Abstract:

Social Media is booming rapidly among the young generation all over the world. Especially,
teenagers of school, college, and varsity goers are widely engaged in using Social Media. Thus,
these platforms would affect students personal and professional live. Therefore, this study is
designed to find out the positive and negative effects of social media on the social and academic
performances of students of North South University. As both quantitative approach was adapted
to collect the relevant data of study, a number of ten survey questionnaires were administered
within the mentioned institutions. It was concluded that in despite of public views concerning the
misuse of social media among students in the society, most of the students are likely to be
interested to use social media positively for their education. Educators and students can use social
media as informational and communicational tools to ease and improve learning process.

1. Introduction
The internet is more than just a tool for searching information. Nowadays, people use internet to
connect with other people for business or commercial purposes, to make new friends, or to bring
back old friends and long lost relatives also. The latest examples of new information and
communication technology mostly used by students is social media, also known as Social
Networking Sites. The necessity of social media has simplified the process, since they do not call
for advanced internet knowledge or experience and are made up of a wide array of different formats
and topics. This means that anyone can connect with the vast world through social media (Sudha
and Kavitha, 2016).

Social medias are forms of electronic platforms (such as websites for social networking and
microblogging) through which users create online communities to share information, ideas,
personal messages, audios, photos, videos up to with large networks of the internet. Some popular
forms of social media are- Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, twitter, youtube, Telegram, Linkedin
etc. Communication has become easier and cost effective because of these social platforms. People
can make phone calls or video calls, send text messages or photos, go live, share their thoughts
through videos, and make statements through these social platforms.

Hasnain, Nasreen and Ijaz (2015) stated that the development of technology and increase in
internet usage, social media has become a significant part of our daily lives. Social media are now
one of the most used parts of internet, as these are the mediums through which people can stay
connected with everyone around the world. Availability of technology and internet has almost
reached to its peak, which allows everyone to connect with social media very easily. It is now
being used by the working people, and also there is heavy increase in the use of social media by
the students or education society at the same time (Raut and Patil, 2016). Nowadays, teenagers
and young adults are more likely to be using these social media. Social media has both positive
and negative impacts on us. Students may exploit the advantages of social media for different
aspects, although the nature and amenity features of it seems to be distracting for students these
days. However, if social media is used productively, it can help students and youth to get
knowledge that can be used to improve their social and academic performances.

In this age of capitalism and tech-based connectivity, communication has become more
mechanized and social media based. This current study is supposed to be useful, since it is almost
new in Bangladesh, among the undergraduates in North South University. In this research, I want
to investigate on how social media is used by varsity goers of young adulthood (Age 20-26)
and what effect it has on their academic and social life. To do that, I have designed a set of
questionnaire for my primary research and gone through several books and journals published
by other researchers for my secondary research, which will help me to draw a conclusion of this
research.

1. What forms of social media do the students use mostly?
2. What do the students do on social media mostly?
3. How much time the students spend on social media?
4. What do the students think of social media?
(4.1) in which way social media is being beneficial to the students?
(4.2) what harms do the students face from social media?
5. How social media serves academic purpose according to the teachers?
6. How social media affects the family bonding of students according to the parents?
7. What are the psychological factors behind the negative aspects of social media
according to the psychologists?
8. What measures can be taken for inspiring healthy usage of social media among
students according to the officials?

1.3 Limitation of the study

The results of the current study are limited to the North South University students of Bangladesh.
Therefore, it is just limited to find the positive and negative impact of social media on the
undergraduates' academic performances.

2. Literature review:

Many journals, articles, and research is published regarding social media and its effects on different
groups of people. In this overview, some of the significant findings of those journals, articles, and
research will be discussed regarding effects of social media on adolescent and young adult students
and. Those points on which more research and articles should have been published will also be
discussed in this overview.

Kaveri Subrahmanyam and Patricia Greenfield clarifies that using online communication
impacts both positively and negatively, as there are harmful ways during which the
website might be used. They also says that these days, schools try their best to regulate how
students use digital media on school grounds. In some institution, authorities believe that
social media features a positive impact on the event of the students’ education. On the

5
opposite hand, authorities have banned the access of social network sites in some educational
institutes, since they fear the students’ interaction on them, although, they know the positive
impact social media has on the education of students.

Heffner (2016) alleged that the use of social media can be a good outlet for dealing with academic
frustrations, especially if the scholars are in touch with another student that is having the same
problem. Social media lets students to urge connected with other students, which may be very
useful because it'll allow them to debate class matters via social media. Additionally, Adam
Mahamat (2014) tried to get students’ perceptions on how their use of social networking sites
influences their academic performances. The researchers performed a preliminary survey of a
gaggle of Malaysian university students. It was found that the bulk of respondents agreed that
social networking sites have a positive impact on their academic performances.

