INTRODUCTION

Earthquake resistant design related to Indian codes are being updated, gradually to meet the global
design practices! The revisions in IS 1893 (Part 1) : 2016, IS 13920 : 2016 & IS 16700 : 2017 have
generated few practical difficulties. Almost 5+ years have been passed and numerous online / offline
sessions arranged by various experts on the different platforms. Still there are practical difficulties in
the industry during the implementation of the various clauses of these standards.

Recently, we conducted live technical discussion wherein Dr. Ashok Jain shared his insight and
perspective related to IS 1893 (Part 1) : 2016. Through registration form, we received more than 300+
important questions pertaining to earthquake resistant design.

In view of the above, we have designed an online course EQ-STR-002, related to earthquake resistant
design to focus on the fundamentals of earthquake resistant design, discussions on important clauses
of the IS codes & implementation of the clauses in the software ETABS & STAAD.Pro.

The course will cover important aspects related to earthquake resistant design, wherein generally the
practicing engineers are facing the difficulties. We will discuss the same in detail along with the
possible solutions. The overall objective of the course is to discuss the fundamentals of earthquake
resistant design which enables the practicing engineers to take an appropriate engineering decision,
in case of ambiguities.

WHAT IS UNIQUE ABOUT THE COURSE?

 The course is designed by the experienced engineers (Dr. Ashok Jain & Mr. Bhavin Shah)
who have together more than six decades of experience in the field of structural
engineering.
 The entire course is designed from the practical aspects which can be readily used in the real
projects.
 The course is designed to have an interactive mode so that the problems / doubts of the
participants can be effectively addressed.
 A WhatsApp group will be created for quick communication between the participants and the
faculty members. The participants will be able to share the discussion points, doubts, queries,
etc. in the group. The details in the group will be collated for further discussion in the next
session.
 All the sessions will be recorded and recording of each session will be shared within few hours.
If someone miss out the live session then he/she can go through the recording before
attending the next session. The participants can share the doubts/queries in the WhatsApp
group, after going through the recording which will be addressed in the next session.
 Recording will be available with all the participants for 180 days.
 Certificate will be issued on successful completion of the online course (minimum 80%
attendance is required.).

COURSE FACULTY
Dr. Ashok K. Jain – Retd. Professor of Civil Engineering, I.I.T. Roorkee
Dr. Ashok Jain is currently a structural consultant having over 40 years
of experience. Formerly, a Professor of Civil Engineering at the Indian
Institute of Technology Roorkee, Roorkee. Dr. Jain received his Ph.D.
in Civil Engineering from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI in
1978. He received gold and silver medals in B.E. (Civil Engineering) and
M.E. (Structural Engineering) at the University of Roorkee, Roorkee. He
is well known for imparting latest knowledge on each subject/topic
through latest analytic tools such as MATLAB, MS Excel, SAP2000, and
ETABS.

Dr. Jain has published over 50 refereed journal papers and over 60 conference papers on various
topics. He has authored five text books:

• Dynamics of Structures with MATLAB Applications, Published by Pearson (2016)

• Reinforced Concrete – Limit State Design now in its 7th edition (2012) – This book has the
distinction of being the first book on the subject published in 1983 in India and enjoys
excellent reputation till date.
• Advanced Structural Engineering with Finite Element Method, 4th edition (due 2022)
• Elementary Structural Analysis, 3rd edition (due 2022)
• Fortran programming, second edition (1990) – now discontinued

He has delivered keynote addresses in many conferences and conducted short specialist courses on
Reinforced Concrete, water retaining structures, ductile detailing of structures, dynamics of structures
and earthquake resistant design.

Bhavin Shah – Founder & CEO, SQVe Consultants
Mr. Bhavin Shah is passionate about Engineering profession with two
decades of experience. He is having a dream for enhancing the
engineering profession in different organisations. He completed
graduation in Civil Engineering and Masters in Structures from Sardar
Patel University. He is having unique experience of working in the
specialized firm of civil / structural consultancy which grew as
multidisciplinary firm (VMS), large multidisciplinary firm (L&T Chiyoda
Ltd.) and owner based engineering set up (Adani Infra (I) Ltd.). He
worked in different organisations at different levels, starting from
junior design engineer to CEO. He is Founder & CEO of SQVe
Consultants. He is pursuing Ph.D. in Structural Engineering related to
earthquake resistant design of industrial structures.

METHODOLOGY
 The entire course is designed in the ONLINE mode.
 The course will spread over four weeks with approximate 22+ contact hours.
 The live sessions will be conducted using ZOOM software.
 During four weeks of time, the interaction can be done with faculty in the WhatsApp group
as well as during the live sessions.
 During course, the participants will be encouraged to share their project problems so that we
may receive diversified areas for the discussion.
 The course is designed with a process of learning together.
 In the live sessions, last ~20 minutes will be allocated for Q&A.
