Getting more students into science

Hearing authorities saying that we need more scientists has been a constant claim. It seems
that there is a lack of people in these areas, mostly in the hard sciences. The alternatives to
attract more young students into science could be by advertising and by school
programmes.

Advertising comes in many ways. They could be short and straight to the point or hidden in
tv shows, movies or tv series. The problem with advertising is that they are a distraction for
adolescents, drawing them into consumption of things like for example technology, drinks or
music. It is very common to see entire tv programs dedicated to the life of pop stars or
famous people as if they were a model to follow. However, they scarcely talk about the work
of scientists and its importance.

School is where people spend a great deal of time from an early age, and therefore it should
be the method of choice to make students get into sciences. In the majority of countries
education is failing, it is based on old methodology that makes the student get bored and
lose interest. A good methodology could be teaching sciences focusing on applications in
everyday life.

Many countries should change their approach to education and incorporate new programs in
schools to make students feel more interested in sciences, preferably in areas which lack of
professionals that will be highly demanded in the coming years.
