Article summary (JIB CRANE BEARING SELECTION THROUGH SIMULATION)

The jib crane is divided in two parts the fixed part and the mobile part, its main function is
to charge the batteries of the submarines using the required external current the mobile part
it moved by four motors placed on the moving part of the jib. The main motor of this 2017
jib beginnings to malfunction in its orientation movement forcing an intervention.
During the disassembly and checking the integrity of the parts that could trigger this kind of
malfunction they discover that this was a mechanical failure in the shaft (¨eje¨). It needed to
be recalculated to make it suitable for its purpose and provide greater reliability. The
engineer’s determinate that could find commercial parts that would optimize the equipment
and extend its useful life, such as single row ball bearing with angular contact or a deep
groove ball bearing. (The main purpose of bearings is to prevent direct metal to metal
contact between two elements that are in relative motion. This prevents friction, heat
generation and ultimately, the wear and tear of parts.)

During the calculation fase they first determinated the weigths of some part of the structure using
the Density Fomula for steel wich has a density of 7850 kg/m^3 and having an estimation of the
volume of the parts using this, the weigths of the parts were calculated. Using this and the free
bodydiagram, where the reaction in the suports are found it was simulated in critical condition so
it would be reliable providing the optimal type of bearing before its been instaled . during this
simulation there were cosidered 6 cases were the only ones that met the requirements were case
4 and 5.

Which led to the use of bearings of angular contact ball 7220BECBP in a back to back arrangement
for the closure of the first maintenance of the jib crane in the main dock of the submarine in a
successful ending
