The try out edition of English reader Class ix, flight was an attempt to help students of secondary level in

continuity to the communicative functional approach followed in the text books of classes VI-VII. The
book been featured with more exposure to reading in different genres and themes.

After the field reports for the try out edition, the book has now been edeited and five units containing
there lessons eachy (total 15 lessons ) have been retained. It was found that students and teachers
found the book interesting but the approach rather new. Also, the need to familize and provide ample
practice with grammer, comprhention and interegaterd skills emphasized

The practice exercise are designed to equip learnms with self learnig strategies and more attractive
practice. The exercise have been based on selection from the reading texts and small easy and enjoyable
extracts from poems which have been exploted for the development of language sakills

The focus of the practice exercisews :

Enhanced practice in factual and inferential comprhentionh through exposure in multiplr choice type
exercise.

Extended grammatical practice for all the structural itmes occurring in context supportive listing and
speaking excersise writing tasks that include activites

Some important points to noteL

Each unit has one practice exercise. Please make the students do these execrsies after comp;lrtinbg
eachy unit of the book

The excersis can bge used paritially for class work and home work asccording to please read the listing
texts salowly and carefully.

Help the students understand anfd do the speaking tasks in the class

Help the students do the wreiting tasks and checked their exercise among them slevs

These exercise can be used for formatibve evalution of the learned in English language skills

Execrsis/ activities have been designed to help the learmse expand their word poer by making then
thinbk about synonoms, antonyms, phrases, derivaties and works realted of specific registers/ domains
of real. Most of the vocabulary excursus are text drven regisaters/domains of real life. Most of the
vocabulary excersis are text driven and encourage the learnes to revisit the text again and again scan it
closelt to get to the they may be looking for. The majot aim has been to activate the use of words learnt
provide a spiral exposuet to an assumed word power of the learnes

Grammer in the texy book is contextual . the structures and languages functional that recur in the texrts
have been focused and reinforced through practice exercise. An attempt has also been made to link
these structures and functions with their wriiteen and oral expressions in the sections on writing and
speaskiong .
The writing section encourages the leranes to use language creatively by asking them to thimnk
independly on a topic geven to them, brain storm it ionb thye group and finally organize their ideas
before getting to them, brain strom it in group and finaaly organize their ideas before getting down to
preparing individually their first and subsequent draftys. The students are also given expposue to the
mechanics of writing i.e. spellings, punctuation marks and capital letters.
