The AM modulation is carried out at an early stage (low level) where the RF input is approximately 50nW with the succeeding stages working in an unlinear mode (class C). Denodulated audio is taken from the output of the transmitter and brought to the modulating control circuit asa negative feedback to compensate for the unlinearity introduced by the RF amplifiers. 3. The output RF power can be set by an adjustable DC voltage to the input of the modulating control op-amp. TA-5103 will automatically switch toa preselected LOW POWER (antenna mismatch or excessive temperature) or manually by a front panel switch. TA 5103/04 has a modular construction for ease of service and maintenance with the tollowing pluggable sub-units. 1. Power Regulator 2.50 W Power Unit 3. Front Panel 4, Main Control Board / Oscillator The transmitter is normally tuned to 25 W / 50 W output (100 W / 200 W PEP) con high power, and 5 W / 10 W (20 W/ 40 W PEP) on low power. Other power levels may be set by DC control on the main control board Low power will always be lower than high power. ‘TA 5103/04 switches automatically to battery at mains drop out. By the use of a negative feedback the modulation is Kept linear at the output of the transmitter. This can be explained at the simplified block diagram (see fig. 8), where the modulator and the succeeding RF amplifier form part of the feed back loop. ry URE _conTROL Fr RECTONAL r AMPLE aupurcr "COUPLER RF oe] ouput A carefully designed directional coupler, lecated to the antenna output, is the final element of the and plays a vital and critical part of a Successful system. Presuming the peak modulation not being limited by saturation, the modulation distortion is very low, approximately equal to the distortion of the audio input to the op-anp. For good system performance it is important that the PF-stages are stable, i.e. that no sudden jumps in power level occur when increasing the drive. Compared with conventional modulation _the following advantages are obtained: 1) Low distortion. 2) Wodulation level approaching 100% without introducing distortion or other unwanted effects. 3) igh overall efficiency. 4) Simple construction, and consequently increased reliability. aly 1995 Page 8 JOTRON electronics as: TECHNICAL HANDBOOK AND MAINTENANCE MAMUAL nooucrno TA-5103/04 3. Page 10 Feb. 88 JOTRO! electronics as TECHNICAL HANDBOOK AND MAINTENANCE MANUAL. TA-5109/04 3.2.2 MICROPHONE AMPLIFIER The signal from pin 45, AF IN, is amplified in two amplifier stages in Ici. The gain in the amplifiers is fixed, but the signal level into the first stage is controlled by a feedback loop and a FET, Ql, which acts as a voltage controlled resistor. The feedback loop is formed by a pick-up of some of the output signal at pin 8, Ici, through capacitor C9 and R18. This Signal is compared with a reference signal from IC2, Pin 1, and the output from Icl, pin 14 is used to charge C7 through R13 and D4. The voltage across C7 then controls the resistance in Ql, and then also the signal level into the amplifier. This loop gives a stable output level with input level variations of more than 30 dB. ‘The attack time of this VOGAD circuit is depending on RI3, C7 and R4, and the decay time is determined by R4 and C7. The VOGAD facility may be switched off by grounding the signal from IC1, pin 14, by the switch Swi 3.2.3 MUTE CIRCUIT ‘The mute circuit is used to inhibit signals below a certain level to reach the modulator. The voltage level at CT is sensed by a schmitt trigger through R73, The reference level is set up by a potmeter, RE. when the signal level into the microphone amplifier is below a certain limit, the voltage across C7 is low, and the output from the scmitt trigger is high. This will switch on Q2 and effectively mute the signal from the amplifier. when ‘the signal level increase, the trigger will turn low at a certain point, 92 will be switched off and the signal will reach the audio filter. ‘There is a fixed hysteresis in the mute circuit, set up by RO. The ute facility may be switched off by using the switch SW3. Feb. 88 Page 11 JOTRON Siectronics TECHNICAL HANDAOOK AND MAINTENANCE MANUAL ‘pmobveT No. TA-5103/04 3.2.4 AUDIO FILTER The audio bandpass filter is realised by a single integrated circuit, Ic7. This is a digital switched capacitor bandpass filter. The oscillator is controlled by & ceramic resonator, and oscillates at 560 kHz. This gives ‘the wanted audio response with very close tolerances. The output from the circuit is coupled to RC circuits to eliminate the clock frequency of the filter. 