□ Typical transmission patterns of contagious diseases

ㅇ 비말감염 (Droplet transmission) When an infected person coughs,
( )

sneezes, or talks, their respiratory droplets (saliva, nasal discharge,

etc.) containing infectious particles travel to and contact the other
person’s mouth or nose, transferring the disease.

ㅇ (접촉감염) (Contact transmission) When a person touches an

infected animal or person (direct contact), or a surface or
object that has been contaminated by an infected person’s
disease particles (indirect contact) and then touch his/her eyes,
mouth or nose before washing hands, the person becomes
infected.

ㅇ (Airborne transmission) Droplets containing infectious particles

can be present in the air and then enter the body of
somebody else by inhalation, making him/her infected.
* Experts say the most frequent route of COVID-19 transmission
is droplet transmission, and airborne transmission is unlikely.

□ Analysis of patents filed/issued in the field of contagious diseases

ㅇ To retrieve patents issued by major countries in the field of
prevention of transmission of contagious diseases, KIPO used
the following key words: virus, contagious/infectious diseases,
prevention of contagion (infection)/transmission, and disinfection
& sterilization.

ㅇ As a result, 30 patents issued in South Korea, Japan and the

U.S. were retrieved in areas such as face protection, protective
clothing, disinfectant & sanitizer, and decontamination &
disinfection system for public places
