A MESSAGE FROM THE HEGEMON Jeff Gutow

I am pleased to announce that Nu Chapter plans to initiate nineteen pledges this

semester. This will be a very rewarding semester for pledges and actives alike. I have
planned formal initiation for the tenth week (November 4th). All nineteen pledges are
highly motivated and eager to become members of this great fraternity. They are:

MARK BRUSTMAN San Carlos DAN MAGUIRE Toronto, Ontario, Canada

NICK BUFFINGER Irvine BRAD MELLEMA El Segundo
VINCENT CHAN Irvine CHRIS MURRAY Orinda
TIM COLLINS La Jolla STEVE SCHMIDT King City
STEVE COONS Berkeley VINCENT STARR Santa Monica
CLARENCE EUBANK Inglewood KIMIO STEINBERG Hawaii
ADAM KRITZIK La Jolla GREG SUTTON Seal Beach
RICK KUNO Huntington Beach PETER THORNER Marin County
JAMES WRD Marin County MATS WALLIN Hawaii
DION MATHEWSON San Mateo

SOCIAL EVENTS

Nu's social calendar is a large and diverse one, averaging one social event each
week. The Little Sister Program has been changed somewhat, bringing new enthusiasm and
interest. Little Sisters now have their own pins as well. Our three main events this
semester are a champagne and crepes brunch with Alpha Chi Omega, a beer bash with Beta
Theta Pi, and the Nu Halloween party with Teke chapters from Reno, Sacramento, and Los
Angeles. In addition, mid-November brings our "We1ve Got It Up" party, celebrating the
construction of our 241 x 241 redwood deck in front of the house.

SPORTS

During November and December: Football on Sunday nights; Coed Soccer with Gamma Phi
Beta on Monday nights; and Basketball on Wednesday nights.
In October: We made the second round of the IFC Tournament in Volleyball (2-2) and
the third round of the IFC Tournament in Softball (1-2).

IN MEMORIAM---The Teke family was saddened by the passing of several of its members and
extends heartfelt sympathy to their families:
ALEX LAW '82 died on 8 July 1983. Frater Alex was active as an undergraduate at Nu
and, upon graduation, joined the Board of Trustees of Nu where he took a very active role
in assisting the administration of his Chapter.
MRS. IVAR (LUCY) PETTERSON passed away in November 1982. Lucy will be long remembered
at Nu for her active participation in the Nu Chapter Mothers & Wives Club in the 1950's-60.
She generously donated her time to Nu and in 1980 presented the Chapter with a copy of its
original Charter, Teke song books, Teke History Book, and other items that were Ivar's.
MRS. WELLS ( MARGARET) HARMON passed away on 10 February 1983. Wells '32 and his bro
ther Chet '34, who died several years ago, were active in Nu and the Harmon family is
lovingly remembered.
MRS. WILLIAM ( GWEN) MacPHERSON passed away in September 1983. Bill '49 is a Super
visory Sanitary Engineer with the California Department of Health in Sacramento.

ter,Kristen, who had her first birthday in February. Tony was
working as a special assistant to the Secretary of State, and is now spending the academic
year at.Harvardls JFK School of Government. He and his family are then slated to go to
the US Embassy in Paris for 3 years. Tony sends his best wishes to all.

BRAD VOLPI 174 Brad spent the past 4 years as a general practice physician in Johnston
County, North Carolina. Beginning last July he started specialty training
in neurology at Yale, and his new address is: 9 Stratton Woods,Branford, CT 06405.

JOHN H. BELL 156 John writes, "Dear F.I.T.B., Last Big Game Day was a great event, not

the crowd, instinctively locating the bar, I was surrounded by very young and completely
unrecognizable faces.....But then a familiar face made my day. It was Dan Costello (151)
who, with a little trick he does with pencil and paper, managed to get me back into the
ranks of active, or at least semi-active, alumni ..... I shall make a sefious attempt to
plan around some of the future events. Receiving the Nu News was a real pleasure, espe
cially being able to catch up on what has been happening to my former classmates since we
almost destroyed the campus in general, and the Kappa house in particular, during the
mid SOlS. So,in hopes that my name might reach some of those about whom live been reading,
herels where live been for the last 30 years: Early in 1957, I went to work as a pilot
for Pan American, but that lasted only a couple of years, since the advent of jet airCraft
put quite a few of us temporarily out of work. I then found work in Hawaii flying spora
dically for Aloha Airlines, then steadily for IHawaiian Air Tour Service, See all 8 islands.
in one day, $751. Although Uncle Sam taught me my trade originally during my stint in
the Air Force,my years with HATS,flying most of the day at 501 above the nearest volcano
or waterfall, really taught me to fly. 1964 was one of my better years. Not only was I
recalled to service with Pan Am, but I met and married Peggy in Miami, and we were assigned
to our Internal German Service based out of Berlin. On and off, we spent seven years
living in Berlin, camping all over Europe, and hatching two children. We finally settled
here in Novato in 1973 and donlt foresee any further moves. (address: 736 Sun Lane,
Novato, CA 94947) I am still with Pan Am, flying heck captain on the 747, usually to
the Far East or London. After 31 years with the Air Force Reserve, I have finally retired
as a Colonel, but still stay somewhat active counseling youngsters who wish to attend the
Air Force Academy or obtain an Air Force ROTC scholarship. I have been a rabid barbershop
singer for 21 years, thanks to Frater Robin Harris (155) inspiring so many of us in the
chapter. The Tekes used to be dynamite singers! Are they still? I am quite active in my
church and have graduated from playing the gut-bucket at the chapter house to the guitar
and banjo at church functions. I have only a year ago taken up jogging. I absolutely
hate it, but it keeps Peggy off my back about how much I eat or drink! Of course, the
majority of my free time is given over to raising our kids, but that is fast tapering off.
Our daughter Cami recently started college at age 17,and son Jeff, 15,..... might just
end up being a Teke legacy. Life has been very good to me ever since I pledged TKE! .....
Youlll certainly see the Bell family around the house this fall, as we long ago ordered
our season football tickets. We look forward to seeing you all."
