January - April 2022, Quiz-I

1) Consider a probability space (Ω, F, P). Let A1 and A2 be independent

events in F such that P(A1 ) = 0.7 and P(A2 ) = 0.4. What is the
minimum size of Ω assuming uniform probability measure on Ω.

2) How many distinct non-negative integer-valued vectors (x1 , x2 , · · · , xr )

satisfy the equation x1 + x2 + · · · + xr = n? (Assume n ≥ r.)

3) Let X be a discrete random variable on a probability space (Ω, F, P)

with support ΩX = {x1 , x2 , · · · } and p.m.f. {pX (xi )}. Define FX (x) =
P(X ≤ x) for all x ∈ R. Show that limx↓−∞ FX (x) = 0.

4) Consider the following probability space (Ω, F, P).

Ω = {(i, j) : i, j ∈ 0, 1, 2, · · ·}

λ i µj
P({(i, j)}) = C
i!j!
(a) Find C.
(b) Define X : Ω → R as X((i, j)) = i + j. Find ΩX and the p.m.f.
of X.

5) Consider infinite tosses of a coin. Let An,k denote the probability that
the nth head occurs in the kth toss. Assume that P(A1,k ) = p(1−p)k−1
for k ≥ 1. Further, assume that P(A2,k |A1,j ) = p(1 − p)k−j−1 for
k ≥ j + 1. (Assume 0 < p < 1.)

(a) Find P(A2,k ) for the appropriate range of k.

(b) Find P(A1,j |A2,k ) for appropriate range of j and k.
