II. SOLUTION OF A D.E.

 Any non-derivative relation among the variables which

satisfies the equation is a solution to it.

TYPES OF SOLUTIONS OF A D.E.

 General Solution (G.S.) – Equations containing arbitrary
constants.
Ex. 𝑦 = 𝑥 + 2𝑥 + 𝐶
 Particular Solution (P.S.) – Equations obtained from the
general Solution with the constant of integration being
determined.
Ex. 𝑦 = 𝑥 + 2𝑥 + 1

𝒅𝒚
Ex. 1: Find the G.S. and P.S. of = 𝟑𝒙𝟐 , if x = 2 when y = 4
𝒅𝒙

Solution:
Solving for G.S.,
= 3𝑥
𝑑𝑦 = 3𝑥 𝑑𝑥
Integrating both sides (IBS),
∫ 𝑑𝑦 = ∫ 3𝑥 𝑑𝑥 + 𝐶
𝑦 = 3 ∫ 𝑥 𝑑𝑥 + 𝐶

𝑦=3 +𝐶

𝒚 = 𝒙𝟑 + 𝑪  G.S.
Solving for P.S., x = 2 when y = 4
𝑦=𝑥 +𝐶
4 = (2) + 𝐶
4= 8+𝐶
𝐶 = −4
Therefore,
𝒚 = 𝒙𝟑 − 𝟒  P.S.

𝒅𝒚
Ex. 2: Find the G.S. and P.S. of the D.E., = 𝟐𝒚. Given that y = 4
𝒅𝒙
when x = 0.
Solution:
Solving for G.S.,
= 2𝑦

= 2 𝑑𝑥

IBS,

∫ = 2 ∫ 𝑑𝑥 + 𝐶

ln 𝑦 = 2𝑥 + 𝐶
Antilog,
𝑦= 𝑒
𝑦= 𝑒 ∙𝑒 but 𝑒 = 𝐶
𝒚 = 𝑪𝒆𝟐𝒙  G.S.
Solving for P.S., y = 4 when x = 0
𝑦 = 𝐶𝑒
( )
4 = 𝐶𝑒
𝐶=4
𝒚 = 𝟒𝒆𝟐𝒙  P.S.
