Solve the following problems. Show your complete and detailed solution. Finalize
your answer in atleast two decimal places. Kindly pm to me your answer in jpg
format on or before 3:00 pm.

1. A combined rectangular footing supports an exterior column 450 mm

square and an interior column 500 mm square placed at a distance
center to center equal to 3.6 m. The exterior column having its face along
the property line carries a DL= 535 kN and LL= 446 kN, while the interior
column carries a DL= 892 kN and LL= 668 kN. The bottom of the footing is
to be 1.8 m below the grade. Allowable bearing capacity = 240 kPa, unit
weight of soil= 15.74 kN/m3, unit weight of concrete= 23.5 kN/m3, fc’= 20.7
MPa, fy= 415 MPa. Assume thickness of footing= 650 mm. Use 75 mm as
steel covering. Compute the dimension of the rectangular combined
footing.

2. A rectangular footing, 0.70 m thick, 2.5 m wide along the y-axis and 3m
long along the x-axis supports concentrically a column of 0.40 m square
subjected to the following loads. Calculate the maximum and minimum
net soil pressure.

Axial load= 1200 kN

Moment about y-axis= 360 kN.m
Height of backfill on top of the footing= 1.5 m
Unit weight of concrete= 24 kN/m3
Unit weight of soil= 17 kN/m3

3. A pile foundation shown consists of five piles. The foundation is subjected

to an ultimate vertical load on the 600 mm by 600 mm column section
equal to 890 kN and a moment of 190 kN.m with respect to y-axis.
Diameter of piles is 0.30 m, fc’= 20.7 MPa, fy= 400 MPa. Use normal weight
of concrete= 1.0. Compute the maximum bending moment due to pile
reaction under the pile cap.
4. An excavation is to be made in a homogeneous clay (unit weight=
20kN/m3, cu= 60 kN/m2 and angle of internal friction= 0) where the bed
rock is at 18 m depth. What is the maximum possible slope angle for
excavating to a depth of 12m such that the FS is above 1.5?

5. The section of a long braced cut is shown in the figure. The sides are
supported by steel sheet piles walls with struts and wales. The soil
excavated at the site is stiff clay with the following properties, c= 800lb/ft2,
 = 115 lb/ft3. Determine the maximum moment of the sheet pile section.
The struts are placed 12 ft apart center to center horizontally.
