimensions are longer for threatening than neutral
stimuli. Some studies assessing inhibitory control have found increased interference of angry
faces on colour matching in children with elevated anxiety (Hadwin et al., 2009, Klein et al.,
2011b, Morren et al., 2003, Richards et al., 2007).

Emotional word; The words that relating to the person emotion This the word that is used to
evoke emotion.
Neutral word; If someone uses neutral language, they choose words which do not indicate that
they approve or disapprove of something. Both sides had agreed to use neutral terms in their
references to each other.
Reaction time; Reaction time is use to measure the amount of time that detects for an individual
to process certain information. It is the duration of the internal between the presentation aguest
stimulus the participant response to that particular stimulus.

The different method of measuring reaction time-

 Speed of response; speed of response. The time required for a system to react to some
signal; for example, the delay time for a photon detector to react to a radiation pulse, or
the time needed for a current or voltage in a circuit to reach a definite fraction of its final
value as a result of an abrupt change in the electromotive force.
 Duration of response; Duration of response is the time from response (R) to
progression/death (P/D). The existing statistical procedures for DOR are valid when
certain model assumptions are correctly specified.
 Latency of response; Response Latency is the time span between a stimulus and
a response or reaction. It is often used in psychology, especially in experiments in
cognitive or social psychology.
 Aptitude of response; Definition of aptitude: Acquired or natural ability (usually
measurable with aptitude tests), for learning and proficiency in a specific area or
discipline.

The factor that affect reaction time-

Arrousel; Arousal is the physiological and psychological state of being awoken or of sense
organs stimulated to a point of perception.
Relevance; Relevance is how appropriate something is to what's being done or said at a given
time.
Age; the length of time someone has been alive or something has existed.
Vision; It is the future state. It defines where someone want to see yourselves. And what process
they follow to reached this position.
Practice of error; Error checking tests assess a candidate's ability to identify errors in data sets
and assess the correctness of information. They are also known as Data checking tests.
Candidates are required to complete error checking tests under timed test conditions.
Gender; gender impact on the reaction time because then male and female perception is different.
For man one thing can be beautiful but for women same thing can be neutral word.
Brain injury; All the response basically comes from the brain of the subject. So, if any damage
occur in the subject brain it can hamper the reaction time result.

Purpose of the experiment

Purpose of the particular experiment was to see the relationship, difference or affect of the word
nature on the time of reaction of the participant.

Variable
Independent variable; That the experiment manipulating. The word emotional, neutral is the
independent variable.
Dependent variable; reaction time of this experiment is dependent variable.

The hypothesis was that the reaction time to the neutral world will be shorter than that of
reaction time of the emotional word. So when I compare my hypothesis with the average time
than I found that my hypothesis is

Methodology
 Design; A single independent subject design wasv use in this experiment.
 Participant one male of 24 years old. He is a current student of north south university. He
is belonging to a middle class family.
 Materials; the following instruction that use; 1.The list of 30 words.
2. stopwatch/smartphone.
3. Paper, pen, pencil, eraser.

Procedure

At first subject attend to the experiment than give him to the form where he sign his
name. After that call out to the 30 word one by one and he gave his response. His each
repose was record to the reaction time. At the end of the experiment take his opinion that
how he felt.

Result

Tbale1; Reaction time to emotional and neutral words.

Conclusion
My goal of this experiment is to measure the reaction time of an individual so that I can
understand the psychological factor of human. From the experiment I gat that the reaction time
of an individual for neutral word is shorter than the emotional word.