Menseh and Nizam (2016) described that social networking have a significant effect on the
students' academic performances. They also acknowledged about the abnormal use of social
media platforms by students. The study suggested it's useful that universities and colleges in
Malaysia educate their students to use these platforms positively for educational
purposes which can ultimately end in a positive impact on their academic performance.

Jha, Jaipuria, Jha, and Sinha (2016) asserted students more probably suffering from social
media. To some extent, it absolutely affects the lives of school students counting the grades.
They added that social media is attractive because it gives college students another world to
form friends, also provides an honest thanks to release pressure. It had been also noted that
an approach is required to balance the connection between social media and academic study.
Consequently, college students should learn to balance their social media and academics.

Additionally, the findings of an investigation conducted by Eke, Omekwu and Odoh (2014) among
undergraduates in Nigeria showed that there are some benefits come from using social
media, which inspires virtual meeting with co-research scholar; self-esteem and wellbeing;
Research and learning; strengthening interpersonal relationship; read and write web skills
etc. it had been also noted that students use social media to speak with friends, viewing
movies, for discussing national issues like politics, economy and non-secular matters, and for
tutorial purposes. Moreover, addiction towards using social media among students was very
high.

Mingle and Adams (2015) stated that there are some students, who experienced improvement
in their reading skills as a result of participation and involving social media. Also, respondents
shared ideas, discussed and shared examination questions among themselves on social media.
All an equivalent. Moreover, Mingle and Adams (2015) asserted that majority of respondent’s
experienced negative effects i.e. poor grammar and spelling, late submission of assignment,
less study time and poor academic performance due to an excessive amount of use of social
media networks.

6
In addition, the outcomes of a survey performed by Roblyer, McDaniel, Herman and Witty (2010)
showed that faculty and students differ in terms of their current and anticipated uses of social
media like Facebook. It had been noted that there's a big difference between the perceived
roles of this tool as social, instead of educational. Students appear as if far
more hospitable the thought of using Facebook instructionally than do faculty.

Sudha and Kavitha, (2016) also stated that most of faculties believed that social media have a
negative effect on the students' academic performances compared with positive effects and
the credit goes to the lack of awareness among the scholars and specialists about the
acceptable usage of social media topics of educational interest. Within the meantime, the
positive effects of social media on their academic performances seemed to be significantly
low.

Moreover, Heffner and Tara (2016) conducted a study among undergraduates at Rowan
University of the USA, which described that social media don't have a positive effect on the
students' academic achievements. Because the scholar GPA decreased the maximum
amount as they were engaged in social media. The study suggested that the undergraduate
students should be managing and monitor their time spent using social media like Facebook.
In another study, Mushtaq (2015) discovered social media as an element within the lacking
of habits of reading newspaper among students and it's going to cause them to lose much
advantageous information contains the newspaper.

Furthermore, Wang, Chen and Liang (2011) alleged that social networking is
completely affecting students’ effectiveness also as their grades. Therefore, educators got
to be worried about these problems and plan to find better ways to unravel these problems.
Though, framed within a tutorial context, the concepts outlined here are often wont
to investigate the utilization of communication technology not only at college, but
also reception, workplace, and lots of other settings, and for a diversity of various viewers
like teenagers, young adults, the elderly, or families.

However, more research should be there that draw some strategies to enhance the utility of Social
media for students. In this research, some strategies will be set which will offer some potentiality
to solve the issues regarding usage of social media for the target students of this research with the
help of more findings of other learning tools regarding this matter

3. Background:

Social Media are involved very closely in our day to day life. The social media platforms holds a
great deal of importance in students ‘life. However, these platforms are being utilized and wasted
at the same time by the student themselves. It doesn’t need any mentioning that students are the
backbone of any society. A student’s future depends a lot on how they perform their duties in the
age of 20-26, which is the target population of this research. Nonetheless, the fact of a student’s
excessive usage of using social media has caught our attention. Eke, Omekwu and Odoh (2014)
described some dangers related to social networking sites like internet addiction, laziness,
standard crime like, fraud, murder, kidnapping; or even immoral acts like, pornography,
prostitution, cyber-bullying where identified. Therefore, it is obvious that the usage of social
media can either be productive or can cause severe harm in a student’s life. So effects of social
media on students should be our one of the primary concerns and thus it needs more research works
so that students can utilize the advantages of using social media more through this research. On
that note, we will be conducting some surveys on different groups of people involved in this agenda
like students, teachers, parents, and psychiatrists in this research with the questions discussed in
the questionnaire and going through several books and journals published by other researchers
on this topic. Thus, this research work will serve a great deal to the society by giving some
productive lessons to its backbones, who are students.

