ot likely to be cost-effective for a public domain movie, sadly.

gs, and work brilliantly within the story’s context.
As it is, it’s too late for that, but I love it just the same, regardless of its
weaknesses and eccentricities, or maybe because of them.

It sounds excellent, with good range and nice percussion resonance.
As one would expect for a low-budget rehash of an already sad mess, the script d
oesn’t make much sense and the acting isn’t worth much.
The consummate silent film actor for that reason, he overcomes the makeup to cre
ate an unforgettable character that is both sympathetic in his pathos and amusin
g in his childlike delight.
Ayckbourn has established a set-up in which his characters overlap, however impr
obable some may find the ways in which they do so.
Another difficulty is the presence of tough, dramatic sci-fi like Battlestar Gal
actica that challenges the viewer and reveals the dark side of each character.
Once inside, the house goes into lockdown and the ghosts come out, leading to th
e expected body count mayhem.
But it managed all of these with panache and it still holds up well for the most
part.
Since I wear glasses already, it took a while to get them properly adjusted, but
they come across reasonably well in three dimensions.
Andy Mikita spends too much time on plot summary that is obvious to anyone who w
atched the episode.
Anderson does provide some engaging comments with his typical casual demeanor, b
ut I would have enjoyed a lengthier interview.
The story is weak at times, but this is still a powerful character study that tu
gs at our heartstrings on many occasions.
If he could have only had a deeper, more realized story, this might be Evans’ bi
g breakthrough.
Depressing and hard to love, Private Fears in Public Places still packs an emoti
onal punch, with performances and direction that eclipse a standard script.
But the history of the film itself is almost just as intriguing, making this DVD
release even more important.

Blake contributes an "audio essay" which in my neck of the woods qualifies as a
commentary, since it’s both full-length and scene-specific.

Not for nothing did Universal call this a "Super Jewel.
Instantly following this surprise, it becomes crystal clear just how important t
he plodding, initial scenes are to the rest of the picture; a sly, interesting d
irectorial tactic.
It’s a film made for a cult following, one I hope it develops over the years.
The other gem is Progeny, which reveals the existence of human-form Replicators,
who might be unstoppable.
I didn’t notice any edge enhancement or other artifacting at any point.
I’d sure have liked to have heard from Dante and Miller, though.
After struggling early to escape the shadow of its origins, the show has develop
ed into a consistent, often-inventive alternative to more serious fare.
Dante can’t resist the in-jokes, many of which are quite enjoyable, such as Anth
ony’s father being portrayed by William Schallert, the ultimate TV dad.
Solid black and shadow levels combine with a near complete lack of grain and dir
t to complete this nice transfer.

With a solid cast and up-and-coming director, this little-seen indie effort gets
a chance at a wider audience thanks to IFC’s new DVD release.
