Specifications Worthy of Note

YARN
Kelbourne Woolens Germantown (100% N. American
Wool; 220 yds/100 gm skein): oxford blue 419, 1 skein.
GAUGE
1 Cable Repeat (40 sts) = 5.5” (14 cm) on larger ndls, after
blocking.
28 rnds = 4” (10 cm) in cable patt on larger ndls, after
blocking.
NEEDLES
1 – 16” (40 cm) US 5 (3.75 mm) circular.
1 – 16” (40 cm) US 7 (4.5 mm) circular.
1 – set US 7 (4.5 mm) DPNs.
Check your gauge and adjust needle size(s) accordingly if necessary.
NOTIONS
Darning needle, stitch marker, Kelbourne Woolens label,
sewing thread, sharp sewing needle, waste yarn, crochet
hook for provisional cast on.
SIZE
18” (46 cm), brim circumference, unstretched.
9.5” (24 cm) height, brim folded in half.
SKILLS
Tubular cast-on, working cables from charts, decreasing.
The October Hat is worked in the round from the bottom
up. The hat begins with a provisional cast on, and then a
deep knit 2, purl 2 ribbing is worked. An intricate, modern
cable panel pattern is worked for the body of the hat and
integrated decreases shape the crown.
If you would prefer not to work the tubular cast on, work
the cast on as follows, then move ahead to “Brim”:
Using smaller ndls and long tail cast on, CO 120 sts. Join
for working in the rnd, being careful not to twist sts. PM
indicating beg of rnd.
Abbrevations
C2/2L: Slip 2 sts to cn, hold front, k2; k2 from cn.
C2/2R: Slip 2 sts to cn, hold back, k2; k2 from cn.

Directions
CAST ON:
Using waste yarn, crochet hook, and smaller ndl,
provisionally CO 61 sts. Do not join. Switch to working
yarn.
Row 1 (RS): *K1, yo, rep from * to 1 st rem, k1 – 121 sts.
Row 2 (WS): *Sl1wyif, k1; rep from * to 1 st rem, sl1wyif.
Row 3: *K1, sl1wyif; rep from * to 1 st rem, k1.
Row 4: *Sl1wyif, k1; rep from * to 1 st rem, sl1wyif.
Rearrange Stitches for K2, P2 Ribbing:
Row 5: *K1, sl1 to cn, hold back, k1, p1 from cn, p1; rep
from * to 1 st rem, sl1wyif.
Join for working in the rnd, being careful not to twist sts.
Next Rnd (Dec): Sl 1 st from RH to LH ndl, k2tog, k1, p2,
*k2, p2; rep from * around, pm indicating beg of rnd – 120
sts.
BRIM:
Work in K2, P2 Ribbing until piece meas 5” (12.5 cm)
from CO edge.
BODY:
Change to larger needles.
Begin Working From Charts:
Work Rnds 1–18 of Cable Chart once, then rep Rnds
11–18 three times more.
Piece should meas appx. 11” (28 cm) from CO edge.

Decrease For Crown:
Rnd 1: *Ssk, k4, p2, k4, k2tog, p2, ssk, k6, ssk, p2, k2tog,
k6, k2tog, p2; rep from *around – 102 sts.
Rnd 2: *Ssk, k3, p2, k3, k2tog, p2, ssk, k4, ssk, p2, k2tog,
k4, k2tog, p2; rep from * around – 84 sts.
Rnd 3: *Ssk, k2, p2, k2, k2tog, p2, ssk, k2, ssk, p2, k2tog,
k2, k2tog, p2; rep from * around – 66 sts.
Rnd 4: *Ssk, k1, p2, k1, k2tog, p2, ssk, ssk, p2, k2tog, k2tog,
p2; rep from * around – 48 sts.
Rnd 5: *K2, p2tog; rep from * around – 36 sts.
Rnd 6: *K1, ssk; rep from * around – 24 sts.
Rnd 7: *K2tog; rep from * around – 12 sts.
Finishing:
Break yarn, leaving 8” (20) cm tail. Using tapestry needle,
weave tail through remaining sts and pull closed.
Remove waste yarn. Weave in any remaining ends.
Soak in cool water and wool wash and block to
measurements.
Pom Pom:
Make a 3” (7.5 cm) diameter pompom using MC. Secure
pom pom to hat and tie off inside.
Label:
Using sewing thread and a sharp sewing needle sew-on
Kelbourne Woolens label to brim as shown.