3.2.5 AUDIO LIMITER ‘The amplitude from the filter may be limited by the two diodes DT and D8. The limiting level is controlled by the potreter R21, and the following two amplifiers assures that the limiting effect is symmetrical, and also independent of the power level. <6. OUTPUT AMPLIFIER The audio signal from the filter is coupled via C20 and superimposed on the DC-level from IC2, pin 1. It is then amplified in IC2 and the signal from pin 7 is fed to pin 2 at P1, (MOD/POWER CONTR). ‘This signal is consisting of a DC level which is relative to ‘the output power level, and an AC level which is relative to the modulation factor. The AC level will always correspond to the DC-level, even if the power level is adjusted. only if the MOD LEVEL adjustment on the front panel is changed, the ratio between AC and DC is changed. 3.2.7. POWER LEVEL CONTROL The power level is set with the two potmeters R38 and R41. R2@ is used to adjust high power level, and R41 controls low power level. When high power is selected, the output from the atch formed by C5 is low, and the transistor o4 is off. the voltage fron R38 is fed directly to a buffer stage in toh and the voltage from pin 1 is used in the other parte of erg board to control the power level. pat page 12 Feb. 88 JOTRON electronics as TECHNICAL HANDBOOK AND MAINTENANCE MANUAL PRODUCT No. TA-5103/04 With the transmitter in low power, Q4 is switched on. That. means that the voltage from R38 is divided between the resistors R39, R40 and R41. By adjusting R4i, this voltage division is adjusted, and thus also the low power level. With this arrangement, the low power level may never exceed the hich power level. To set the desired power levels, high power must first be adjusted, and then low power. 3.2.8 KEY CIRCUITS The transmitter may be keyed either by local key or by remote key. With the LOCAL/REMOTE in local position, the transmitter may be keyed either by the PTT switch on the front panel, or by a PTT switch on the microphone. Local Key is grounding the KEY input (pin 39) on the main control board. This will turn on 98, and energize the relay REL1. The relay contacts will give power to pin 9 to 13 at the 50W unit. @5 and QS form a current limited source for driving external relays on Pi, pin 16. When key input is grounded, this will also cause the latch formed by IC5 to reset, so that the power control may be set at high power. Q3 is also switched off, enabling signal to pass on to the modulator. With the LOCAL/REMOTE switch in REMOTE position, the transmitter is keyed remotely by the remote line. The operation of remote key may be either by using line loop keying, or be applying external voltage to the line. In the first case, the switch SW2 must be in position pc. Then this voltage is fed to the center tap of the primary winding of Ti, and out on the remote line via R44 and pin 24. By DC-wise short-circuit the remote line with a remote control unit, this voltage is returned to the other side of the primary winding through R43. From the center tap, the voltage is fed via R45 and D3 to the LOCAL/REMOTE switch on the front panel. With the switch in REMOTE position, the voltage is connected to REMOTE II input on pin 28 and 32. Here it will turn on Q7, which then is connected in paralell to the local key, and the keying is performed as described above. If the remote control unit is not able to operate with line loop keying, the transmitter may be keyed by applying a positive voltage of more than 12 volts, either tc the Feb. 88 Page 13 JOTRON electronics as TECHNICAL HANODOOK AND MAW TENANCE MANUAL paooucr no - TA-5103/04 Proper side of the remote line, or to the remote key input on the rear socket. sW2 must in that case be in position 600 chm, to inhibit the internal voltage from reaching the line. The key relay, REL1, has an additional set of changover contacts which is directly connected to the rear plug. These contacts may be used for controlling external equipment, for instance mute a receiver while the transmitter is keyed. 