Introduction

Good afternoon, my name is Martyn Pereira and I will be presenting on the topic of
psychological trauma of sexual assault on male teenagers in the Caribbean, and if there’s
anything that can be said, it’s that sexual assault shouldn’t be joked about, it’s a very touchy
subject. Now, psychological trauma is described as a disturbing experience, and sexual assault is
forced sexual contact without one’s consent while male teenagers in the Caribbean refer to
masculine figures ages 13 to 19 of this region. The concept of sexual assault dates back to the
ancient writings of Greece, and the bible, where majority of the victims were identified as males,
which sparked controversy with claims that society acted as a patriarchy, as female cases were
often neglected, now sexual assault on females are more prevalent than ever and has taken the
spotlight, while males cases are taken for granted, especially in the Caribbean, which has seen a
rise in cases, resulting in many victims incurring psychological trauma, which is difficult to treat
within the region. The reason for choosing this topic was to provide an insight on this trauma and
the attention this topic deserves. In this exposition, I’ll be highlighting the gender biased
perceptions, the increasing frequency of cases and challenges of traumatic outcomes in relation
to this topic.
Body paragraph 1
The issue Gender biased perceptions originate from female movements that blame males for
sexual assault on females, but when males are assaulted, there are rarely any objections against
it. This can be supported by a statement in Raychelle Lohmann’s newspaper report, ‘Child
Sexual Abuse Among Boys’, which states, ‘male rape is often not treated as an equal offense
with female rape’. This is backed by Emma Brown’s magazine article, ‘Sexual Assault Against
Boys Is a Crisis’, that states, ‘unwanted sexual contact can traumatize boys just as it does girls’.
This indicates that males are treated indifferently as opposed to our female counterparts. The
issues of increasing frequency of cases and psychological trauma incurred reflect upon the rising
cases of sexual assault on teenage males and due to its disregard, victims develop long term post
traumatic effects. Brown’s piece stated, ‘1 in 6 boys is sexually abused during childhood’. In
addition to this is Brown’s piece, which declared, ‘A common theme emerging in treating male
rape victims is a lost sense of manliness. Male victims voice their concern in reconciling their
masculine identity with their experience of being raped.’, highlighting the trauma and difficulty
to accept such an event. This topic’s implications mirror mine in research, as most sources did
not fit the criteria of males, especially, when it came to the teenage experience, while some
lacked the necessary information on the psychological effects of this act.

Body paragraph 2
Based on analysis of the Riccardi’s composition, the information provided was effective, as it
targeted the lack of concern given to sexual assault on men in society, while also emphasizing
the loss of masculine identity as the limitation in coping with such deeds. In terms of validity and
reliability of this source, it should be known Patrizia Riccardi, has a medical degree and is a
psychiatrist with over 39 years of experience in the field. She graduated at the University Of
Naples Italy medical school in 1983, and has been involved in treatment programs of multiple
mental illnesses, including PTSD, post-traumatic stress disorder, a condition that can result from
prolonged sexual assault, implying that she possesses substantial knowledge on the topic, with
more depth provided in the psychological view. Personally, I can also connect with this belief
because as a science student who has been exposed to content on such issues and their causes, I
can guarantee that the information is accurate as it supplements the reasons behind such issues,
inclusive of sexual assault. The use of context can also be commended as it establishes sexual
assault as a global crisis that is not just limited to women, and requires more attention. The way
this message is conveyed played a vital role in its credibility, as it serves as an asset distributed
by U.S. National Institutes of Health's National Library, earning its place through the review of
other trained medical professionals to verify the accuracy of information.
Body paragraph 3
Couture’s composition complements that of Riccardi’s, as its material proves effective in
supplying an insight on growth as a boy compared to a girl, whilst hinting towards the reluctant
mind of a young teenage male. Similar to the latter in validity and reliability, Laurie Couture is
the author of the book, ‘Instead of Medicating and Punishing’, which was chosen as a finalist in
the ForeWord Magazine Book-of- the-Year Awards in 2009 and she’s also the recipient of the
2010 Manchester Union Leader’s Forty Under 40 honors. Her specialty is aiding parents in
healing their children mentally, focusing on their struggles and devising techniques to overcome
them, including ordeals linked to sexual assault. This too is one with data I can trust, as I can
sympathize with the good cause of helping those in need, and can regard this approach as
befitting of the situation. The context used is creditable initiating a better understanding as to
how severe this predicament can be on its patients. The channel of transmission for this message
is also well thought out as it is located on a website visited by parents to get a better
understanding of their teenagers, which is an advantage as it allows for more adult figures to
understand the severity of such dilemmas and take action against it.

Conclusion
In conclusion to this exposition, it can be said that sexual assault on teenage male individuals
is heavily ignored due to the conflict between males and females, and is emerging at a rate
causing dozens of innocent teenage boys to face the consequences. This research has helped me
gain more knowledge on sexual assault, especially those against teenage male individuals, and
change me as a person, now passionate to put such activities to a stop globally, to fix gender
inequality, and help those who are in desperate need, and based off of the information from my
sources, I can verify that they are valid, credible and reliable, as they originate from skilled
producers and accentuate the flaws seen in today’s modern society as it relates to sexual assault
on teenage male individuals.
