What are the Effects of Narcotics in Indonesia?

Narcotics are substances or drugs that are natural, synthetic, or semi-synthetic, which cause the effect
of decreasing consciousness, hallucinations, and stimulation. Based on data from the BNN, the number
of drug users continues to increase. From 4,022,228 people in 2014 to 4,098,029 people in 2015, an
increase of 0.02 percent. Until July 2017, the number continued to increase to reach 5 million people,
with 1.2 million of them domiciled in DKI Jakarta. The number that continues to increase is an indication
of inadequate handling so that the war on drugs that has been promoted so far needs further
evaluation. There are so many teenagers who are active drug users. Some of them volunteered to try
drugs because they believed that drugs were the key to their happiness. This is unfortunate because
even though they believe that using drugs brings happiness to their lives and helps them forget all the
problems in their lives, drugs are actually a ticket to our own destruction.

The increase in the graph above is also influenced by drug trafficking and consumer demand. Drug
trafficking is a large market with a valuation of tens of trillions of rupiah. Like any market, the price
movements of drug goods also follow the law of supply and demand. However, because drugs are sold
illegally, information on the real quality and quantity of goods on the market is not readily available, or
at least difficult to access. Neither consumers nor producers know anything about market prices or
prices set by their competitors. Therefore, the dynamics of prices are quite difficult to trace and the
price of an item is identified by a price range per unit unit, not a single price (Caulkins and Reuter, 1998).

The greater the risk and effort required to supply goods, the higher the price set by producers which
causes the supply line to shift to the left, or what is called an enforcement tax. In the market for illegal
goods, normal profit is often referred to as expected profit because of the high risk borne by the
producer so that the achievement of this profit is uncertain (Reuter and Kleiman, 1986).

From a demand perspective, although drugs are addictive and illegal, several studies have shown that
their demand behavior follows the laws of economic supply and demand. When prices go up, drug users
decrease, even for the acute addict. In addition, another aspect that needs to be considered is related to
the elasticity of market demand.
Drugs also have a bad impact on the health of users. First, the drug causes a hormonal imbalance in the
user's body. One example is the effect of cocaine on dopamine levels in the human brain. When a
person uses cocaine, their brain is flooded with dopamine. This chemical process makes them feel happy
without any reason. This is the reason why when someone has tried a drug once, they will have a
tendency to use it again at a later date because they want to experience the sensation again. The more
often a person uses this drug, the stronger the brain will record this condition as normal dopamine
levels in the brain. This condition can lead to several serious diseases such as Schizophrenia and
Parkinson's, because both diseases are related to dopamine levels in the brain. When the brain is
flooded with dopamine, a person will experience schizophrenia but when the brain is deficient in
dopamine, that person will develop Parkinson's.

Second, drugs have the opportunity to lead users to commit serious crimes such as robbery and theft.
The chemical elements in a drug have their own way of causing addiction to the user's body. This means
that once someone tries drugs, they start asking again. The problem arises when they don't have
enough money to buy additional supplies. They couldn't just sit there doing nothing, because their
bodies wanted the medicine, so even though their minds were telling them to stop, the desire to put
this harmful substance into their bodies was unbearable. The only way to overcome this is to find
shortcuts to get money, such as stealing, robbing or even becoming a prostitute, so that they can buy
the drug.

Third, it is impossible to return to a hundred percent version of ourselves after you use drugs. There are
so many destructive compounds used in a drug. Once we use it, the drug will start to damage our body
from the inside. Even though we decided to stop.