3.2.9 OVER-VOLTAGE PROTECTION. One of the op-anps in IC4 is used as an over-voltage protection. The 28 from the power regulator is divided with the resistors R53 and R54, and the result is compared with the fixed SV. If the 25V line reach above a certain limit, ‘this Will cause the comparator to turn low, and 98 to turn off, and unkey the transmitter. This will protect the output power transistors which are sensitive to high voltages 3.2.10 LOW-VOLTAGE PROTECTION. If the transmitter is run on lower supply voltage than specified, this may cause severe distortion of the nodulation. However, the transmitter may normally be used on iow power without any problems, so that conmunication still nay continue This is taken care of by on of the other op-amps in 1c4. The voltage from the power regulator is also sensed on pin 2, and compared with the fixed 5V. If the input voltage is below a certain level, this causes the comparator to give a high output on pin 1, and the set the latch. 04 will” turn on, and the transmitter continues the operation on low power By adjusting R56, the trigger level may be set. The actual level is normally set to 22v. 3.2.11 HIGH TEMPERATURE PROTECTION. Tf the ambient temperature is very high, and the transmitter is contiuously keyed, the temperature on the heatsink may reach @ level which may damage the output transistors. 1% take care of this, there is a protection circuit. On the Heatsink there is a NTC resistor which senses the temperature. It is connected to the TEMP PROBE input on pin Page 14 Feb. 88 JOTRON siectronics rechieat MamoBOOK AND MAINTENANCE MANUAL pnooucT No. TA-5103/04 14, and to pin 13 on Ic4, When connected to 15V via R61 and to ground, this gives a voltage on pin 13 which is decreasing with increasing temperature. when this voltage As below the fixed SV, this will give a high voltage on pin 14, and the latch will be set. Consequently, the transmitter will operate on low power. This will reduce the heat, and the operation may continue without damaging the transistors. The actual temperature for the circuit to trig is approximately 95 deg. C. 3.2.12 ANTENNA MISMATCH PROTECTION. From the directional coupler on the power unit, a signal Proportional to the reflected power is present on the REFLECTED IN terminal on pin 7. This is connected to @ comparator in IC4. If the reflected power is above a certain Limit, this will cause the comparator to give high output on pin 8, and set the latch. The transmitter is then run on low power. This will protect the output transistors from operation under severe mismatch conditions, which may cause hazardious voltages and excessive heat. 3.2.13 MODULATION METER CIRCUITS. on pin 4, MONITOR IN, signal from the directional coupler on the power stage, is fed to an amplifier in IC3. This amplifier is followed by a current source which is connected to pin 41, MOD$ METER. The output from the current source may be adjusted with R64, enabling calibration of the front panel meter reading. ‘he gain in the first stage is controlled by the HIGH/LOW power signal. In high power, Q10 is switched off, and in low power it is switched on. This increases the gain in low poner, thus giving the same readings on the instrument on both poker levels. The difference in gain corresponds to a high/low power ratio of 5 to 1. at other settings, the nodulation meter may only be adjusted to correct readings for one of the power levels. 3.2.14 CRYSTAL OSCILLATOR. ‘the crystal oscillator is a separate circuit on the main control board. Power to the circuit is delivered from the keyed 25 supply, and a separate regulator, IC101, gives 15V to the circuit. Feb. 88 Page 15 electronics as TECHNICAL HANDBOOK AND MAINTENANCE MANUAL. ‘PRODUCT No. TA-5103/04 The oscillator runs directly on the output frequency. This eliminates the possible spurious signals from frequency multiplication. Fine adjustment of the frequency may be done with C101 and Li01. 1103 and C107 form together @ resonant circuit on the output frequency, forcing the crystal to operate on the correct overtone. 