I am a 400 level Nursing Student of the above named institution. I am conducting a

research on the topic: ASSESSMENT OF KNOWLEDGE, ATTITUDE AND PRACTICE

OF STANDARD PRECAUTIONS AMONG NURSES IN THREE SELECTED HOSPITAL

IN OGBOMOSO, OYO STATE.

Kindly supply the required information to the best of your knowledge. This questionnaire

is for academic purpose and for future use. You are kindly requested to provide answers to

all the questions outlined below. Please, do not write your name on the questionnaire. All

The above table shows that 59(44.7%) of the respondents are between ages 20 and 29 years, 42(31.8%)
are between 30-39 years of age, 15(1.4%) are between 40-49 years while 16(12.1%) are 50 and above
years of age. Also, 9(6.8%) are males while 123(93.2%) are females. Moreover, 125(94.7%) are
Christians while 7(5.3%) ARE Muslims. Of the respondents, 4(3%) are from igbo ethnic group,
122(92.4%) are from Yoruba ethnic group, 1(0.8%) is fro Hausa ethnic group while 5(3.8%) are from
other ethnic groups that were not stated. Finally, 77(58.3%) of the respondents have RN certificate only,
39(29.5%) have their degree and other post basics certificate while 16(12.1%) have their masters in
NUrsing

recommendation to protect only the patient and the healthcare workers while 17(12.9%) did not.
Also, 120(90.9%) of the respondents agre that Invasive procedures increase the risk of
Nosocomial infections while 12(9.1%) did not. Moreover, 125(94.7%) agree hat standard
precautions apply for all patients while 7(5.3%) did not. 120(90.9%) agree that Hand hygiene is
recommended for each procedure while 12(9.1%) did not agree. 126(95.5%) accept that Gloves
should be changed between care of different patients while 6(4.5%) did not accept. Furthermore,
122(92.4%) of the respondents accept that When in contact with blood or any other potentially
contaminated materials,wash hands immediately while 10(7.6%) did not accept. Also, 97(73.5%)
agree that Contact with objects, materials, equipments, clothing and individuals with
contaminated personal protective equipment should be avoided while 35(26.5%) did not.
Finally, 115(87.1%) of the respondents agree that In procedures where there's a possibility of
blood, body fluid, secretions or excretions spilling, Protective masks or face shield and protective
apron should be used while 17(12.9%) did not.

The above table shows that 120(90.9%) of the respondents agree that Standard precaution can prevent
spread of infectious diseases so should be observed, 2(1.5%) disagree while 1(7.6%) did not decide.
It also revealed that 115(87.1%) agree that There is need to wash hands after touching patient’s
surroundings, 7(5.3%) disagree while 10(7.6%) did not decide. 15(11.4%) of the respondents agree that
Sharp needles should be recapped after use, 102(77.3%) disagree while 15(11.4%) did not decide.
129(97.7%) of the respondents agree that Sharp objects should be disposed into a sharp container
while 3(2.3%) did not decide. Also, 117(88.6%) agree that Hands should be washed after removing
disposable glove , 5(3.8%) disagree while 10(7.6%) did not decide. Moreover, 100(75.8%) of the
respondents agree that Disposable face mask and eye shield should be worn whenever there is
possibility of splash or splatter to the mouth, 9(6.8%) disagree while 23(17.4%) did not decide. also,
105(79.5%) agree that Disposable gloves should be worn whenever there is possibility of
exposure to blood or other body fluids, 9(6.8%) disagree while 23(17.4%) did not decide. 120(90.9%)
of the respondents agree that Needle stick injuries should be reported to the hospital, 5(3,8%)
disagree while 7(5.3%) did not decide. Again 119(90.2%) agree that All patients should be screened

From the above table majority of the respondents 102(77.3%) always perform hand hygiene
before and after touching patients, 20(15.2%) does that sometimes while about 10(7.5%) does
not.72.7% always clean spills of blood with antiseptic solution while about 22.7% do it
sometimes while 4.5% does not. About 72% clean any spillage of blood immediately with mob
and stick while about 11.4% do it sometimes while about 16.6% does not. About 75.8% always
use 0.5% chlorine bleach to disinfect instrument before washing while 14.4% do it sometimes
and 9.8% does not. About 19.7% always recap needles after use while 22.7% sometimes recap
needles while 57.6% does not. Majority of the respondents (65.2%) always dispose needles
immediately after use while about 24.2% dispose needles immediately after use sometimes and

about 10.6% does not. Majority of the respondents (81.8%) wash hands immediately after
contact with patients blood while about 18.2% wash hands immediately sometimes

From the above table, it shows that 75.8% agreed that lack of knowledge of standard precautions
influence the practice of standard precautions while 24.2% disagreed. About 87.1% agreed that
the belief that you will not acquire infection in the hospital can influence practice of standard
precautions while 12.9% does not agree. Majority of the respondents (80.3%) agreed that Lack
of functional infection control committee can influence the practice of standard precautions
while about 19.7% does not. About 95.5% agreed that Absence of regular training on infection
control can also affect the practice while 4.5% disagreed. Majority (98.5%) agreed that lack of
adequate facilities/resources can influence practice of standard precautions while 1.5% does not
agree. About 88.6% agreed that time constraints influence the practice of standard precautions

while 11.4% disagree. Finally, 95.5% agreed that excessive workload can affect the practice of
standard precautions while 4.5% disagree.
