PURPOSIVE COMMUNICATION
- Week 4: Scaling… Reflecting…

QUESTION:
On the scale of one (1) to five (5), five (5) being the highest, how would you rate the importance
of culture in the success of the communication process? Elaborate your answer.

ANSWER:
I will rate myself as I wanted to, and then I give at least (4), because culture as also called
community that provides its members with tacit knowledge of how to act in various situations
and how to perceive the actions of others in those situations. In reality, communication has
been an integral part of culture since time immemorial and, as culture progresses, the patterns
of communication of individuals have changed. Culture has a huge impact on the
communication process. Cultural differences can lead to tension and confusion between the
parties involved in the communication process. Culture has also been described in simple terms
as the lifestyle of the citizens of the society. But culture means far more; it includes different
attitudinal and behavioral aspects, such as ideals, beliefs, aspirations, norms, etc. All of these
make culture a fascinating thing to understand and have attracted the attention of researchers
to study the different facets of culture and its effect on people living within that culture. Various
subcultures may exist within a society on the basis of ethnic groups, religious groups,
occupations, etc., and there are variations between them. Many behavioral scientists' studies
show that all people who belong to a specific culture have similarities in their thought and
actions. Culture varies from one group to another and these variations may have an effect on
the degree of confidence and openness of contact that can be accomplished with people of
other cultures. There is little understanding of cultural traditions, rituals and norms. There is
also a lack of knowledge and learning about other cultures, where a number of problems arise
due to misunderstandings and communication differences. In order to ensure successful
contact, therefore, the cultural disparity should be fully understood. Communication without
taking into account the cultural difference will not yield the desired outcome in the majority of
cases. It is very important to understand their culture in order to interact effectively with people
of other cultures. Understanding their culture reduces the attitudinal and behavioral barriers to
contact. Without knowing culture, communication can lead to misapprehension. Culture is
transmitted from generation to generation by enculturation, a mechanism in which members

acquire the culture in which they are born. A different type of learning is by acculturation, the
process by which members learn from native culture the laws and norms of a culture. By
acculturation, the original or native culture is changed by direct interaction with, or exposure to,
a new and different culture. Culture is bound by the appropriate and normative conduct of
society. This is what the offspring teaches when they grow up. There are limits to acceptable
correct and incorrect wrong conduct under which society exists. Cultures can be both dynamic
and static. Being versatile means being open to change and adapting to the demands of
changing times. Being stagnant means the society does not change any of its ideals, values or
practices. The best part of culture is that it occurs between groups and lives through
connections and relationships. Culture prevails in a society through the transfer of values and
beliefs to another generation, through contact and relationships. Culture connects its members
and encourages socialization.
