Necessary Prior we have used the term “schema” multiple times before - they know how to use

Materials small groups - flashcards/story paper/highlighters
The opening will be from the learning target.
*reminders before: use schema, both in nonfiction and fiction
Introduction/Hook
pose the question and discuss with groups “What do you already know about
magnets” before reading
GL: Tues. - “What Makes A Magnet” (the students will watch the video &
discuss in groups)
Instructional Thurs. - watch video on functional texts, discuss, look through pages in Magnets
book (use pictures, headings, etc. to draw conclusions/why do we need steps?

will be tested on nonfiction texts and how to draw conclusions. Practice will be