4. Hypothesis:

Arguments on the effects of social media on students have been a trendy thing in research areas.
The findings of those research may have already given us some pre-assumptions and predictability
of the answers of the questions in the questionnaire in this research. No matter how productive
outcomes social Medias offer to the students, we cannot deny those facts which clarifies that a
significant number students have not been using social media with such extent of expectancy,
which may cause some severe harms in the lives of the students. In this research, I expect to find
some possible solutions for the negative effects of social media and encourage fair and productive
use of social media among students. Furthermore, most of the students should be interested to use
social media positively for their education in this study.

8
5. Methodology:
To complete the research, I required different types of data. I also needed to analyze all those data
carefully in order to find out a result. I collected data from different sources. These are;

(5.1) Primary research: Primary research means collecting data that are not readily available.
I used survey method as mean of my primary research.

• Questionnaire: For my primary research, I have prepared a questionnaire with ten

questions. I designed these questions in such a way so that I can know about the actors
and factors that influences the usage of social media, the positive and negative aspects
of social media, and the strategies to make the usage of social media productive for
students. I distributed these questionnaire to 40 people, where first four questions are
asked to 34 students of North South University, question-5 was asked to two teachers,
question-6 was asked to two parents, and last two questions were asked to two
specialists. The data of the close ended questions, Q1-Q5, were collected through
Google forms and the rest of data from the close ended questions, Q6-Q8, were collected
through phone calls and texts.

(5.2) Secondary Research: For my secondary research, I went through different books and
journals published regarding this matter. I have read some previous researches conducted by
other researchers on or close to this topic. I also have browsed the internet and standard search
engines, like Google, to get reliable information on my focused area.

Furthermore, some data presentation analysis will be conducted basing on the respondents’
answers to the questionnaire of this study.

This question was asked to the students for knowing the most famous platforms of social media
among students and the pie chart shows the percentage of usage of different trendy social media
among the respondents and those social platforms are Facebook, Youtube, Instagram, Tiktok,
Twitter, Viber, and Imo.

Facebook, Instagram, Twitter are social networking site, where people can share their photos,
videos, statements or they can make pages, groups, phone calls, video calls, live videos, and chat
with others. However, platforms like Whatsapp Viber, Imo, and discord are discussion social sites,
where people can only chat or make phone calls and video calls. Furthermore, social media like
Youtube, tiktok are used as a video hosting platforms. People can upload any form of video on
youtube following the guideline of fair use, whereas people can make short-form video and they
lip sync with a song or a movie dialogue in Tiktok.

The pie chart shows see that Facebook and Instagram are used mostly by the respondents
because of the variety of features’ being in one app. These social sites apps are easy to use and are
very cost effective. Moreover, Youtube is also used mostly by people because it contains every
kind of videos. People can learn to do anything from youtube videos, and they have to just type
“how to do” for it. There are also many channels in youtube for entertaining, news, blogging,
travelling, and what not. However, people uses tiktok for expressing their talents as an actor,
although most of the time people fails in doing so and ends up making cringe videos. Lastly, People
use Whatsapp and Viber for having secured discussions, as the messages passed in these platforms
contains end to end data encryption.

This question was asked to the students for knowing common activities of students while being
active on social media and the pie chart shows the percentage of usage of those most common
activities and those activities are newsfeed scrolling, chatting, audio/video calling, commenting on
posts, uploading stories, status, photo, and video.

The chart indicates chatting as a most common activity among students. Students have social,
informal, formal, and academic conversation on social media with their friends, family, classmates,
teachers, and also they chat with unknown people as well for making new friends. Chatting on
social media is a significant part of students’ day to day lives. It has a significant effect on the
students. Social media chatting can make the students more connected, social, professional, and
knowledgeable. On the other hand, the chatting feature of social media can be waste of time, used
unfairly and used for disturbing people through spamming. But most of the people don’t do such
things in university level, although a significant number of people engage in such activities.

The second common activity is newsfeed scrolling on social media, where people can get to see
photos, videos, statements of their friends or the page they have subscribed. This feature can be as
productive as it can be just a waste of time. Students can learn many important things from the
good contents of newsfeed but sometimes they can get carried away and spend a lot of time for it,
not to mention the possibility of bumping into a cheap content on newsfeed.

