Portal crane. Normally FLS supplies a dimension sketch based on the local conditions and corresponding to the heaviest kiln section (including, in certain cases, a tyre). The portal crane should be designed’ror 4 hoisting units. These may be ordinary manual hoists, pulleys with hand or motor driven winches. The portal crane travels on rails placed horizontally in the lowest possible position for the whole length of the kiln, The height and width of the crane should be determined so that there is free space for transportation at all the foundations. 2. One or more mobile cranes which will have to be operated by special staff, One or two hoisting shears with accessory manoeuvring winch. Also for these special staff should be employed. Scaffolding with roller skids and trucks. The material may be wood, sectional iron, or special scaffolding or tubular scaffoldin, For the barring of the kiln during erection, alignment and welding hoists or winches may be used, but it is recommended - especially in the case of large kilns - to use the gearing - temporarily set up - with the corresponding gear and perhaps a barring device. This method reduces the erection time considerably. The necessary pull in tons for barring the kiln tube by means of wires placed around the tube can be determined by means of the diagram on sketch 4B. Table 1 on sketch 4B gives the tensile strength in kilos for galva- nized and ungalvanised steel wire, respectively. Table 2 on sketch 4B gives the normal, permissible load for the various slings used in connection with cranes and hoists and it is recommended to observe the safety factor indicated. For weights of the most heavy parts, refer transport sketoh. F-ss70-1 Remark!
