Why there is a need for art criticism?

Art Criticism is an act of criticizing, analyzing and evaluating an art.


Perhaps, we interpret those arts in our own understanding by having a
certain knowledge of its style and movement. There is a need for art
criticism since it gives us critical understanding of that art. For example,
Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh when looking at it there’s a sky and
houses but when we use art criticism its artwork has deeper meaning. It’s
brush strokes where swirls and its whole effect ethereal and dreamlike.
Art criticism help us interpret various art. Interpret in a way how the
artist uses art movement and elements. Just like in the previous example
the strokes are swirling when in reality there’s no clouds such as swirls
pattern. Also, there is a need of art criticism since there is learning of
works of others that can be applied in our own works.
In general art criticism is important facet in understanding an art. There
is no qualification but of making an art but for making or expressing
something.

What are the four levels of Formal


Analysis, which you can use to explain a
work of art?

The four levels of Formal Analysis:


·Description- Pure description of the object without value judgments,
analysis, or interpretation.
·Analysis - determining what the features suggest and deciding why the
artist used such features to convey specific ideas.
·Interpretation - establishing the broader context for this type of art.
·Judgment- Judging a piece of work means giving it rank in relation to
other works and of course considering a very important aspect of the
visual arts; its originality.
This four levels of formal analysis can use to explain a work of art.
Through description we could explain what is elements used and its
subject. Analysis, it’s composition and design. Interpretation, the
meaning and content of the art. Judgement, we can criticize how skillful
the work and the technique being used.