The third common activity is to share their photos or videos on stories or timeline, which helps
them to share their lifestyle with outer world. But it can make them narcissistic by making them
obsessed on sharing each and every personal things on social platforms.

11
Commenting on posts on social media are not that much of a common activity but it can flourish
a student’s ability to make a constructive response or criticism. On the other hand, it gives the
students a chance to say whatever they want on a public post without any accountability, which
can lead in making cheap comments from students’ end.

Audio and video calling features lets students to have voice call or video conference very cost
effectively, which is a very attractive feature for students. The students can have meeting on group
call for academic purpose or they can just have casual conversation with their friends and family.
However, this feature can also result in waste of time if not used wisely, as it is very cheap and
cost effective to make a voice/video call on social media.

This question was asked to the students for knowing the amount of their time spending on social
media and the result came quite shocking. This pie chart shows how much significant social media
is in a life of students. We can see that 26% of the respondents spends 1-3 hours, 42% of the
respondents spends 4-6 hours, 21% of the respondents spends 7-9 hours, and 11% of the
respondents spends 7-10 hours!

A platform on which a student can spend 3-10 plus hours, almost half of a day, is obviously a
concern worth analyzing on. 1-6 hours of usage is quite normal for varsity going students during
this pandemic period, as they cannot go out of home and meet with their friends in varsity. So they
have to communicate through social media, and also they have to have an outlet for entertainment

12
in while being stuck at home. But spending more than 7-10 hours is a matter of concern, as it can
harm student in many ways like academically, mentally, and physically. But most of the
respondents have reported that the reason behind using social media for this many time, which is
online tuition and online group discussion for extra assignment pressure with classmates during
pandemic. But there are some students who just sit ideally and uses social media aimlessly, which
is a serious matter of concern

This question was asked to students for knowing the students’ view on social media and the pie
chart shows that social media seems beneficial for 46% of the students, harmful for 18% of the
student, both harmful and beneficial for 36% students.

Social media is full of features and it gives a lot of independence without accountability.
Therefore, it is obvious that social media can turn out to be beneficial for some students, and also
can be harmful for some.

The question is sub divided into two parts where student will justify their answer of this question
in the next two questions.

This question is asked to justify those who said social media is beneficial and choose the facts
behind their answers. The pie chart shows the reasons of social media’s being beneficial for
students and the reasons are easy communication, potentiality for serving academic purpose,
entertainment, features for expressing talents.

Social media makes it easier for students to build a better communication among their classmates
regarding their personal or academic concerns. They can just open a group chat of his or her class
on social media, where they can ask any kind of help from all of the classmates with one message
only. They can make audio/video conferencing and present their files on the conference, which is
a very easy process. Students may many social and personal issues that they have to share with
someone and social media makes it even easier just in the time of need. Thus students find social
media beneficial for serving personal and academic purposes.

There are a lot of students from the respondents who shares their creativity in social platforms.
Some of them shares their artworks or writings, some shares their video of singing or instrumental
playing, and some shares their academic creativity through status, photo, video, and file sharing.

Students can make their job profile and highlight their CVs on the social platform like Linkedin,
from which their probability of getting job is increased. Sometime a good digital footprint on social
platforms can create a good impression for getting a job.

Social media contains many funny and creative contents that are a great outlet for entertainment
for students, especially in this time of corona pandemic. Thus social media can turn out to be
beneficial for most of the students.

This question is asked to justify those who said social media is harmful and choose the facts
behind their answer. The pie chart shows the reasons of social media’s being beneficial for students
and the reasons are time killing, causing lack of concentration while studying, discouraging real
life social interactions.

It is mentioned before that social media can be time killing if used aimlessly. Some students seem
to be scrolling homepage, stalking others profile, chatting unnecessarily and randomly. Some
becomes narcissistic by aimlessly sharing their photos on social media without any context, and
waits to get reaction on their posts, which causes waste of time.

Cheap or offensive contents harms many of the students’ mental health. Sometimes we can see
many contents that sometimes offends one’s social or religious norms, and also the rumors, which
can cause extremism and revengeful manners in young adult students. Most of the cyber bullying
happens in the social media and students may be the victim or can be the one to cause it.
Furthermore, Sexual cheap contents on social media can harm students’ morality as well.

Social media can decrease social distance virtually but it sometimes decreases real life social
interactions like talking with parents or playing games in the fields with the friends. Some students
seems to be uninterested in people who are in front of him and becomes unsocial in real life.

