Sequence and Series
1. The nth term of an arithmetic sequence is given. (i) Find the first five terms of the sequence.
(ii) What is the common difference 𝑑?
A. un = -6 – 4(n – 1)
i. First five terms of the sequence:
u1 = -6 - 4(1-1)
u1 = -6 - 4(0)
u1 = -6 – 0
u1 = -6
u2 = -6 - 4(2-1)
u2 = -6 - 4(1)
u2 = -6 – 4
u2 = -10
u3 = -6 - 4(3-1)
u3 = -6 - 4(2)
u3 = -6 – 8
u3 = -14
u4 = -6 - 4(4-1)
u4 = -6 - 4(3)
u4 = -6 – 12
u4 = -18
u5 = -6 - 4(5-1)
u5 = -6 - 4(4)
u5 = -6 – 16
u5 = -22
First five terms of the sequence: -6, -10, -14, -18, -22, …
ii. The common difference (d = -4)
B. un = -10 + 4(n – 1)
i. First five terms of the sequence:
u1 = -10 + 4(1-1)
u1 = -10 + 4(0)
u1 = -10 + 0
u1 = -10
u2 = -10 + 4(2-1)
u2 = -10 + 4(1)
u2 = -10 + 4
u2 = -6
u3 = -10 + 4(3-1)
u3 = -10 + 4(2)
u3 = -10 + 8
u3 = -2
