SITE STUDY Updated
//In red are the remarks that I said while presenting and that weren’t included in the slides
Site context
• It is located on the outskirts of phulwari shariff
• Located in the ganga Yamuna basin (or gangetic plains)
• Rivers : ganges, punpun river (tributary)
• Area : 25,185 m. sq.
• Site coordinates : 25° 33' 46.71'' , 85° 4' 7.09''
• Connection via secondary roads
• Soil type : alluvial soil, located in northern india, so fertile soil
Components of alluvial soil : heavy clay, loam, very light soil, alkaline

Wind pattern changes for different months, for the months jan to march, the wind is
mostly from west on the site. From April to October , the winds are predominantly from
east. For November and December, the direction of predominant winds switches to west
again. There are calm winds on the site , so no major elements that need to be
specifically added on the site just to prevent or enhance the flow of wind
Cumulative chart for all the months that show wind direction and flow
• No significant structures exist near the site that can block the flow of
wind from entering the site
• A cluster of small single- double storey structures exist near the site.
Their impact on the wind wont be as strong .
• A waterbody exist on the south west side of the site; can cool down the
wind till some extent

X axis represents the months from January to December and y axis shows the time from
12am to 12pm

From the charts we can see an average range of temperature ranging from 15 c to 32 c from
January to December. This range helps us to decide on the materials that we will use for
building our school. Rules out the possible use of metals that conduct heat.
The data collected is not according to the Indian metric system, that is because it is
collected from Iowa state university (United States of America), which has maintained a
monthly log for all climatic temperatures for all the cities of the world. The data include
highest temperature, lowest temperature, combined avg temp, wind data, precipitation,
and humidity
PRECIPITATION
MICROCLIMATE
• No major effect on the micro climate; more or less similar to the climatic
character depicted by data
• Due to less crowding on the outskirts, no heat is trapped around the area. Heat
gain by different materials due to surroundings remains minimal
• Surrounded by empty fields, tiny water bodies, and other natural features, the
climatic temperature might be less as compared to what was predicted
TRAFFIC
Width of the main road (w) : 4.06m
Width of the side road (s): 2.52 m
Hp gas godown is nearby which has a flow of trucks to and fro. This might create a problem for
the buses as the roads aren’t wide enough for two way traffic.
• Entry and exit points shall only be limited to the sides from where people and
vehicles can enter
• West side road might be impacted by the school entry and exit points
// entry and exit cannot happen from south side road as it is prohibited by the brief
WATER FALLING ON THE SITE
Due to the presence of too many green spaces, the water that falls on the site gets
absorbed. Patna doesn’t get too much rainfall.
The brown hatch areas represent potential water clogging points on the site.
DRAINAGE:
(est.) around 8km of drainage system, 60 % pucca drains, not fully developed, so
major cause of water logging at the time of heavy rains
From this observation we realise that the site will have independent waste collection system to
cater the needs of the school by various means like that of septic tanks
• SI hospital : 800m
• KB hospital : 2.3 km
• Mahavir cancer sanstha : 4.7 km
• ESIC model hospital : 3.5km
Proximity to the hospitals tells us if the requirement of an ambulance on the site is important
or not

ARCHITECTURAL CHARACTER
From the vision case studies that I did (gurukul and akhara), I tried to understand how the
community/ies come(s) together to bring out the essemce of the space, so from that I
understood that the school shouldn’t seem as an alien building according to context; it should
blend in. Yet, it should be an entity with the potential of becoming a landmark. The
surrounding area should be identified by that building. It should seem within the reach of the
people and it should work towards building the community and attracting the people towards
it.
Wouldn’t want to give too many colours, but make it a space with various architecture
elements so that the space becomes a play area for the children.
I want connection to different structures via open corridors and courtyards so that the concept
of indoor and outdoor education doesn’t seem as different things altogether.