The amenity features of social media tend to be so appealing that it can deviate students from
their studies. Students keep logging into their social media account while studying to see if anyone
has messaged him or to scroll newsfeed while studying

5. How social media serves academic purpose?

56%

This question was asked to teachers to know if social media has any potentiality to build a better
learning for students. The pie chart shows that online lectures and features for sharing course
contents and notes has been helping a lot to serve the academic purpose for students.

We have seen that teachers are taking online classes on social media like facebook. The teachers
record classes on their phone and uploads on the page or group of their educational institution,
which has been saving a lot of trouble that they faced in offline classes. It is easier this way.
Students can learn while staying at home. Teachers think social media can has the potentiality to
bring a revolution in educational field.

6. How social media affects the family bonding among students?

Respondent 1: “My son shows his love for his parents on social media while in fathers or
mother’s day only. He is always on that Facebook and smiling to god knows what. Yet he
doesn’t have time for us parents ”

Respondent 2: “Social media helps her to communicate with her friends during the
pandemic, and also it helps in her studies to some extent perhaps. However, her using social
media never affected our family bonding”

This question was asked to two parents through phone call and two different answers came from
them. Social media seemed to be a cause for breakage in family bonding in one case, while it had

16
no influence on family bonding in the other case. This means social media can’t be the only reason
for breakage in family bonding in every aspects. It actually depends on the user. Social media
cannot be blamed for it solely.

7. What are the psychological factors behind the negative aspects of social media?

Dr. Sayedul Ashraf: “Communication gap with parents, loneliness, frustration of real life,
low self-esteem, and aggressive capitalism may push the young minds into the virtual
entertainments of social media, which is ultimately causing reluctance day to day task of real
life, making them narcissistic and attention seeker.”

This question was asked through Facebook live of a renowned psychiatrist named Dr. Sayedul
Ashraf. Here, we can deduce that social there are some external factors which are the reasons
behind the negative aspects of social media. Parents don’t understand the psychology of the young
minds. Not everyone can have friends in real life for lacking social skills or being introvert and
they feel lonely. Students may get frustrated from their academic pressure. Not to mention the fact
that in this era of capitalism, people lack in empathy and the whole physical ambience have become
mechanized. Students might just start using social media excessively or unfairly to deal with the
grudge of those issues. A truck driver behind the steer have the power to kill people by mad driving
but that does not mean he has to, if he learns to drive properly. Therefore, negative aspects of
social media is caused by the mentioned factors, not by the features of the social media solely.

8. What measures can be taken for inspiring healthy usage of social media among
students?

Respondent: “Social accountability, self-esteem, and awareness about the cyber laws can
promote fair usage of social media among all the people.”

This question was asked through the Facebook page of cyber police center, DMP. Here, we can
see that if people feels accountable for their activities on social media and have enough social
esteem, they would use social media fairly, not mention the cyber laws awareness that can actually
make people use social media fairly so that students get a healthy environment in social media.
Students should feel responsible for themselves and their family reputation while usingsocial
media.

17
7. Summary and findings:

This study was designed to know both the positive and negative effects of social media. The
hypothesis was students would be more into using social media productively and some
solution would come out to motivate fair usage of social media. The data I collected through
primary and secondary sources match my hypothesis to significant extent. The results of my
descriptive analysis illustrated that the most of the students believed that social media are
very useful tools for their studies and social life as well. The respondents described social
media as a helping measure for their studies and social life. So, it's expected that social media
positively affect students’ academic performances. The results interestingly describe that
undergraduates in North South University mostly inclined to use social media during a good
manner. Additionally, social media may enable students to speak effectively with their
peers to unravel their classes’ problems, as they described social media as effective tools used
for communication. Social media enable them to be in-tuned with classmates and friends so
as to enhance their communication skills (Benraghda and Radzuan, 2018) and receive
university announcements which are far more important for them. Raut and Patil (2016) also
stated the utilization of social media has been made a positive impact on the society.
Especially in the pandemic social media has proved that how potential it is for educational
field through the online live classes on the social media groups and pages of educational
institutions.

This study shows the negative aspects of social media but the outcome also indicates that the
negative impact of social media on the performances of students aren't the maximum
amount as compared with their positive effects, as most of the respondents described social
media advantageous and beneficial tools in their learning process. Though, students
believed the acute use of social media affect their study process, and also because it is
waste of your time. The study also showed that all the negative aspects of social media are
caused by some external social factors, which can be solved through taking the necessary
measure suggested by the specialists.

However, the results of this study about the positive use of social media by
students' is significant and unique. Because, generally, public has negative image of social
media on their mind. But findings of the present study showed that social
media aren't affecting the students' academic performances negatively, instead they
carry information, knowledge, news and views of world and residential to their palm of hand.
