• Access from isopur road

CLIMATE OF PATNA (composite)

Wind data

1.

2.
Wind pattern changes for different months, for the months jan to march, the wind is
mostly from west on the site. From April to October , the winds are predominantly from
east. For November and December, the direction of predominant winds switches to west
again. There are calm winds on the site , so no major elements that need to be
specifically added on the site just to prevent or enhance the flow of wind
Cumulative chart for all the months that show wind direction and flow

Wind data for the site:

• No significant structures exist near the site that can block the flow of
wind from entering the site
• A cluster of small single- double storey structures exist near the site.
Their impact on the wind wont be as strong .
• A waterbody exist on the south west side of the site; can cool down the
wind till some extent
Sun data:

X axis represents the months from January to December and y axis shows the time from
12am to 12pm
The image has been updated as the previous image was of the southern hemisphere

Impact of sun on the site :

• Negligible effect of the surrounding on the sun data

• Big trees exist on the southern side that too in one corner; can be used to
provide shade

From the charts we can see an average range of temperature ranging from 15 c to 32 c from
January to December. This range helps us to decide on the materials that we will use for
building our school. Rules out the possible use of metals that conduct heat.

The data collected is not according to the Indian metric system, that is because it is
collected from Iowa state university (United States of America), which has maintained a
monthly log for all climatic temperatures for all the cities of the world. The data include
highest temperature, lowest temperature, combined avg temp, wind data, precipitation,
and humidity
PRECIPITATION

Average relative humidity (%)

MICROCLIMATE
• No major effect on the micro climate; more or less similar to the climatic
character depicted by data
• Due to less crowding on the outskirts, no heat is trapped around the area. Heat
gain by different materials due to surroundings remains minimal
• Surrounded by empty fields, tiny water bodies, and other natural features, the
climatic temperature might be less as compared to what was predicted
TRAFFIC
Width of the main road (w) : 4.06m
Width of the side road (s): 2.52 m

• Lies on the outskirts of patna, in phulwari shariff, chances of trafficking might

be very minimal.
• But heavy vehicles like buses and trucks might cause inconvenience as no two
way traffic will be allowed

Hp gas godown is nearby which has a flow of trucks to and fro. This might create a problem for
the buses as the roads aren’t wide enough for two way traffic.

Pedestrian and vehicular entry:

pedestrian and vehicular entry side

pedestrian entry side

Impact of pedestrian and vehicles on exit/ entry:

• Entry and exit points shall only be limited to the sides from where people and
vehicles can enter
• West side road might be impacted by the school entry and exit points
// entry and exit cannot happen from south side road as it is prohibited by the brief
WATER FALLING ON THE SITE

Due to the presence of too many green spaces, the water that falls on the site gets
absorbed. Patna doesn’t get too much rainfall.

Potential water clogging points :

The brown hatch areas represent potential water clogging points on the site.
DRAINAGE:
(est.) around 8km of drainage system, 60 % pucca drains, not fully developed, so
major cause of water logging at the time of heavy rains
From this observation we realise that the site will have independent waste collection system to
cater the needs of the school by various means like that of septic tanks

Water body nearby

Water body distance = 155.93m

Water body area = 5593 m sq.
The waterbody nearby might effect the microclimate of the surrounding by increasing the
humidity of the area during peak summer months . Also the winds coming from the side of the
waterbody might be cooled down before reaching the site. This rules out the possible extensive
use of materials like wood .
Dist=1,234.79 m

Materials available nearby :

• Concrete
• Bricks
• Granite
• Cement
• steel
• All common building materials available nearby

NATURE OF THE BUILT SURROUNDING THE SITE

• Surrounded by small single- double storey structures and empty lands
• Buildings require finishing
• Buildings nearby : hp gas godown, chemist shop, hardware shop amongst many
others…

PLACES NEAR THE SITE

Hospitals

• SI hospital : 800m
• KB hospital : 2.3 km
• Mahavir cancer sanstha : 4.7 km
• ESIC model hospital : 3.5km
Proximity to the hospitals tells us if the requirement of an ambulance on the site is important
or not

Bus Station

• Mithapur Bus Stand : 9.8km

• BMP Bus stop : 2.5km
Fire stations

• Fire force station AIIMS: 5.7 km

• Fire station : 4.4.km
There is not enough space for a fire brigade to enter our site , and if incase an accident occurs,
it can turn very deadly. A fire brigade needs 6m open road to move and 9 m turning radius
which is nowhere being provided by our current roads

Police station:

• ITBP camp : 5.8km

• Khagaul Police Station
• Phulari Shariff Police Station
For safety purposes, proximity to the police station is important.

Railway Station :

• Phulwar Shariff railway station : 3km

Airport :

• Jayaprakash Narayan International Airport : 8km

Schools :

• St. raza public school :

• Us public school 1.3 km
• Ranipur school : 2.4 km
• Holypath public school : 1.6 km
• Cambridge public school : 1.6 km
• Phulwari sheriff higher school : 2.4 km
After finding out about the schools I compared the exit and entry points of the school in a bid
to find out how the route functions. It was shocking to see that most of them had connecting
roads of smaller sizes which didn’t provide adequate spaces, but some of them had exclusive
road access unlike ours which somewhat helped the situation as no other vehicle entered the
road without the purpose of accessing the school

ARCHITECTURAL CHARACTER
From the vision case studies that I did (gurukul and akhara), I tried to understand how the
community/ies come(s) together to bring out the essemce of the space, so from that I
understood that the school shouldn’t seem as an alien building according to context; it should
blend in. Yet, it should be an entity with the potential of becoming a landmark. The
surrounding area should be identified by that building. It should seem within the reach of the
people and it should work towards building the community and attracting the people towards
it.

Wouldn’t want to give too many colours, but make it a space with various architecture
elements so that the space becomes a play area for the children.

I want connection to different structures via open corridors and courtyards so that the concept
of indoor and outdoor education doesn’t seem as different things altogether.

Material finish: exposed brick
