LIST OF WORDS: OTHER WORDS & PHRASE (UNIT 8)

Abandon: To leave a place, thing, or person, usually forever.

Example: The police are trying to trace the mother of a newborn baby found abandoned outside a
hospital.

Access: The method or possibility of getting near to a place or person.

Example: The doors are extra-wide for ease of access.

Annual: Happening once every year.

Example: The flowers at the annual flower show were a beautiful sight.

Attitude: A feeling or opinion about something or someone, or a way of behaving that is caused by
this.

Example: My sister's attitude earned her the nickname of Sassy as a child.

Best-selling: A new book or other product that has sold a great number of copies.

Example: But fans of the best-selling books plan to boycott the movie

Biscuit: A small, flat cake that is dry and usually sweet.

Example: She passed a plate of biscuits around.

Cable: A set of wires, covered by plastic, that carries electricity, phone signals, etc.

Example: This cable attaches the printer to the computer.

Cool: Slightly cold.

Example: She ate the meat and drank some of the cool water.

Cream: The thick, yellowish-white liquid that forms on the top of milk.
Example: Ice cream is popular among children.

Crossword: A game in which you write words that are the answers to questions in a pattern of black
and white squares.

Example: Some have suggested that doing crossword puzzles helps keep the mind active.

Cyclist: Someone who rides a bicycle.

Example: The taxi-driver beeped impatiently at the cyclist.

Demand: To ask for something forcefully, in a way that shows that you do not expect to be refused.

Example: The demand for low-income housing is increasing as the economy gets worse.

Demonstration: The act of showing someone how to do something, or how something works.

Example: The rise in unemployment is just another demonstration of the government's incompetence.

Developing world: A developing country or area of the world is poorer and has less advanced
industries, especially in Africa, Latin America, or Asia.

Example: In the developing world cigarette consumption is increasing.

Divorced: Married in the past but not now married.

Example: His second marriage was annulled because he never divorced his first wife.

Employed: Having a job working for a company or another person.

Example: She was employed in a bank.

Endanger: To put someone or something at risk or in danger of being harmed, damaged, or destroyed.

Example: She couldn't endanger these people.

Engineering: The work of an engineer, or the study of this work.

Example: The Eiffel Tower is a remarkable feat of engineering.


Exaggerated: Seeming larger, more important, better, or worse than it really is.

Example: There is an exaggerated sense of economic crisis.

Facilities: A place, especially including buildings, where a particular activity happens.

Example: The training facility is scheduled to open in April 2005.

Flash: To shine brightly and suddenly, or to make something shine in this way.

Example: She flashed the torch into the dark room.

Fountain: A stream of water that is forced up into the air through a small hole, especially for
decorative effect, or the structure in a lake or pool from which this flows.
Example: They also sell garden ornaments such as statues and fountains.

Globalization: The increase of trade around the world, especially by large companies producing and
trading goods in many different countries.

Example: Christmas is seen as more of a Western custom that has been introduced to Korea due to
globalization.

Hypothetical: Imagined or suggested but not necessarily real or true.

Example: I would not wish to comment on a hypothetical situation.

Investigative: Intended to examine a situation in order to discover the truth.

Example: The documentary was an example of investigative journalism at its best.

Launderette: A place where you pay to use machines that wash and dry clothes.

Example: The coin-operated launderettes cannot half wash a bundle of clothes.

Living conditions: The conditions in which someone lives, seen in terms of their sanitary value, social
status etc. noun.

Example: He said it did not suggest that his liver condition is worsening.

Look-alike: Someone or something that is similar in appearance to someone or something else.

Example: Our frames are stronger and thicker than every other look-alike.

Media: (usually used with a plural verb) the means of communication, as radio and television,
newspapers, magazines, and the internet, that reach or influence people widely.

Example: His interest in cricket has been well-documented by the media.

Movie: A film shown in a cinema or on television and often telling a story.

Example: The new Spielberg movie comes out in August.

Naked: Not covered by clothes.

Example: He answered the door half naked.

Negotiation: The process of discussing something with someone in order to reach an agreement with
them, or the discussions themselves.
Example: The president is predisposed towards negotiation and favours a peaceful way of resolving
the crisis.

Network: A large system consisting of many similar parts that are connected together to allow
movement or communication between or along the parts, or between the parts and a control centre.

Example: The government has announced an ambitious programme to modernize the railway network.

Nude: Not wearing any clothes.

Example: He now became a nude and beardless youth, the type of the young athlete.