9102 amplifies the signal in a broadband amplifier. Tl 1s the output transformer. A small attenuator is forned by Rill, R112 and R113, giving better matching to the coaxial output, and also increases the isolation between the Liator and the power stages. A small part of the ouput signal is rectified in D101 and fed to pin 34, OSC LEVEL. This is used on the front panel meter to check the cperation of the oscillator. The output fron the oscillator is normally about 50 ni. AS soon as this voltage is present, the antenna relay, RVI, is energized, connecting the antenna to the transmitter output. ‘The signal from the oscillator is connected to the input coaxial connector, P3. A small attenuator follows the connector, to increase the matching to the input coaxial cabel. ‘The first stage, Q1; serves as both an amplifier modulator stage. The current Ici via 93. and the through Q1 is controlled by Q2 and Q4 form a single-ended broadband amplifier. the rage 16 Feb. 88 JOTRO Sloctronica ae TECHNICAL HANDBOOK AND MAINTENANCE MANUAL PRODUCTNO.: TA-5103/04 output is coupled via a push. @ push-pull transformer, Ti, and to the final power stage Q5 and Q6. This stage is a push-pull qnplitier aiving SOW cartier poxer, or 200 PEP. The output fron the amplifier is coupled to the antenna filter via @ balun transformer made by coaxial line. The power stages run in an unlinear mode, class c, and this increases the overall efficiency of the transmitter. A S-section low-pass filter follows the amplifier. This filter reduces the contents of the harmonics to less than -T0dBc. The cut-off frequency of the filter is approximately 150 Miz. A directional coupler is the last element in the signal path. It plays a vital role in the modulation process, and is a critical part for obtaining good modulation characteristics. Both forward and reflected power are detected in the coupler. D3 detects the reflected power, and D4 the forward power. Both signals are fed to the front panel instrument, 50 that signal levels may be monitored. the forward power detector is the most critical part in this construction. To linearize the detection, D4 is biased by an other diode, D2. This will assure that temperature drift in D4 is minimized, since the temperatures on the two diodes are approximately the sane. The signal out of D4 will consist of a Dc level, propertional to the power level, and an AC level, proportional to the modulation level. This signal is fed to Pecnparator, ICl, pin 3. Here the signal is compared with the similar signal from the main control board. The resulting signal controls the current in Qi via Q3. Thus the signal out of Ql may well be distorted, But this is compensated for through the amplifier, and the signal at the antenna ouput has very little distortion, if it has not been limited by saturation or other limiting effects through the amplifier. the total distortion out of the transmitter should be of the ‘same magnitude as the distortion out of the audio circuits on the main control board. Thermally coupled to the heatsink, there is a NTC resistor, R20. This serve as a heat detector, and is connected to the Qvertenperature protection circuit on the main control board. Feb. 68 Page 17 JOTRON Sioctronice as TECHNICAL HANDBOOK AND MAINTENANCE MANUAL PRODUCT No. TA-5103/04 3.4 POWER REGULATOR TA5102-03 The power regulator supplies the rest of the transmitter with regulated power on 15¥ and 25V Tmput to the regulator is from the rectifier bridge and into terminal 8, RECTIFIED AC IN. Here 3 filter capacitors. Ch, C2 and C3 are reducing the ripple from the rectifier. Dc supply is applied to terminal 7, BATT. IN. Terminal 9, Ac DET IN, is sencing whether there is AC present on the rectifier. If there is, Q2 will be off, leaving the relay inthe normally closed position. ‘The power from the rectifier will be used. If AC disappears, this will turn on 92 and energize the relay. Then power from the DC supply Will be used. The tine delay on changeover from AC to DC is negligible, so communication will not be interrupted by such an event. From the relay contacts, the power is fed to two power regulators. Ic] is an standard regulator capable of delivering one ampere, and the resistors Rid and R15 set the output voltage to 15V. The main regulator is build up by discrete components. ‘This is to minimize the voltage loss across the regulator. The voltage on the output 25V terminal (2), is sensed by a resistor divider into pin 9 on Ic3. Here this voltage is compared with the voltage from the 15V regulator, through the resistors RIT and R18. Thus the 25V is always directly depending on the regulated 15V. The output from the comparator (pin 3), controls the current in 93, and also in au. The output from the regulator is normally approximately 2ev. If the input voltage is below this value, The regulator will be fully switched on to reduce the voltage drop to a minimum. On higher supply voltages, the voltage fat the