SEVESO DISASTER

On the 10th july 1976 a broken valve at Industrie Chimiche Meda Società
Azionarie released a cloud of chemicals in the sky. This mass of dioxin was
carried by the wind to the nearest city: Seveso, that’s the reason we called it
today. The helath problem were like burn skin lesions in the children and skin
disorder associated with dioxin. After the incident, the radiation spread around
and they also caused hearth and breathing problem and, in some people they
developed cancer. The investigation started by the authorities when rabbits
began to die in masse by the chemicals. About 37,000 people were exposed to
the cloud of chemicals. The 4% of the farm’s animal died, and they also were
killed to sto the contamination in the food chain. Over 80,000 animals died.
The affected area were divided into: zone A, the Lost contamineted that was
evacueted and was turned into a park and zone B and R, the next most
contamineted. In 1984, After the governament started a clean up operation,
the decontamination of zone A was complete with 41 barrels of chemical
waste.