Overcrowding: Containing too many people or things.

Example: Prefabrication was the solution for widespread overcrowding.

Pathetic: Causing feelings of sadness, sympathy, or sometimes lack of respect, especially because a
person or an animal is suffering.

Example: His car is a pathetic piece of junk.

Patience: The ability to wait, or to continue doing something despite difficulties, or to suffer without
complaining or becoming annoyed.

Example: She bore witness to his patience and diligence.

Pie: A type of food made with meat, vegetables, or fruit covered in pastry and baked.

Example: The apple pie was as good as the one my grandmother used to make.

Pompous: Too serious and full of importance.

Example: He's a pompous old prig who's totally incapable of taking a joke.

Protest: A strong complaint expressing disagreement, disapproval, or opposition.

Example: My letter of protest was just a drop in the ocean.

Protester: Someone who shows that they disagree with something by standing somewhere, shouting,
carrying signs, etc.

Example: The protesters blocking the entrance to the offices remained defiant this morning.

Public figure: A famous person who is often written about in newspapers and magazines or is often on
television or the radio.

Example: As a controversial public figure he has breasted much hostile criticism.

Publish: To make information available to people, especially in a book, magazine, or newspaper, or to


produce and sell a book, magazine, or newspaper.

Example: She agreed not to publish the names of the people involved.

Reasonable: Based on or using good judgment and therefore fair and practical.

Example: The team has a reasonable chance of winning.

Roof: The covering that forms the top of a building, vehicle, etc.

Example: Water was splashing from a hole in the roof.

Salary: A fixed amount of money agreed every year as pay for an employee, usually paid directly into
his or her bank account every month.

Example: It's not by any means a brilliant salary but it's adequate for our needs.

Slip: To slide without intending to.

Example: He'd slipped in the bath and broken his hip.

Species: A set of animals or plants in which the members have similar characteristics to each other and
can breed with each other.

Example: For homework I want you to write an essay on endangered species.

Statement: Something that someone says or writes officially, or an action done to express an opinion.

Example: They tell the reader a fact or idea about a single topic.

Strike: To refuse to continue working because of an argument with an employer about working
conditions, pay levels, or job losses.

Example: The only option available to us is to strike.

Strip: To remove, pull, or tear the covering or outer layer from something.

Example: The runway is simply a strip of grass.

Studio: A room with special equipment where television or radio programmes or music recordings are
made.

Example: Samantha spent the afternoon in the studio modeling for a painting.

Summing-up: A speech made by a judge or lawyer to the jury towards the end of a trial, telling them
again about the main matters they should consider in the case.

Example: The coroner gave a very full summing-up at the inquest and the jury reached its verdict and
made two recommendations.

Support: To agree with and give encouragement to someone or something because you want him, her,
or it to succeed.

Example: He had a family to support - and two more children on the way.

Symbol: A sign, shape, or object that is used to represent something else.

Example: The Berlin Wall was a potent symbol of the Cold War.

Sympathize: To understand and care about someone's problems.

Example: I fully sympathize with your son Luke's problems.

Target: An object shot at during shooting practice, often a circle with a pattern of rings, or any object
or place at which bullets, bombs, etc. are aimed.

Example: They received intelligence that the factory was a target for the bombing.

Thriller: A book, play, or film that has an exciting story, often about solving a crime.

Example: The film turned out to be a gripping thriller.

Toy: An object for children to play with.

Example: Carol won a large soft toy at the fair.

Traffic: The number of vehicles moving along roads, or the amount of aircraft, trains, or ships moving
along a route.

Example: There was a police officer directing the traffic.

Treatment: The way you deal with or behave towards someone or something.

Example: They were accused of inhumanity in their treatment of the hostages.

Trip: A journey in which you go somewhere, usually for a short time, and come back again.

Example: The travel company has written giving information about the trip.

Union: The act or the state of being joined together.


Example: The signing of the treaty marked a major milestone on the road to European union.

Valley: An area of low land between hills or mountains, often with a river running through it.

Example: The path descended steeply into the valley.

Valuable: Worth a lot of money.

Example: The museum has a fine collection of valuable glass.

Value: The amount of money that can be received for something.

Example: The rise in interest rates has pushed up the value of my investments.

Vulnerability: The quality of being vulnerable (= able to be easily hurt, influenced, or attacked), or
something that is vulnerable.

Example: The vote exposed vulnerabilities in the election process.

Widely: Including a lot of different places, people, subjects, etc.

Example: He is widely thought to be an indecisive leader.