ouput will be fixed, and some power will be lost as heat. Therefore the regulator is mounted on a heatsink, and also attached to the main chassis wall. There is incorporated a thermistor as a temperature sensor, (R24) The voltage from this sensor is connected to a voltage comparator on pin 6, IC2. Here the voltage is compared with a fixed voltage, given from the 15V line. If the temperature gets higher than approximately 90 deg c, the comparator will give a high voltage out, and through’ D3, ‘this will affect the reference for the main regulator. This will force the main regulator to switch off the power, and ae 6 Feb. 88 electronics as: TECHNICAL HANDBOOK AND MAINTENANCE MANUAL PRODUCT NO: TA-5103/04 the heat will be reduced. R20 gives some positive feedback to the comparator, and a hysteresis is established. Therefore the temperature will have to be reduced below certain limit before the regulator is switched on again. The main current is fed through two resistors, Rll and R12. The voltage accross these resistors is a direct measure for the current delivered by the regulator. This voltage is amplified in an amplifier, and is through a variable resistor connected to terminal 6, CURRENT, and used to or the current consumption on the front panel weter. re is another potmeter, R6, which is used to compensate for offset voltage in the amplifier. The output from this amplifier is also used to override the reference to the regulator, through D4. This will have the effect of current limiting, and with the current values of ‘the components, the current from the regulator is limited to approximately 12 amperes. This is well beyond the current consumption in a 15W unit, but this regulator is also used in a SOW unit, and there it is necessary with this high current level. ‘the front panel meter is also connected to terminal 3, UNREG oUT. Here the unregulated voltage may be monitored. 3.5 FRONT PANEL BOARD TAS102-04 ‘the front board contains the following circuits: Meter circuits, indicators, monitor amplifier, nodulation level adjustment, LOCAL/REMOTE switch, HIGH/LOW power switch and PIT switch. The microphone is also connected via this board. ‘The instrument circuits consist of an instrument rotary suitch to select the wanted measurement. Some of the Signals say be adjusted on trimpots. Oscillator level is adjusted on R7, forward power is adjusted on R@ and reflected power is adjusted on R9. There is a voltage follower between the switch and the meter, and this may be connected as an amplifier to enable the use of other instruments. The meter deflection may be adjusted with R14. This is used to get correct reading on the fixed signals. ‘The indicators are three LEDs, one for AC power, one for DC power and one for carrier level. The first two indicators are connected to the corresponding signal on the power regulator, and when the transmitter is operated on AC power, both will be lit. Feb. 88 Page 19 JOTRON sloctronics am TECHNICAL HANDBOOK AND MAINTENANCE MANUAL Prooucr No TA-5103/04 The carrier indicator is controlled by the transistor 92. This is controlled by the signal from the directional coupler, forward power. The intensity of this indicator Will therefore to some extent be related to the power level. The AC part of the forward power signal is amplified in a separate amplifier, ICl, and via C6 connected to the output Jack, MONITOR. This output may be used to listen to the transmitted signal with a headset, or it may be used for Reasuring purposes. ‘The LOCAL/REMOTE switch connects the key signal from the PTT and microphone key terminals to the local key input on ‘the main control board when in LOCAL position. The microphone audio is also connected to AF IN on the main control board. In REMOTE position, the local key is disconnected, end so is the microphone. The keying is then connected to remote, and the audio is taken from the line transformer on the main control board. ‘The LOW POWER switch is connected to the local key input on the main control board. When the transmitter is keyed, this terminal is grounded. If the switch is in position low power, this will give a short pulse out fron Ql. This is nnected to the reflected power line, and this willforce ‘the latch on the main control board to be set, and the transmitter is turned down to low power. ‘The modulation level control, R21, is connected vetween ground and the LEVEL terminal.
