What you'll learn:
• What is extracted research paper.
• Differences between thesis/dissertation &
the extracted research paper.
• Steps of converting thesis/dissertation into
an extracted research paper.
Extracted research
• Writing an extracted research article from a
thesis is not simply a task of cutting &
pasting.

• The purpose and format of a thesis or

dissertation is very different from that of an
extracted article or research paper.
Differences between Thesis &
extracted research article

Differences between Thesis &
extracted research article

MSc/PhD Thesis Extracted paper

• Just one • Can have more than
• Has to include a 1 paper out of the
defense presentation thesis.
for a specified • No committee to
committee. discuss it.
• To have a scientific • No academic degree
degree. for it.
Steps:
A journal article is much shorter than a thesis, and
consequently, requires a tighter framework.
Thesis can run up to a few 100 pages - 20,000
words.
A journal article 3000-6000 words.
Steps
• Complete editing the thesis according to the
recommendations of your defense committee.
• Choose the publishing journal.
• Follow the publishing guidelines of the journal.
• Start re-writing your thesis into the new
extracted research paper.
1. Length:
Each section of the extracted research has to be
short. This should be done by selecting and
rewriting content from the thesis, not by copying
and pasting.

You need to be extremely careful to preserve the

essence of the study while leaving out the
redundant details.
2: Abstract Vs. Summary
• According to the instructions of the target
journal.
• Some journals require a structured abstract
while others prefer an unstructured one.
3: Introduction
• A thesis usually has a more detailed introduction.
• In an extracted research , the literature review is
more brief.
• If your thesis includes more than one research
question, narrow down the focus
to just one research question for
your extracted research.
4. Methods:
• An extracted research requires a more
controlled presentation of methods.

• Limit yourself to describing, only the details of

the methodology used

• A comprehensive discussion of the research

approach is not required here.
5. Results:
• While a thesis usually reports each and every
result in considerable details,
• Extracted research reports only the main
findings.
• You should only report results that are directly
relevant to the
research question.
6. Discussion:
• The discussion section of a thesis is again more
detailed, providing a thorough interpretation of
all the results.
• The discussion section of a Extracted research
should be clear and to-the-point.
• Do not make the
mistake of repeating
your results in this
section.
7. References:
• Extracted research include a limited number
of citations, and the reference section includes
only works that have been cited within the
article.
• Some journals specify the maximum number
of references that can be included.
Do Not Forget
• Remember to reference your thesis in the
extracted research/ article
• Mention in the cover letter that the article is
based on your thesis.
